I discovered them in 1983 with the “War” album and, as fate would have it, I saw them two weeks later at Shea’s Theater in Buffalo. I’ve often said that so many of their songs are what going to church ought to be like. How can one not be spiritually moved while listening to “Drowning Man.” Like any band, they’ve had their lowlights as well as their highlights but, overall, the band has been a blessing to this old man for over 40 years.

Good list, I would definitely include Zoo Station, Stay Faraway So Close, Original of the Species, Gone, Fez, Moment of Surrender, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Walk On, and some others!

I got into U2 from hearing songs off their "War" album on the radio in early 1983. I also bought their "Under A Blood Red Sky" live E.P. that year. And I saw their "Red Rocks" concert film. I bought many U2 albums over the years, after that. But, not all. I would skip the albums where the songs didn't do much for me. Like "Zooropa", "Pop" and "No Line On The Horizon". I also bought many of their live DVD's. I got their 20th anniversary "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" CD box set for a pretty good price this past Cyber Monday. I wasn't going to get it, but it was worth it. I like the "How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb" "shadow" album, with some interesting outtakes and early versions. And it included the live 2005 Chicago concert on 2 CD's. I enjoyed that album they gave away on iTunes, I even bought the 2 CD edition. 😊 But, I skipped their follow-up album, and the recent acoustic re-workings CD.

I saw U2 twice live in Edinburgh at Murrayfield Stadium, in 1987 on The Joshua Tree tour, and 1997 on the PopMart tour, just a few days after Princess Diana's death, so there was a solemn tribute for her. One of the greatest live bands I've seen, but no interest in their output in the 21st century sadly. My favourite tracks, Spanish Eyes, Sunday Bloody Sunday (Live), Gloria (Live), Lemon (Perfecto Mix), Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me, Out Of Control, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, The Electric Co., Another Time Another Place, New Year's Day, In God's Country, Pride, With Or Without You.

In chronological order as there's no way I could put this in a proper order, except that "Where The Streets Have No Name" would be my favorite: 1) An Cat Dubh / Into The Heart 2) Electric Co. 3) I Fall Down 4) I Threw A Brick Through A Window 5) Sunday Bloody Sunday 6) Like A Song 7) The Refugee 8) Red Light 9) Surrender 10) A Sort of Homecoming 11) The Unforgettable Fire 12) Wire 13) Bad (Live) 14) Three Sunrises 15) Where The Streets Have No Name 16) Bullet The Blue Sky 17) Running To Stand Still 18) In God's Country 19) One Tree Hill 20) Exit 21) Hawkmoon 269 22) God (Part 2) 23) All I Want Is You 24) Night And Day (preferably the "Steel String Mix") 25) Zoo Station 26) Until The End of the World 27) Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses 28) The Fly 29) The Lady With The Spinning Head 30) Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me

I still haven't played those U2 albums you sent me in that gift box. I just have other CDs I wish to play more right now, but I will get to them soon enough.

I love the first two U2 albums Boy & October. I Will Follow was a particularly fresh single when it was released with the exceptional Production of Steve Lillywhite. Love the single A Celebration & it's B Side Party Girl. They were phenomenal live on their early dates. Destined to be stars .

I like their first four albums plus Under a Blood Red Sky - they remind me of high school. Mostly in order, my best 30 are: Tomorrow, Bad, Surrender, Gloria, I Will Follow, Wire, Drowning Man, October, The Unforgettable Fire, An Cat Dubh, Fire, I Threw a Brick Through a Window, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Running to Stand Still, A Sort of Homecoming, The Electric Co, Exit, 11 O’clock Tick Tock, Seconds, Like a Song, Party Girl, 40, New Year’s Day, The Refugee, Out of Control, Indian Summer Sky, Desire, The Fly, I Fall Down, and God Part II.

As for bands other than hard rock, R.E.M. and U2 were offered as bands representing the 80s. I personally preferred R.E.M.

I tend to agree! They have gotten a little tired. Bono has since apologised for the Apple problem but to his credit, I never saw it anything to give up on a band for. No Line on the Horizon was the moment where they started to be a little bit too sleepy for my taste. But Get On Your Boots for me is a great song. That tune has the same energy as Pump It Up by Elvis Costello. The title is a little bit throwaway, but it's better for them to have a less serious side. I mean, Roger Taylor wrote 'Get on your rock and roll boots' on Modern Times Rock and Roll which I think is arguably a dumber line, but I like both songs.

I love their music up until Zooropa. A few okay songs after that, but I can't stand what they've been doing for the last decade or so. My top 10: 1. The Unforgettable Fire 2. Sunday Bloody Sunday 3. Lemon 4. Bullet the Blue Sky 5. Mysterious Ways 6. Gloria 7. Bad (live aid) 8. Where the Streets Have No Name 9. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For 10. One

Maybe not regarded as their very best but I always liked Stuck In A Moment as Bono wrote it as tribute to Michael Hutchence from Inxs.

No Line In The Horizon is the last U2 album I bought and I’m not exactly sure why I stopped there as I quite like it. It was great to see So Cruel on your list.

Larry,I've always thought U2 were good but I've never been a fan,I remember years ago working with a woman who loved them and knowing I was a musician couldn't understand why I wasn't a fan,I just thought all their songs sounded similar and had a kind of drone sound to them with the Edge's guitar sound, they were good for sure but just not for me,great thumbnail by the way,you can see you're really getting to Bono in it. Albums after 'How to Dismantle' are rather week. Their last great song was Moment of Surrender which I think was on 'No Line on the Horizon'

Listen to "The little things that give you away" off the most recent album. Very good classic U2.

I am a big U2 fan. Grew up with their music. But as you said, in recent years they've just been trying too hard to stay relevant. Their last good album was No Line. There were a few good songs off Songs of Innocence. I will still go see them in concert if they come around again. I have seen them 6 times in concert.

I am also a fan of U2. Starting from Unforgettable Fire to Songs of Experience, I have them all except for Pop. The debacle with Apple I think ruined a lot of people's opinion of Songs of Innocence because if it's free it kind of diminished it's value. Too bad because it was not that bad an album. But I agree that the 2 Songs of... albums were not as good as No Line.

I understand. They were cool. But, alas, lass, they like their toxic choice of titles, have a shelf life, or half life; time's up, Bono/ band! October is really deep. Angel of Harlem my fave song by Dem. And youre correct, them staying' relevant' is the worst thing they coulda done.

Like you ,I was obsessed with them too, right below the Beatles. War album is my favorite, after Pop ,I stop listening to them, they got into the electronic sound too much

Hey Larry! I love that you hate some of their music. I've always said that Adam Clayton has the easiest job in R&R. To call him an average bassist would be insulting to me and other average bassists....Cheers!
