I just wanna say thank you for having this channel! My best friend, before she passed away, was deaf but never learned ASL. Never got the hang of it and just dedicated herself to reading lips. Since her passing, I've always wanted to learn ASL in her place and have FINALLY begun my ASL journey in an online course. It's been very helpful and I've learned a lot, but there's only so much you can learn by watching the basic banter in the course I'm taking. I have no one to practice with in real life, but I have a feeling I'd still be struggling quite a bit if I were to find myself in a deaf community and had to rely on the things I've learned thus far. Seeing someone enthusiastically rant or tell casual stories has already been extremely helpful in only the past two days since I've found your channel. So again, I just wanted to say thank you for providing these videos. It's helps a lot to have someone so entertaining and charismatic to offer up this window into their world.

You know, at first, when I came across your channel and you mentioned that you went to Gallaudet University, I immediately thought "is she going to criticise Deaf people like me?" I don't hold any ill feelings toward any Deaf students who attend Gallaudet but I'm slightly frustrated with most of their attitude toward us. (I know not all Deafies are mean) I'm Multilingual Deaf woman from the UK, attended to mainstream education institutions with Deaf units my whole life. I grew up in both worlds and I love both worlds but I do get judged quite harshly mostly by Deaf people more than Hearing people. I did get bullied by hearing kids back in primary school but they were ignorant so I don't blame them, EVERYBODY gets bullied at some point. But I get truly judged and harassed by DEAF people in college, uni and onwards because I'm either not "Deaf enough" or betrayed them because I mingle with hearing people or the fact I'm a Multilingual. Around Uni time, I met some Gallaudet Alumnus and they were so not friendly. They shamed me, told me that I should be fully integrated into Deaf world and not hearing world. I obviously clapped back because they refused to respect my upbringings and tried to force me to neglect my identity and be like them. I got them to check their own attitude. I've asked some of my Deaf friends, they said they had same experience when coming across Gallaudets students/alumnus. They have a bit of "reputation" around the world, especially in Europe. I appreciate their Deaf Pride, I feel the same, but in their eye, they believed I'm not equal as them. And that pisses me off. Like what you said, those hearing kids made fun of you and you felt frustrated because you're not different from them, just different communication. I felt the same with these Deaf people, just different schools. So when I saw this video, it piqued my interest, I was ready to hear you criticise mainstream school and etc just like these Gallaudet alumnus. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the opposite and you highlighted pros/cons about BOTH sides. That was awesome. So thank you for this video. I feel more appreciative. Because I'm the same as you, i didn't want to go to Deaf school because it did not match my education needs. But unlike you, I didn't want to try out a Deaf school near me because they don't have core subjects on their curriculum, (I'm 28, back then it was so different, now its slightly better than it used to be back in my time) they had entry level subjects. I just decided nah. My mindset since I could walk is i would choose my education over friends, over Deaf people even because I knew as a Deaf person, we will have to work harder, to prove everybody wrong, that we can do it just like them. That's why I just didn't care if I ended up being isolated (Luckily I didn't...) Anyway I was kinda surprised to hear that even you went to Gallaudet (obv coming from mainstream background), you still shared similar struggle as I did, being in the middle, the sense of not belonging. I was the same. Even now, I'm still in the middle of both worlds and the mini divisions within the entire world both side but I'm fine with that because I'm my own person and I don't give a shit as from day one, I know who I am and I was lucky to have opportunities in BOTH worlds, I'm able to move both worlds and able to communicate both ways you know? So Deaf people, just be who you are, be proud of your identity, of where you come from, which school you went to. Just own it. Don't give anybody your permission to define you, only you get to do that. If you come across idiots that criticise you, clap back! Educate them. Be kind and polite. These type of people are ignorant and it's up to you to educate them and if they still refuse to listen, just walk away and just know it's not you, it's not your faults. Many Deaf people I know blamed themselves, and unfortunately, out of those people, three Deaf people I know personally, at different times, decided to chose suicide because of all of this BS. And it is scary to actually witness how they were rejected by their own people and it really did the number on their mental wellbeing. And it sucks. In any world, you got to have the thick skin, don't let any BS get to you, and most importantly, don't let anyone dim your light inside you. Sorry for sh*t long comment but just had to say all of this. Enjoyed your video and your channel. You got a subscriber here. :)

