As a Massage Therapist myself, you should have let the front desk know this was your first time and would like to know what type of massage he recommends for back pain. Also, there are some creepy things going on in the Massage place, she is never suppose to move your clothing without permission and you are suppose to be laying down with a towel/sheet over you before she comes in. Shiatsu massage is not a good idea for a first massage, they should have given you options not just say Medium or Hard. WTF? I hope you at least felt better afterwards!

I know you are probably joking, but I have worked in the industry for a long time. 1. Undress to your comfort level. 2. There should be a door. 3. You should be asked light and relaxing or deep tissue. 4. You should also fill out some sort of medical release form. 5. Stretching is normal, but you shouldn’t be in pain. 6. Always be open and honest with your therapist if you are in pain your body needs them to slow down.

Joselyne Pena I am not from the area, but I found this article www.timeout.com/newyork/health-beauty/best-affordable-spa-treatments-in-nyc I would look up reviews for the best massage studios. If there is an elements Massage in the area I would try to find out about them. Be picky on the phone call and let them know exactly what you’re looking for. Maybe even plan a couple weeks in advance to ensure you are getting the best therapist possible. If you hate the Massage stop it you don’t have to sit through a whole Massage if you are not happy or comfortable. Make sure they find the best person for you! And always keep an open line of communication with your Massage therapist. Chances are they can usually use more pressure or less pressure.

As someone that graduated from massage therapy school 9 years ago this story horrifies me. 1. Masseuse is not what a true therapist would ever want to be called. 2. You never go beyond clothing boundaries. Such as your underwear, you dont touch them or move them. 3. The arm behind the back is to help pop up the scapula to get a better massage. Easier and more comfortable than going through the armpit. 4. You NEVER get on the table with the client. Ever. 5. No ceiling and curtains only? Sounds like clinic in class... not a legit massage place (parlour also not a good word to use). 6. Medium or hard???? The correct term would be deep. And where was the S.O.A.P. notes discussion??? I would go again, but to an actual legitimate spa or medical therapy institute. It is soooo difficult to overcome stigmas associated with massage when stories like this come out. There is a reason true therpists want to change the professional name to myofascial bodyworker.

My sister is a massage therapist so I know a bit about the whole massaging experience. From what you described, that place is definitely not providing a legitimate professional service. Pulling down your underwear and massaging your ass is not ethical and is considered a sexual act which isn't allowed by law in a massage spa. These fake massage places could also seriously damage your body if the masseuse is not expertly trained. I would suggest not going there again lol.

That's what i was thinking. I've been massaged by licensed massage therapist (many of my friends are) and THAT did not sound like massage. I know massage can sometimes be slightly painful depending on what's going on with the muscles but damn...punching? Seriously? As a person who is licensed as a massage therapist, this was really hard to listen to. Some points I kinda laughed because of your description, but a deep tissue should NEVER be painful. EVER! On the scale of 1-10 (1 being not enough pressure, 10 being "get the fuck off me!" painful) you should be a 7 which is the "hurts so good". Everyones 7 is different. I seriously can not tell you how many stories like this one I hear on the regular when working with my clients. Hot stones should never be placed on the body if they are that hot. Never be afraid to speak up and say "Hey, that's a little to much pressure, the stones are too hot" or just ask what it is they are doing. I'm so so sorry you had such a shitty experience, Joe. Seriously.

As a Massage Therapist, I have answers. 1) level of undress is completely up to the client. We don’t care either way. 2) super weird that there’s no doors.. 3) it’s not common practice to immediately start beating the shit out of you. 4) you can always tell us what you’re uncomfortable getting worked on. 5) yes, putting your arm behind your back is normal. I use it in my technique depending on needs of who’s on my table. 6) punching is bad technique. That’s odd. 7) no Therapist should just bounce out of the room unannounced. 8) you can always ask questions. 9) we have griddles or towel warmers to heat stones (which I assume they were) 10) god, this lady is terrible 11) punching people is not part of the normal Massage experience. This was highly entertaining, and I hope you decide to give it another shot, somewhere else.

here's a tip for all first time massage receivers: don't go to a random massage parlor ok? google massage therapists in my area or RMT's near me. they are licenced and trained and won't give you any funny business. they are more professional and know how to target specific areas of concern. basically they know what they're doing. you won't have to worry about any weirdness.

