Well we enjoy watching your struggle/discoveries with each camera. But so much complaining that the GRiii is not the GRii... buy a Grii?? Flash/color problems instantly solved!
@OneMonthTwoCameras9 ай бұрын
The GRII is just not reliable enough to spend the money that is being asked for it these days IMHO. I got the GRIII cheaper than the going rate for a GRII and it will have a much longer life given its age, so to me it comes down to a cost benefit ratio decision. If the GRII wasn't so mechanically problematic, I would buy it over the GRIII in a heartbeat.
@quentinnewark27459 ай бұрын
@@OneMonthTwoCameras I hadn’t heard that the GRii was physically flakey. Prone to dust perhaps. I think the solution to colour is raw plus a pre-made formula you throw on. I am about to take receipt of a GRiiix. I had GRii twice and loved it. Especially b&w. But sold twice because I always end up with a dozen+ cameras and can’t decide which one to use. Now just three. Tiny Rollei 35 for film. GRiiix EDC. Sony A7C for lenses. Fingers crossed.

I had a GR2 and sold it. I loved it and the DNG colours were great. But it developed an issue where when powering on the leaf shutter stayed closed and only opened after taking a “blank” shot. I now have a GR3x as I prefer its focal length for versatility. The positive film is just not as nice as the GR2 but I really do prefer to shoot raw and the files are great with minor tweaks. It came with me to New York with my Leica Monochrom

I'm going on year 3 of having a GRIII, and it's been an incredible EDC, epescially as a dad. Knowing I can just put in my pocket or a bag gives me no excuse to not have it on me. With documenting my kid, the easy one hand operation, very pocketable, and it's ability to turn on and off in an instant, makes it a great package. Totally agree about the wifi, which i think is something not mentioned enough about this camera. I could probably count on one hand the times i've had problems with it and was usually user error. The other piece that you touched on that isn't mentioned enough is the files. The raw DNG's out of this camera are my favorite files I've worked with. They can be pushed so well and make editing them enjoyable. My camera does have the rotating dial issue that you mentioned. It makes it completely unusable to go full manual mode, but using aperture priority most of the time has made it a non-issue for me. The GRiii is one of those cameras where I've bought multiple accessories for it, and I always end up leaving them off/returning them. It has such a great form factor for such a small camera. I have large hands and the GRiii is one of the more comfortable cameras I've held. I have a fuji xt30 to have an interchangable lens setup, but I probably use the GRiii 80% of the time.

Quite the refreshing deep dive into what is already a highly, almost overly reviewed camera. Amazed I stayed thru the entire video, as I typically dont watch new GRIII video reviews anymore having seen hundreds of them before and after purchasing my own GRIII many months ago. Thank you for this content and I love your “no bad cameras” approach (which proves truer and truer the longer I shoot and continue to pursue this craft/art)