Hello!!! I THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN INSPIRING COMMENT! yes, I completely understand where you come from and being in the middle of both worlds. It gave you both experiences to experience where you can understand BOTH, a way to educate BOTH worlds. I would never regret about going to mainstream school for my own educational needs even though deaf schools may be good for social skills but the education system can be so so. After all, there is ALWAYS pros and cons. It even made me more disappointed with deaf people who are well known in the deaf community and their attitudes towards others who came with different backgrounds. the deaf community is so small and there is nothing wrong with coming from different backgrounds OR different spectrums of deafness. it is so sad that they became ignorant and cared for their reputations way more than interacting with other deaf people, they are missing it out but not us!!!! we get to experience and share with our experiences towards others, not them. smiles YES, you are completely right!! everyone else gets bullied in different reasons and experiences to share with. you gonna do you, not letting others stop you from achieving your own goal EVEN ELITE DEAF PEOPLE! they can be either jealous or other because they never get to experience with interacting the hearing world. they have been staying inside the bubble for so long time but you popped your bubble. again thank you for sharing your experience and your bravery.

I truly understand how much you went through a lot agony times between deaf and hearing world bullies but did not means they only such bad guy in both world but hey the only need focus on what best of you not think of others what they think of you because it not worth of anyone time because you deserve be happy that important. As far goes with deaf people who likely judged bullied its because they jealousy of someone not stay as deaf culture such as deaf identity but didnt matter which identity are, you just know what your heart wants most you chose for you nobody else. Not even deaf people it's not worth their time be ur enemies if you cant stay be legal deaf enough be with their group but hey itd not worth of fight for them. What worth fighting is your identity what you truly are than follow ur heart you will know what to do. If anybody insult you like deaf people judge you than please report office if happen. This main time its same thing meaning bully need stop!!! You doing great and amazing do what you are and yet still very young you have whole life opportunity front of you just prepare for a lot pressure of college. Good luck just be you don't worry about nobody else. You doing great!!!! 🙂🤟

I almost have the same experience with my mainstream school. I am Deaf and my whole family is hearing except my sister and they don’t really Sign Language at all, which really sucks. I always wanted to go to Deaf school because I was tired of communication barriers. My former schools had Deaf program and I was grateful for that, but I felt it wasn’t enough . I didn’t even accept myself as Deaf when I was young and I was very confused with my identity as Deaf like I sometimes accept who I am and then hearing people would say something bad and awful that changes my mind. I struggled with this issues with my childhood. I was even bullied by hearing people just because of my deafness. I finally learned more about Deaf culture and then I finally accept and am proud of who I am. I totally agree with you about the perspectives of Deaf people on mainstream and deaf school.

It is worse to feel like I don’t know which I belong in between the deaf world and hearing world. I am deaf. I don’t know what the deaf person looks like until I was 16 years old and I start social in deaf events. It’s a huge change for me. I lost many hearing friends at this time. I don’t know what I do. My hearing friends complain that I hang out with my deaf friends so much. It's hard to balance with both worlds. I have a few deaf friends. I accept from Gallaudet Universe in next fall. I feel more excited so I can more experience but many people don’t think I will not happy at college as I am in high school. I am like which I belong to? And who i am? My deaf friends encourage me to go to Gallaudet University to take more experiences than I do normally. Also, I love to listen your story about deaf person in mainstream so it help me feel better and not alone that way. I feel like I miss everything since ago so I have to patience through it.

I know the feeling, I've been in mainstream at public school for 6 years (1994-2000) and I have been through a lot like you where we'd feel isolated...few hearing friends while there is several more deaf/hard-of-hearing friends etc. Then transferred to The Learning center for the Deaf (2000-2009) from Elementary through High School, which is now Marie Philip School at TLC. TLC had a huge impact on me, I've gained development on social skills, independence living at Boys Residence etc. Vocational program - Career, Technology and Education - CTE where we develop skills such as copying, laminating to apply today's work field such as schools. My friendship has gotten better during that time, during mainstream i was so loss, isolated...also was bullied at first when joined TLC etc. You're not alone. I agree that Gallaudet will be great opportunityto increase more friendship. I attneded hearing college (Massasoit community College), with interpreters, no issues at all, and made new friends but as of now several has walked away....not easy.

