A hilarious part of my drum story. I had in the late 90's a Ludwig Superclassic maple "obviously" kit, with all Artstar II hardware. Lugs, spurs and mounts, tom mounts, arms, legs and mounts, all Tama, the only thing that wasn't was the snare drum, which actually matched pretty damn close, with the long lugs, with the stripes on them. Why? No idea lol. I do know the guy who owned them originally had them built that way somehow. I traded him my Ray era Ayotte kit for them. They were modern head sizes with power tom depths, it was an 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 kit with 1" shorter depths, except the square floor tom "yup 14 was a rack" very odd set, but man, that 22x20 kick with a SKII Aquarian on it sounded so amazing! Matter of a fact, Roy Burns actually headed and tuned my kit, at a workshop he held at our drum shop. My coworkers were pissed at me, because they wanted to use my Ayotte kit, but I traded just before the event lol.

Awesome tour of all the awesome kits!! I Mic'ed up my kit at home using a Behringer UMC1820 with a Behringer ADA8200 to get a total of 16 inputs. Bought some cheap second hand microphones for like 80 bucks or something like that and then a Shure Beta 52A for the kick. Thinking about upgrading the Overheads though to better ones when I can afford it. But I would imagine it being a pain in the rear section to haul everything between the kits. Gotta cover the albums in full before changing setup

In regards to your monitoring problem with the ead-10 - Try using a small 4-5 channel mixer. Pipe your music in on one channel (I use the Moises app, which can add in a click, and boost/minimize certain instruments in the mix, as well as add a count in.) and your drums from the ead-10 in another channel. You can then mix your sound levels to your liking. I use a combo of mics and the ead-10 for purely boosting some of the punch on the kick, and snare. I think this will eliminate some of your headaches with the ead-10. (PS I rip the songs from Spotify, by screen-recording them with my phone, then uploading that "video file" into the Moises app - from there the app does the rest for you. - it works, trust me!)

I also have the 6.5x14 Mastercraft with the long lugs. So far it looks like I’ll be running mostly 6894 boom stands as i have only been able to find two 6904 telescoping booms. I may opt to run the pro beat pedals in place of the king beats, actually like the probeats action. I also have a Granstar 10/12/13/16/22 with the MTH50 and remember seeing in some of the Tama ads endorsers (maybe Rodney Holmes or Joel rosenblatt) running the platform backwards to access the wingscrews. Just a thought but maybe replicate the white 5pc practice kit Lars had backstage from the wherever i may roam tour. It had the dont tread on me snake on it. Would be a perfect mate to the black album kit.

@Iamadrummer23 күн бұрын
I think it is neat that you replicated Lars 80s drum kits. None of those kits are all that easy to play as to why in the 90s, Lars went to a smaller drum set as it was easier to play and he never fully used all the toms on his 80s kits anyway . As for Lars having the same size floor toms he only played one and the second one was more of a table for his towels and stuff. Back in the day large drum sets were the cymbal of a Metal drummer. Since then most Metal drummers went to a smaller drum set. These days lots of Metal band drummers just use a 4 piece drum set with an array of cymbals. The reason Lars and others keep their cymbals loose is they ring out more. Tight wing nuts keep the felts tight on the cymbals and will dampen and slightly choke them, and will not allow the cymbal to ring out as much. Personally I like Lars smaller drum kits with the purple sparkle being my favorite. Going to microphones will help the sound but not only is it expensive you are going to have to get the same type and style microphones that Lars used or the sound from them will be different. You will also need a sound board to run the microphones through so they can be EQed correctly. You kept saying you are a stickler for details and do have some cool details but you also explained why you did things differently that is not to detail. All in all a cool video.

With a room that small - a couple of overheads on each kit would pick up everything. You don't HAVE to mic up every drum. You could even put the mic holders on the ceiling 'floorboards' .
@Wee-WorldMiniaturesandProps23 күн бұрын
Yes the overheads would pick up a lot. But you will not have the same control or ability to bring out the best in each drum, for your mix.
@DavidOakesMusic22 күн бұрын

@DavidOakesMusic crazy! I was not aware of that. In my own experiences, I prefer mics on everything. I can get rid of what's necessary, but I can't really add or get more of what I don't have in the first place. I'm sure there are scenarios where the certain kit, and room and drummer give an incredible sound with minimal mics.

To comment at the trigger/recording part of your video..... Only triggers that work great are the newer Rolland ones. And then you really need a newer brain, and one where you can download the sounds into the unit. Then you'll get whatever it is you want. If you have no experience with recording,, you might not want to get into it unless you have a lot of money and a lot of time to learn. I have 25 years of experience recording myself, and the time and money I put into it over the years is a lot. And you never stop learning. It usually just doesn't happen for ya overnight. I'm using between 14-16 tracks for my drums. I actually stopped putting the second kick up because I like to mic the kicks inside and out, so that's 4 mics and tracks I don't have.. So I just do one kick drum with 2 mics. I've used everything from Mackie mixers, tascam portastudios, outboard gear... to a laptop with Cubase 13 pro currently, but I don't have any interfaces to record into my computer yet. I don't play enough to spend the money right now. But a little on me.... last show I played w/former band. Took out my PDP kit I bought off my former studio roomate, Paul Bostaph. It wouldn't be correct but I'd suggest getting a double-kick pedal and just using one EAD.

@@ChrisrZ28 I know, right. But it'd get you by. It's interesting, you and I are facing the same problem. I want to record drum videos too but the equipment needed is well outside my budget. I want to get a good electric kit but it's the same budget issues. It's been frustrating. I just want to drum and I can't until I get the electric kit. Lol
