James👍👍 Interesting subject that shows just how diverse we are with personal taste and selection. My dad gave me my first knife which was his personal user, now in my sons possession, *actually he stole it from me and won't give it back claiming it's an heirloom. It's a German handmade PUMA knife 1950's vintage with a stacked black leather and ringed steel handle(Scout?)w/black leather sheath, absolutely gorgeous and razor sharp, never seen another like it. Now if I can just steal it back😉

I love old hickory and green river too. Can’t beat them for the price. I just buy the blanks and make a finger choil and my own scales. I got a condor kephart blank a cpl months ago too and that’s actually been real stellar. I actually come to like 1075 a lot. Possibly more than 1095. Stays sharp the same to me. Resist rust possibly a tiny bit better. Way tougher than 1095 though. My dog is old and having trouble with rawhides. I batoned it with the condor to get the rawhide apart for my dog to start chewing. Did absolutely nothing to the blade. Shaving sharp afterwards too. Can’t really ask for more than that. Great video!

I have about a dozen Mora's in various designs (511, companion, eldris & bushcraft) from days when I taught more often. I just found you by watching your green river video today, I need to get another one of them. My current brand is terava from Finland. I've never owned a custom knife so the most I've spent was for my skarma ($75)

Cool video! The Mora Kansbol is always the sub $50 fixed blade ill recommend. My first fixed blade was a smaller cheaply made Bowie knife. The guard was loose from day one, and I used a pull through sharpener on it (I was 13 years old). I have several Mora 511's I keep stashed everywhere: junkdrawer, cars, emergency kits, etc.. but my favorite fixed blades are the Benchmade Leuku or the Fallkniven r2 scout. Only downside is the factory sheaths for both are AWFUL. I also had a LTWK GNS that I miss dearly.

My first knife that I learned the basics with is a Condor Bushlore and I still own it today. Then I started using LT Wright knives and knives from other custom makers. After that I got more into Mora, Esee, Tops knives and just stuck mostly to the Mora Garberg and Esee RB3. I just ordered a Knafs Lulu in Magnacut and I think that is going to be the one!!!

"If something's not magnacut, it's not worthy of taking out for a two hike and cooking ramen noodles". You just perfectly summed up my problem with 90% of the "Bushcraft" content on youtube. I've been watching your content for a while, but just subscribed because of this comment. I also agree that the Kansbol is probably the best all around outdoor knife for outdoor tasks and I'm sick and tired of hearing that you need some $500 heavy duty, custom, super-steel knife to take outdoors. Refreshing to hear someone with real experience go against this silly modern trend.

Kabar... and really it was an Ontario with the black handle... was my first fixy-belt knife for the woods. Got it right out of the navy and used it for 12-13 years? Next up was a Gerber Prodigy. Used that for 2-3 years. Then went Mora. Have a collection now. Got into Varusteleka Jakkarrii Puukko... however that's spelled... and that's the main wood knife now.

Always interesting to see a persons 'knife evolution'. If possible I bring two knives. One stainless slicer for food prep and one stronger for batoning. This can be both budget knives like the Mora 546 for food prep and the Hultafors GK (or Mora Robust) for woodwork like batoning. But I have to correct you. Mora ,since some 40 years, did have (or still has) a range of hunter knives that are truly full tang with wooden handle scales and leather sheaths called the 'Laplander' series. In my view the Garberg is a protruding stick tang since the handle covers the tang on all sides but definitions about what a full tang is differ.

Started with a Ka-bar and a Swiss Army Knife. Kept the Ka-bar when I was in the Marines, went through a few Leathermans while in the Marines, had a few Moras and then got a Terava Jaakariipuukko. I've still got a few Moras, still got a Ka-bar from my time on active duty that I've been taking out on my last few trips, but my Jaakariipuukko is the one that I know I can truly count on.