Hi! I understand where you coming from but it your life do whatever you feel right and comfortable than go ahead what you chose ....I suggest not worry about anyone has say about you it's better ignore negative.....I understand that your deaf friends try encouraging you go college which good start and if hearing people complain why you hang out with deaf people than tell them why not because how they feel if hearing people don't social as deaf usually out with deaf event are big different. I grew up hearing world never been deaf cultures. My boyfriend hearing he learn sign language and speak communication we sometime miscommunications we not perfect and world not perfect either. Deaf culture against me because of my oral with sign language but hey that's too bad thatd not my problem. The thing is if hearing or deaf people upset where you were going its not their problem. It's your life you can do whatever you wish to go deaf events, friends and etc but most importantly is focus on your happiness 🙂

I love watching you sign!! I'm currently working on my bachelors in Deaf studies and will be going into an interpreting program once I graduate. ASL is beautiful and should definitely be offered in all levels of school- it's not much effort at all to learn basic phrases and communicate, even if you don't get all the syntax and grammar, so those of you commenting you want to learn, go out and do it! Use lifeprint.com it's a website one of my professors (he and his wife are Deaf and teach ASL) uses as an aid in class and its awesome.

Thanks for sharing! I’m a teacher, and hearing, but my first job was teaching at a school that had a program for Deaf/hard of hearing students and I was their teacher. We had interpreters for them and I also acted sometimes as interpreter to give the regular interpreters a break during assemblies and stuff. The Deaf kids at this school were often alone in class without their Deaf classmates, but they were involved completely in school life. They took drama, music, joined sports teams...the hearing kids would sit with them at lunch and learned to sign...it was a really great place to teach and I’m really sad the school closed. I’m sorry your mainstream experience wasn’t as fully involved but we are the sum of our experiences and it looks like you have taken the best lessons from it all!

A bonus to watching your videos is that they’re perfect for my lunch break at work; no sound/headphones necessary. But today I’m watching on Saturday morning, because your videos have such great content. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and experiences, not only for fellow Deaf people who are struggling with their identity in a majority hearing culture, but also for hearing people to learn a little bit about what it’s like to be Deaf in a hearing majority. I feel like your and other Deaf KZbinrs’ videos can help make hearing people more educated and better equipped to communicate with, and provide the proper accommodations for, Deaf people. Thank you for what you do!!

Just finished watching Deaf U and I loved it, which brought me here. I'm a hearing person but remember my elementary school having a group of deaf students, similar to what you mentioned. Most of my classes were mixed with hearing and deaf students and the ASL interpreters were absolutely amazing (from my perspective). We were all taught how to sign the alphabet and basic signs and I was able to have basic communication with my fellow classmates without an interpreter. From what I saw, as a hearing person, I though my school was very inclusive, but I've never knew (or thought to ask) the perspective of a deaf person and their experience. Thank you for sharing your experience!

ILY ur so smart!! I love your brain. You have all of the experiences. I have half and half experiences as well since I have gotten to a deaf school in kindergarten and preschool and mainstream until 8th grade and went to a deaf school in 8th cause I wanted to experience not being lonely so I went but It wasn’t really a good fit because the education level was low.. but.. I went to anther school for 9th and 10th (right now) and it had like 40-50 deaf kids. I’m so happy there because they let me attend mainstream classes but don’t suffocate me with not socializing. I love that you’re so respectful and intelligent ❗️❗️💛

Cheyenna the JR. HS & HS I went to had the mainstream program. It was smaller than yours. Counting the JR. HS & HS there were only around 12 deaf and hard of hearing students. We did not have many educational interpreters in my county in Northern California. So the students had to take buses to my schools. They also tried to sign the kids up for the same required classes. So they had enough interpreters for both schools. I'm hearing and became friends with most of the deaf & HOH students. I learned ASL because I was fascinated with the language and I also wanted to be able to communicate with them. To this day I'm still learning ASL & the culture. I will forever love and respect ASL. Sorry for TMI.