If you have an appointment with a Licensed Massage Therapist at a national chain (like Elements Massage, Massage Envy, or Hand and Stone), you are completely fine (I worked at a national chain for over 3 years, you DEFINITELY want to go corporate with massage). I'll copy and paste what I said on another comment here: 1) When you first go in, the receptionist should ask you a few questions - "Is this your first massage?" They will then have you fill out some information regarding your health history, medications, injuries, etc. "What pressure level would you like?" If you do need deep muscle work, ask for a "Swedish Massage." You should NOT get the experience that Joe got. An experienced LMT will not immediate dig into you - they will slowly work through your tissue and muscle layers until your body is ready to have your deep muscles worked. The receptionist will then ask for your gender preference for therapist, if you have one. 2) The therapist should always take you back to the room, have a consultation before the massage on areas to work on, techniques, preferred equipment use, and other expectations going in to the massage. They will then inform you that you may dress down to YOUR comfort level. When they re-enter the room, the should knock first. 3) Your communication with the therapist is KEY. Nothing in a massage should be excruciating. There should only be mild discomfort from tight muscles being stretched and lactic acid build-up being released. If ANYTHING makes you uncomfortable during the massage (equipment too hot, pressure level too high, a particular technique hurts you), you MUST inform the therapist so that they may adjust their techniques to make you feel more comfortable. While massage is not (necessarily) all about relaxation (although it can be), you should be comfortable during the massage. 4) A trained LMT will communicate with you through the WHOLE massage, letting you know of any changes in technique or movements that require your cooperation, and a REALLY good therapist will even tell you WHY they are doing what they are doing (for instance, the arm behind the back maneuver is designed to stretch out the muscles of the shoulder, as well as lift the shoulderblade and expose the deep muscles underneath the shoulderblade, for easier access for the LMT). I urge you to try out a massage. It could change your life for the better. For your first time, DEFINITELY go with a national chain. Maddie had mentioned Massage Envy and Hand and Stone, which are good options. If you have an Elements Massage (sometimes called Elements Therapeutic Massage) in your area, I can highly recommend them, as well. Those are three of the major chains that you are going to find that are highly regulated and will almost guarantee a successful first massage experience. TL;DR - Massage is great! Make an appointment with your local Elements Massage, Massage Envy, or Hand and Stone location today!

It doesnt need to be a national chain! There are plenty of legitimate small practice LMTs. Get their licensing info if youre worried and look them up. Their license is public record. And remember you can end the session at any time if youre uncomfortable!

JayDaPeace I came her to say the same things. I agree with everything you said, aside from the need to go corporate for massage. While it's true going to a private massage therapist takes a little more research, after that there's not much difference. They're regulated by the same laws as a national massage chain. That being said, for a FIRST massage yes, I recommend a chain as well. It's just easier to get used to the massage atmosphere and what you should be expecting from a massage therapist for your first ever massage. Cheers!

Licensed Massage Therapists will go over a medical intake form with you before we even lay a hand on you. I recommend going to a legitimate Spa, doesn’t have to be bougie either so don’t be intimidated. As an LMT I can understand how your first massage can be a little uncomfortable. Good therapists will take care of you. 😊

I believe the arm behind the back thing is to get to different muscles more easily. It's pretty normal to have at least a good part of your butt massaged. That being said they usually ask you about past massages and make you fill out forms at the beginning. Also they should start by rubbing the muscles to loosen them and not just go straight to death punches. Those were probably hot stones or something similar. I don't know how it works in the USA but here there is a certification that some of them get and basically insurance covers massages only by people with that certification. My point is they have to be more trained or whatever so even if you don't have insurance that covers massages it could be worth it to check certifications so hopefully they're less terrifying

That sounds like a great massage except for the punching. I've had a lot of massages and I also like deep tissue or 'hard' massage. I also like the hot stones and I like them pretty hot, however, if they are burning you, you should definitely say something. I think the reason she was going hard on your ass is that they say that it releases tension in your lower back and hips. But yes the way you describe it sounds a little over the top. I've never had someone punching me in my legs, palms or ass during a massage. Sounds like a prank.