Thank you for this review. There is a cult following for the GR. It is very popular in the street photography community. I was resistant to the GRiii because I don’t like the 28mm focal length. It is too wide for me unless I’m at a parade or demonstration. Yes, there is the digital zoom feature. 15MP at 35mm and seven MP at 50mm. I want more MP at 50mm for printing. So for me no GRiii. Then Ricoh came out with the GRiiiX. That model gives me a 40mm full frame focal length. Now we’re talking. The X is the same body and everything is the same as the iii except the focal length. This body gives me 40-60mm. With the teleconverter I’m up to 70mm. Now we’re talking. I’m new to this body. Having problems with the focus as in it won’t. Have reset and it won’t snap, touch, or autofocus other than in automatic.The macro focus isn’t on. I’ll figure it out. I too use a viewfinder. I miss an EVF. I’m getting use to only using the fixed LCD. The Ricoh viewfinder is expensive, ~$150 or 200, and not an EVF. The two options are get used to using the fixed LCD the way this one handed body is designed to operate. Plan B is purchase a Chinese viewfinder with plastic lenses. They have poor optics(@ that price what do I expect?) but they can help me frame the image. I haven’t opted for this yet. Yes, the Ricoh has the film simulations (Fuji speak). I too love the hard B&W. Very contrasty. Reminds me of Daido Moriyama, who used a GR for his look. The negative film looks good too. My favorite accessory is the JJC(there are other manufacturers) thumb grip. It makes holding the GR so much more comfortable. This is cheap at ~$12. Well worth it. The Panasonic GM1 is very small. Emma really loves it. I love the slightly larger GX85/9 M43 body. The L monochrome D on the Gx9 is my favorite B&W jpeg. With the PL 15mm lens this setup is killer. They both have a flash but I never use it. Like all small mirrorless cameras this body eats batteries. The battery is tiny. The solution is true for all small mirrorless cameras. Buy an extra two or three. Bring at least one in your pocket or bag. They are cheap and light. Look for the GR used. Found mine for $650 on Craigslist. They show up for that price from time to time. Then jump on it. Fast. They don’t linger and neither should you. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Excellent review. Thank you for the accessories you mentioned. Ricoh had a GR day in Vegas a few weeks ago. I went to the event and borrowed a GRIIIX for a few hours. For JPEGs I shot in bleached by pass setting while also recording in RAW. The focus slowness issue was there for sure. However, overall I was very impressed with quality of the images. The lens is crazy sharp. I shot a lot at f2.8 and the images are in the same league as my Sony A7RIV and super sharp Tamron lenses. One thing I did not expect was how good the colors looked. The colors pop like crazy. They look a lot better than my Sony files! They did something with the sensor as I saw almost no color noise from the sensor at high ISOs. The noise that is there looks like beautiful film grain. Bravo Ricoh for creating a true pocketable street camera. Despite its shortcomings and the quirks, the GRIII is a winner in my book.

Thanks for the tips, that finger grip is appealing. I shoot a couple of older Ricohs (GRDIV and GX200) and a thing that's worked for me is figuring out that I can leave the camera in Snap focus mode and still have one-button access to autofocus, without having to dig through the menus to switch or having to dedicate a custom dial to it. The trick is switching to macro mode (via the macro button on the back of the camera), which forces autofocus. At least with my cameras, Ricoh doesn't restrict focus to only macro-range subjects. It might be a bit slower than shooting autofocus in non-macro mode, but I really don't mind the speed -- it's not a speedy autofocus in any configuration.

Really digging your channel, love this video. One thing: there is a solution to the GRii vs GRiii issue that will blow your mind-waaay better than the Perf stuff, or monkeying around w/settings in camera. Get a Calibrite ColorChecker & create a few profiles-one for full sun, one for a cloudy sky, basically your common shooting conditions. And then use those as the BASE for .cube based profiles. By default, ACR & Lightroom mix to Adobe Standard v2. You can see it when you choose a profile & mix down to 0. That's really bad. Instead, you can make new profiles with your ColorChecker DCP files as the base & then pull in some fun .cube luts-like Portra, or Velvia, or Kodachrome simulations. It sounds complicated, but once you get your ColorChecker profiles dialed in, it's totally mind-blowing. Like, you'll want to go back and re-develop every photo you've ever taken. If you want more info, or a demo, let me know! I've had my Griii for abt 5 years & it had the dial issue, but I was able to fix it. Now the dust cleaning feature is broken, not sure how to fix that.

I bought the original GR in 2015 and used the intervalometer to make BTS videos. Unfortunately, I left it behind in a hotel room after a shoot a few months later so I never got to know it. I finally bought myself the GRIIIx for my birthday in October.... and returned it for a GRIII. Although I greatly prefer 40mm over 28mm, 40mm is too limiting indoors and in cars. I will eventually buy the GRIIIx again to complement it. I'm hoping they make a GRIIIz with a 90mm equivalent lens and a 135mm teleconverter. Those three cameras would cover 21mm, 28mm, 40mm, 60mm, 90mm, 135mm equivalents (35mm, 75mm, and 170mm including crop modes) and then I would have an ultra compact and very light system that covers 90% of what I get paid to shoot.