The Jaakaripuukko 140 i have is so good and does everything so well that it's the only knife one would need, but as a knife🥜 one is never enough, id say the rokka korpisoturi is like a pro version of the modernized puukko that thing is wild experience 63HRC and bomb proof. Definitely worth the try if you prefer puukko/scandi knives

Nice knives! My experience with expensive knives is that they will eventually get lost. Oh, wait, that's been my experience with cheap knives, too! It just doesn't hurt as much when the cheap knife gets lost. That's why I always carry more than one knife on me. It's funny to think of how much money a lot of people will spend on a crappy knife that looks cool and tough...etc before they really know anything, then they start to learn and get a Mora an old hickory or a green river that's less expensive than the disappointing junk they started with. I remember when I was a teenager I just bought junk assuming I couldn't afford a knife of quality , I spent as much as $25 on Chinese crap at the local flea market or surplus store hoping for a little better and they were all just as bad as the $5-$10 crap I had been disappointed by before. Eventually I learned about Mora knives, but naturally assumed a knife so popular with that much praise must be expensive. When I learned that the go-to models were only $6 & $10 I just just had to have one, but sadly I was limited to local retail locations that didn't carry them and I was SOL. Thankfully about a year later I was given a 60's Western F48a that was found going through some boxes of junk from an inherited storage unit and I was all set. I can't tell you how much I carried and used that knife over the years. I have a mora now that I'll use during the fitting and hanging of hickory tool handles, but otherwise I just don't really like the Scandi grind.

Thanks for the interesting video. You know, I traveled in Mexico for a year and a half and noticed that “Tramontina” kitchen knives with blades shaped similar to “Sneakeater” are the most popular in the kitchen there. I was surprised by this, because cutting on a board with such knives is less convenient than with ordinary chef's knives with a triangle shape, because you are not using the entire length of the blade. What do you think, dear James, where did such a tradition come from on Mexican soil? In other countries, such knives are less popular in kitchens.
@acr823
@acr823 Жыл бұрын
I am from Brasil, and and all brazilian homes have almost 1 Tramontina knife, machetes from Tramontina are the most used here. They are low quality, low tech knives, but they are cheap and do the job. Now there are a better kitchen/chef's line called Tramontina Century that are high quality kives. Personaly i don't like Tramontina because the handles are very poor made and unconfortable. Exception for the Century line.

😂 not being a steel snob or a steel nerd.... however knowing how the steel, blade profile, and edge geometry affect the knife's ability to do the job you want it to do are important. Now, i dont even differentiate down to specific types, but the two big ones to remember are the primary differences between carbon steel and stainless. Carbon steel over all is softer than stainless which means its going to have more give. Its going to be easier to sharpen and hone, but that also means that edge is going to dull faster. Carbon steel overall is going to need more upkeep. Stainless on the other hand isnt going to corrode like carbon steel. Stainless also tends to have a higher hardness which is good for holding an edge. The trade off is that it is harder to sharpen and also more brittle (hard concept for steel) than carbon steel. The blade profiles and grind are important to task. The kbar for instance was intended as a fighting knife and general field knife, which means its not going to be great for many field tasks. The sweep of the kbar would help with game, but the size doesnt give you much control for detail cuts. Where as the condor kephart wouldve given you more control over the cuts, but its not the best sweep on the blade for dealing with meat. That last knife you had designed has a good belly for meat as well as that flat angle on top giving a solid angle for opening up and skinning game. A hollow grind excells at slicing, scandi is easy to sharpen, saber and concave are good for splitting etc..
@JunkyardFox
@JunkyardFox Жыл бұрын
of course those things come into play. im juut saying too many folks fixate on the little details like steel types but overlook the bigger picture. I know some guys that own 40 knives, the latest and greatest, yet haven't advanced in knife skills or experience, most of those knives have never even gutted a fish.

I've become turned off by all the super steels these days . I honestly think Tops 1095hc and basic tried and true 12C27n, 14C28N and 420 USA made steels are good enough. Especially considering the insane inflation cost it really makes you look at things with new eyes and a thinner wallet. Ive had probably 100 of popular brand "the next big thing" blades in the past. Now after all these years I prefer the lowercost blades that just perform. Im no steel hater, I like a good super steel but I dont love them either. For what we use knives for you never really get what ya paid for out of them. It really don't matter in real life, especially in a SHTF situation. Do we really want to be looking for a diamond stone when your hungry and your knife is dull? 🤔 Its apocalyptic romance that sales alot of these gimmicky steels . Yet in real life thats the last steel I'd want if hiding and surviving.
