Shadow line for the win! I had the same issues with the stock laser on my Dewalt 12" scms years ago. It didn't matter what I did it would not stay calibrated. When I ran across the upgraded led shadow line replacement module, I swapped the laser out and haven't looked back. Dead on accurate.

The shadow line is superior in my opinion specifically because it's always referenced off of the blade. The laser is not. The laser is 100% independent from your blade, leaving space for error. In your line of work, precision is key.

FWIW.. things I learned spraying trim for 1st time. 1). Mask up on to ceiling as shown in this video. Spray bounces up wall higher than you expect. 2). Mask wider than you think. 3). Don't leave painters tape on surfaces for too long. For reasons beyond my control I had to leave tape on for about a month. When I pulled tape, it removed paint and in some cases even tore the drywall paper. Had to scrape all damaged areas, seal torn paper, float the damaged areas, and prime the floated areas with PVA primer. Now putting finish color back on walls - and had to mask baseboards for all of the above.

Richard, I have the 10 in version of the Makita saw (for about 2 yrs). Eventually the swivel, will become difficult turn left and right. When this happens here is how to fix it: There is a center bolt underneath the blue inserts on the cutting bed, remove the inserts and SLIGHTLY loosen the bolts. Loosen until it swings nicely then put the inserts back on and your good.

We do a lot of distress finishing usually brushed on. Satin over the flat base will give you a nice smooth finish that probably won’t need a clear coat If your top coat is flat you may want clear coat on it. Sometimes I’ll use a wax candle and rub it lightly over the base coat and that will make it distress easier and leaves some cool texture. The window looked really cool with the distressed teal. I’m going to check out those pads you used on that window.

The window turned out great. When distressing windows, furniture etc keep this in mind…imagine where the item will naturally get the most wear and distress those areas. This will make the distressing look the most realistic.

Even on my cheap skil 10” miter saw the shadow line is spot on, and that’s the point it always will be as it’s a shadow cast from the blade. The only time it can be an issue is in super bright sun, but then laser can struggle there to. I think some people dislike shadow because you may have to bring the blade down a bit.

The weathered look works better if you use a black gel stain instead of black spray paint. The reason being that the gel stain gets down into the wood, so when you lightly sand off the edges to reveal the weathered look, you aren't left with bare wood (because the black spray paint sands off just as easily as your blue topcoat).

That laser was adjustable for either side of the kerf but you had to be on your toes to sight the thing exactly where you needed the cut. I sold the saw later. Just finished replacing all the Fascia on my house. My Makita compound miter saw (no Laser) and DEWALT heavy duty miter saw stand were life savers. Can't say enough about how nice the Makita is. I wanted to use Mira TEC primed exterior composite (recommended for the Colorado climate) but couldn't find any within 100 miles. Also couldn't find any redwood fascia so I bit my lip and used #2 pine. Picking through a hundred 16 - foot boards to get 30 good ones from three different lumber yards, routing the dado and primer painting them was a pain. And the 1x8 boards are not the same from all manufacturers. Some were 7-1/4 and some were 7 - 3/16. In hindsight, I should have ordered the Mira TEC and had it delivered.

I have the 36v Makita but do not use the laser. I've never owned a saw with the shadow line. I'm not sure if I'd trust either, I like to cut my marks by cutting close and then moving to them. I've been doing this for so many years that I'm just used to it at this point.

Been watching you for years... first time I've heard you say that you were in the Marine Corps. Honestly, not surprised. I like you even more now! Haha!

Ive been using laser since i started. Used hitachis and then the kapex. I cant get the dewalt or milwaukee shadows to work for me as accurately. it seems like the shadow gets bigger as i bring the blade down. Whereas the laser i can line up the edge of the laser to where the edge of the tooth is supposed to land

Shadow line 💯 Laser is fine for rough carpentry but the shadow line is far more precise.

I want to try convert my laser to a shadowline but looks like a mission. Hoping that the laser module of the new xgt saws are interchangeable with the lxt saw.

Have you tried the Bosch or Delta Cruzer? I think they make any sliding tube miter saw seem like it's sliding on sand.

my eyes are not like they use to be so I not only like the shadow line for the more accurate cut line but also for the extra light it gives.
Let's try this again Makita.