Thank you. Very nice video as usual. Having never owned a Ricoh digital camera, I have no experience with it, and I don't know what you can compare it to, but I can't help mention the Sony NEX series. I got the NEX-5N with the 16mm f2.8 pancake lens + the x0.75 ultra wide converter and the standard zoom lens 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 + the small flash for a bargain price. I already had an M42 to NEX adapter, I was sent by mistake (I had ordered the M42 to Nikon F adapter), so my M42 lenses can be used as well, and I really like the experience of using my old M42 Tessar Carl Zeiss 50mm f2.8 Jena DDR lens on the NEX-5N - it just works. It's about the same size as an Olympus Pen E-PM1 Mini, so one of my smallest kits - especially with the 16mm pancake lens. I'm considering upgrading to the NEX-7 for the built in viewfinder and higher resolution - or the NEX-5R, but so far I'm enjoying my NEX-5N and the 16mm pancake lens as my daily carry - even if it only has an on screen mode dial and other limitations. Oh, and it's so much cheaper than the Ricoh GRII and III cameras, I wonder if the GRIII is worth the extra cost.

I can't use full press to snap as it seems to forget my half press when shooting normally resulting in a lot of blurry shots and having to shoot triples of the same shot. I think I'll send it in for repairs when some money comes up. I bought the i-plate finger grip from Peak Design and it's pretty perfect for how I shoot the GRiii. It's either in a jacket pocket or a sling. I got the official leather case for when in transit and using another camera as my snap camera. Oh my IBIS seems kinda sketchy so I'll often turn that off. A bit of a shame but fine. One of the big draws coming from the GRii was the adoption of USB C so now almost everything I have is one cable. The extra megapixels helps for the in camera cropping too.

In fact I prefer the GRD IV, albeit being 12 years old, to my GR III. However the GRD IV is much slower to write to SD if in DNG mode. I guess the GRD IV is just like a smaller sensor version of the GR II. The GRD IV is the artiest camera of the lot IMHO. It has worked fine even if 28mm is wider than ideal for me as the only focal length and I still shoot a film now and then with it. I've of course considered a digital one and even used the first (small sensor) version for a while, but I just can't get over the no integrated viewfinder design. If Ricoh ever add a EVF - even a tiny one - to the 40mm GR-version I'd get one.

Another fabulous, entertaining review, and loved your sharing your GR journey's ups and downs, and your cool GR accessories. When you elaborate on how your goals and desires have evolved for 2024 in the next video, I'd be most interested in what makes you want to pick up a camera for an "opportunistic outing" and what aspects of a camera tend to leave you cold over time and make you pick something else? You have never been one to shy away from larger heavier cameras, but it seems you are now wanting to go light and minimalist for EDC shots. I personally am looking above all for a satisfying user experience with a high-quality feel and pleasing haptics (feel of buttons, dials, lens rings, etc), ideally with more tactile exposure dials,, and a large EVF,. I'm pretty sure the GR would be too fiddly, small, & cramped, and plasticky for me (larger hands), and I would be willing to sacrifice one-handed compactness for a more engaging, tactile & robust user experience. When might you decide to pick up the Nikon Zf with a couple lenses now (in a larger sling) if the Ricoh has become your new EDC---maybe for a more "intentional" or artistic photo outing? Thanks for your enthusiastic, eloquent sharing. I'm hooked on your channel now.

The GR3x is the camera for me. Not sure if you’ve tried it but the retro film look it has is pretty awesome. It is strong and probably not what you’re looking for but I recommend giving it a try

I'll have to look that up!

An incredible camera, but I personally found it too fiddly so moved it on. Instantly regretted it, so got the GR Digital III. I found that older form factor a bit better for handling and the image quality was stellar. What surprised me is how similar the UI across two very different models are the same. They really got the design of this camera right in the first instance. Currently looking at the GXR with m-mount option.
@OneMonthTwoCameras9 ай бұрын
I've heard great things about the Digitals. The GXR with the M mount module is definitely a fun one. Had that as well; somewhat sad to have let it go.