That’s interesting you experienced both deaf school and mainstream school. I grew up mainstream with other deaf kids in a deaf classroom. I had schedule to go to classrooms then back to Deaf classroom between classes. My interpreter would come with me to each class and back. I saw my deaf friends often that way besides lunch and recess. It wasn’t until 15 yr old for the first time, Mom and I moved to other state where I ended up only deaf student. It was pretty lonely most of the time but I forced myself to be brave and sat with group of hearing girls who seemed friendly. They didn’t get mad at me or be snobby cuz I can tell right behavior identify who is nice and who is snobby (from past experience in middle school). I made some hearing friends but sadly, they never asked me to hang out after school. It sucked. After graduation, I told my mom I wanted to attend NTID/RIT and after I went, I was much happier there because I get to social with both deaf and hearing that way. It fits with my life and needs because I was used to it. Oh, and guess what? My senior year in high school was the worst because I lost my terp. She choose to work at other job terp and my school couldn’t find a replacement. I was mad at that experience cuz I ended up with a typist who would type what is said. Awful time ever. Never again. Anyway, Thanks for sharing your experience. That was interesting! Yeah, every deaf person have different experiences! Cheers.

I can understand you so much. I’m not deaf but I lived in China for two years and even tho my school was an international one there were still many Chinese and Korean students who couldn’t speak good English. I was the only German in my grade and at some point also the only European. Although I could speak English with almost everyone it was still hard because the Chinese and Koreans and other people would just stay in their groups and speak their languages. Especially in PE classes, I was always left out in the teams. It’s very, very tough to be surrounded by many people with which you can’t properly communicate. Also cultural differences were hard to surpass sometimes. I’m very glad that I found a friend, she’s also Chinese, who I could talk to without her just ignoring me. We are still good friends although it has been over 2 years since we’ve seen each other the last time. I’m amazed on how you managed to go through your school time. I’ve been only in a similar situation for 2 years and it was already very hard. I respect you very much and I’m glad I have come across your channel.

I have a question. I’ve watched others who have said that ASL and other sign languages from other countries are pretty much as different as spoken languages are. However, some romance Latin based languages have significant similarities between them. I wondered if this is the same say between ASL and BSL? I’m learning BSL but it would be nice to know that if I did come across a user of ASL that we could at least communicate a little bit. Have you ever met a foreign sign language user and if you have what was your impression from it? (Sorry, super long explanation 😬)

Hi Cheyenne, I would like to talk to you in life, I did not when I did not communicate with a deaf person, tell me is it difficult to learn sign language? Привет Cheyenne, очень хотел бы пообщаться с тобой в жизни, я не когда не общался с глухим человеком, скажи трудно ли выучить язык жестов?

Hey, just a curious question. I have always wondered why deaf people move there mouth when they speak. I understand that it maybe can help somehow. It is hard for me to understand as a hearing person. Your new hair really fit you btw. :D

I have one question. Why such concern where to belong, the part about which group, mainstream or deaf school? I know nothing about deaf culture, I just love watching your videos so please dont take this the wrong way. It just seems irrelevant to me that she would worry so much about that.

Why not you can write a book story life experience? Hearing and deaf will read it . I learned uncle said mighty 🖊 to writers the author of book. I don’t care mainstream or deaf schools. Of course, May happen bullies both hearing and deaf students.remember that 7 deadly sin common this 🌎. It’s important to be yourself so ambition what you dream to be successful your goal. I did not graduate Gallaudet or college. I fought hearing impacts job to become truck driver for 28 years old. Deafness is a spectrum and hearing aids don't work for everyone. They might make you hear a little bit better, but you might not understand everything or they might not change your hearing at all, so yeah.

i would TOTALLY have wanted to be your friend. in grammar school, i was usually the one who stood up for those being bullied... as i myself was also bullied. then again, it would've been easier to want to be your friend as a kid. as a teenager, thats another story... let me explain. lol And not to sound like a shallow asshole..... but if we were in the same high school, your beauty alone would give me the strength to at least TRY and converse with you - though it'd be twice as intimidating. though say i were to muster the strength to converse with you, i would've found that you're not only gorgeous but really funny!!! i mean, yeah. it would be intimidating to try and have a conversation with you because ASL (at least to me) seems like a really hard language to master. nevertheless, i would try... just given your beauty alone. the minute i found out how awesomely hilarious you were, i would do whatever it took to learn as fast as i could. you're a really interesting woman. it's a shame that gets lost on people who can't even try to find that out.
