Hi Michaela, I love the video! I go to Boston University for marine science, but our research is definitely more focused on marine inverts than mammals. Good luck on your college search!

Weird question but I have heard the University of Miami offers great Marine Biology programs (and I do live in Florida and I was looking for in-state schools) and I wanted to see your input on this school if it's really good for marine biology or not! Thank you!

I actually went to the University of Miami and majored in Marine Science/Biology and highly recommend it. From research opportunities to job connections, it's definitely a school that allows you to explore different fields within the major. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these universities especially UCSC. I just got accepted for Marine Bio, and I'm deciding to say yes to them or to UC Davis. I'm also a transfer student from a community college. Best of luck on your journey!

Juli Limon Thanks! Do you know more info about their marine mammal research??
@julilimon8144 жыл бұрын
michaela mansholt Yeah! I’m involved in the marine mammals stranding network. We mostly respond to a lot of stranded seals and sea lions but we respond to almost all marine mammals (except sea otters). I think we’re one of the few stranding networks that respond to sharks and rays as well. Unfortunately there’s been quite a few whale stranding events the past few years which we respond to as well. Also, we perform a lot of necropsies on the stranded marine mammals we take in to determine cause of death and collect tissue sample for future use. One lab has a few captive marine mammals that are used to study physiology, diving behaviors, acoustics, and sensory topics. This lab is also apart of our little on site aquarium so if you wanted to continue working in an aquarium setting they have docent and aquarist jobs there, as well as all of the research internship. We have a lab that focuses on sea otters, their recolonization of areas along the west coast, and their impact on their ecosystems. There’s a lot of elephant seal and just seal and sea lion research in general because a local island (Año Nuevo island) is a huuggge breeding area for seals and sea lions. A ton of our labs will use those marine mammals to learn about bioacoustics, reproductive strategies, diving behaviors, and ecology things. As far as I know there isn’t any orca research but if you’re interested in whales there’s a lab the focuses on the behavioral ecology of different whales. Most of their research seems to be out of state so I think that the students who help on that usually do what we call a field quarter. I’m not sure if you know what a field quarter is but it’s basically you doing research instead of class work to learn the content that’s in classes. There’s field quarters about a ton of different topics and the count for different classes so what you learn is super dependent on what you’re studying (I’m going to do a field quarter about marine ecology in Corsica, France so I’ll be learning a lot about marine ecology, fish, and invertebrates). I’m sure there’s plenty I’m forgetting and don’t know about because my research interest isn’t in marine mammals but one thing I really like about our marine mammal researchers is that a lot of them are at the top of their research fields. A lot of our researchers are the reason we know a lot about marine mammals and almost any scientific paper you read has one of our professors listed as an author. They really know what they’re talking about and they all really care about conservation. I really love the marine bio department here and if you come to UCSC you’ll probably love it too.

My two sense would be to first go for an ordinary biology degree or a general science degree b/c you would most likely learn more things and techniques. Good luck on your new academic journey!