I'm primarily a street photographer but I decided against the Ricoh GR cameras because of the dust and reliability/durability issues. These can easily be resolved if the camera is made 10% bigger to incorporate weather sealing and more durable components.

Wow, this review was next level! Did you copy the exact same settings as Mr. Button Eye, or did you tweak it as well?

Thank you!! I made some very minor tweaks but basically was faithful to his recipe.

Ahahaha my fellow camera hoarder. I had the same problem. Got a gr2, didn't really use it much because, I had a few too many cameras in rotation. Then when I lived in Brazil I got the GR3 which is nearly absolutely impossible to find there. I hated the colours and operation so much I went back to a Panasonic Gm1.

I still adore my GR original soooooo much...and the colors ❤

I probably like the small form factor most of all. I can deal with the “issues”. It would be the most expensive camera I’ve ever bought. The biggest issue for me is having opportunity to make pictures. I like the fact that you talk about your bias. What some reviewers are reluctant to do.

Another great video. I loved my GRIII. Absolutely loved it. Shot on the street through the whole pandemic (safely) with my GRIII. And then.... the rear dial defect showed its ugly head. I babied this camera so much and yet.... my rear dial is plagued with the same issue many others have experienced. So..... $1,000..... and my rear dial doesn't work, and even worse, it will register phantom inputs - randomly changing settings while shooting. I asked a Ricoh rep about simply adding a setting to disable the rear dial. It would at least prevent the phantom inputs. It seems Ricoh is avoiding addressing the issues despite how common it is. 😢 So buyers be careful, please. And their repair service in the USA is run through a single dealer (Precision Camera) that charges $356 minimum for any repair/evaluation + $30 for shipping. 😔
@OneMonthTwoCameras9 ай бұрын
Ooof that's terrible. Sorry to hear. The build quality is definitely a concern with these cameras.

@@OneMonthTwoCameras And I'm sooo happy for people who aren't affected by it. I know it's not everyone. It was just such a disheartening thing to experience inside of one year of owning the camera. And then to encounter a repair cost that, at minimum, is a third the price of the camera..... it will be hard to ever by a GR again.

Thank you for your lovely comprehensive review. I am considering buying a GRiii. I’m hesitating between the iii and iiiX. Assuming street photography what would you consider?
@OneMonthTwoCameras7 ай бұрын
for me the 28mm field of view is more flexible. You can crop to 40mm if needed (though of course it won't be the true 40mm fall off) but you can't go wider with the X. If I were more focused on still life and portraits, that is where I think the X variant might pull ahead but for everything else, the standard III with its 28mm takes priority for me.
@alfredrobijn1317 ай бұрын
Thank you. The 28mm was my choice so now I’m sure 😀

Weird question, I recently was able to score a 1D mk 1, and I'm taking a trip to New Mexico soon... should I bring my GR3 or the 1D for the CCD colors? Im bringing my large format 4x5 already, so size is not too big of an issue. Want to know your thoughts, thanks! Love your channel.

Love the GRiii, goes everywhere with me on a small belt pouch with just enough room for 2 spare batteries, had it a few years now got it quite cheap as it was a display model, the ring on the back doesn't work in rotate anymore but its not a problem, it has a dust spot on the sensor but it does get placed on the ground and walls etc at night, sometimes in the wet, would i buy another when it dies, no, as much as i like it the price now is ridiculous

so glad I found your video! I have this same setup with the same flash and when I went to shoot it in a dark setting the other day... well it was a total failure. Would you be willing to share how you're using it paired with the camera? Mainly for me was I couldn't get it to fire when I wanted to or I just got a ton of blurry photos. Any advice? Get the GR3x. Treat yourself. I had a similar experience with the GR3x. I had the 2 and wanted the 3x as a companion and the positive film just didn’t do it for me. Returned it. Ended up getting again when my GR2 developed the problem with the sticking leaf shutter. Wouldn’t change it now and it’s a wonderful carry everywhere Also - the GM5 is great. Picked it up myself and now might get the 14mm to be my GR2 substitute
