It's actually good. What should also have been noted is that Chrysalis was a surprise to the audience. What we knew going in to the season finale at the start of the episode was that the main character's brother was getting married, and her friends were asked to come along to help plan out the rest of the wedding. The whole "Invasion of the capital city and a villain taking out not one but two godhorses in a manipulative bid for power" thing was actually developed in a way that's structurally very respectable.

Honestly, and I hate how I know this stuffs, the Changelings don’t make use of many physical weapons or seem to care about or need medical supplies. The only things they would need is living food sources, which they can take on the March. And due to their flight they can move around mountains and rivers more effectively than ground limited opponents. As a result, Changeling logistics would center around destroying the logistics of their opponents while using superior maneuvering to evade proper conflicts until they’ve starved out the opposition.

(Also): In THE MLP MOVIE (2017), the invading "Yeti" forces also use "black armor" that is impervious to magic (as well as "black cages" of the same material to capture unicorns). It is assumed that the changelings simply "stole" a bit of of that metal using their shapeshifting abilities (then fine-tunning it to not affect their specific kind of magic).

I had considered starting my own KZbin series showing how different IPs could theoretically exist in the 40K universe inspired by how much of FiM's lore lines up surprisingly well with 40K lore. The Tree of Harmony is pretty much one for one with the Tree of Life, the Changelings are equine versions of Lakrymoles, the Sirens' entire MO is identical to that of the species who enslaved entire populations into worshipping them that Horus and Sanguinius fought during the Great Crusade. Being on Equestria was essentially a retirement plan he gave her, since he knew Earth would be in for some extremely rough times in the future.

It's part of why pony culture tends to be so friendship and unity focused, to avoid another ice age because ponies just can't get along. Good Trooper Gilda sort of expands on this in a scenario where ponies (and Griffons) actually do kill the opposition, where after a battle the Pegasus assemble a storm to wash away all the carnage so everypony doesn't get so down and droopy it attracts Windigoes; Gleaming Shield even says to Gilda, who believes Windigoes to be a myth, “The pegasus position on that question is that if they keep to their traditions, the windigo will continue to remain a myth."

Not going to lie I grew up watching Powerpuff Girls, so for me watching MLP was a breath of fresh air from all of the "modern day" cartoons that got unbearably stupid and dumbed down for the "child audience". In the series after the movie, the main conflict was that foreign nationals might erode Equestria’s culture and the villain at the arc’s start was a stodgy old man who thought that Equestria shouldn’t change to suit outsiders. This flies in the face of earlier more sensible episodes, like when the yaks were allowed to preserve their culture despite being viewed as weird and backward, because it’s their people and their culture. But no, the new lesson is that the ponies need to give up their own cultural uniqueness and let outsiders’ wants dictate their people’s behavior.

Most the fandom will cite the comic origins as the true origins of the Changelings, but what they miss is, at the end of the comic, Queen Chrysalis admitted to lying about everything she was saying before she attacked the mane characters and escaped. Even if the comic does override the art source book, they would still be a quasi undead construct.

As a Brony who stuck around for six seasons and went to several cons Changelings and Chrysalis are still one of the coolest things they did with that show. Yes the Wending Episode has plot holes but it’s still one of my favorites for how arty and unexpectedly dark and epic it gets. That and I like Shining Armor and his introduction. Back when you could betray men in a valiant light in a girls show.

Season 1’s finale was a goofy, slapstick party gone wrong. It was when MLP was still, for all Lauren Faust’s efforts, a harmless little girl’s show that adult men happened to enjoy as well. Then season 2’s finale came along and we got open hoof-to-hoof combat against the ravenous brood of _an undead insectoid succubus horse-sorceress._

It even bears a startling resemblance to the "Devil" Tarot card. And while we look at the window, the tortured screams of ponies can be heard. A major part of it all is Discord's Faux Affably Evil personality. It's just so disturbing. He loves what he's doing to them. He loves breaking the minds of the mane cast and he didn't even need to do the mundane version through gaslighting; as he showed with Fluttershy, he could've skipped straight to the instant supernatural kind. He did it because he wanted to. No wonder Celestia and Luna imprisoned him in stone for eternity! The World of Chaos Ponyville becomes while under Discord's rule is another example; soap roads; floating, upside down buildings; odd gravity in general; rapid switching between day and night; strange animals; cotton candy clouds raining chocolate milk; a checkerboard ground; false buldings; and many crazed ponies acting very unlike themselves. And that's only a small taste of his power, "the first changes". Last one ;) The way she says she doesn't want to remember King Sombra's reign involved outright slavery. From the general reactions of the Crystal Ponies, they are clearly traumatized by the experience. One of Sombra's traps involves literal nightmares, trapping the victim in a nightmare that is inescapable unless someone else wakes them up. When the barrier keeping him out fails, one of his citizens screams "I can't take it!" and rushes towards the edge of the cliff, before bumping into him as he ascends the cliff. We're not explicitly told why she was running there, but we can guess the implication was to throw herself off it rather than live under is rule again. Later, during one of the alternate timelines, Sombra is shown to have mind controlled and enslaved the entire population of his empire, notably, the eyes of his slaves are the same as those under the effect of his nightmare spell. After his ressurection by Grogar, Sombra goes on a rampage. He successfully breaches the crystal palace to reclaim his empire again, and instead of going after Shining and Cadence (The monarchs), he moves straight towards Flurry Heart, their infant daughter while laughing, before he is stopped. When it is revealed that Fluttershy is Discord's friend, Sombra immediately shoots a black magic laser at her to force Discord to intervene and become wounded. Despite being an excellent moment for the Mane 6, Sombra's surprisingly Family-Unfriendly Death can really catch a first time viewer off guard. It looks like his skin is melting off as he disintegrates, and if you time it right, you can see what looks like his jaw disintegrating with it. Of course, his first death where he was detonated into a thousand pieces by a spell was not all that family friendly to start with. He is consistently portrayed as a bona-fide sadist who managed to become a powerful sorceror and take over an empire.

A little bit annoyed that he skipped over a very important aspect of the changelings creation. One of the bloodsuking flies around the bog drank blood from Starswirl and that fly was subsequently eaten by the tree. THAT is what led to changelings being what they are.

Lauren was also know for Foster Home for Imaginary Friends. Powerpuff+Foster's got us the MLP reboot, and it was wild. There's 2-part anti-communist plot. There are DBZ fights. As a self-confessed brony at the height of the fandom this was a genuinely great April Fool's video, MLP was part of what got me through Uni knowing that I could always look forward to some light hearted cartoon ponies on Saturday mornings with some great music and art produced by a community that didn't care what others thought of them, so seeing some of their sometimes ridiculous antics presented so seriously by one of my favourite 40K content creators is almost nostalgic and honestly pretty great, well played Arch, well played /)

Fun fact: there's actually an MLP fanfiction where the pony world exists undiscovered within the Halo universe and Twilight accidentally teleports herself to Harvest, which... is basically the same thing. Grimdarkness isn't even unusual in MLP fanfiction, as Fallout: Equestria is one of the most popular fics in the fandom; if anything, the show is more suited to Grimdark than Noblebright. I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find a match made in heaven between MLP and 40k.

An excellent retelling of our history. I might mention one bit many have missed. The queen intentionally antagonized Twilight in the caves until she was firing lethal blasts at her image, only then did she find the real princess. If her plan had worked, one of those lethal blasts would have been the end of Cadence in her already weakened state, scarring Twilight forever.
