The R^2 value is way too low for it to have any meaning. The best thing you can probably do here is compute the correlation coefficient and check if its positive / negative (looks like it's positive, unfortunately). Finding a fit isn't always the best thing to do, as we can understand things even without it. However, if you really wanted an accurate model, you will have to account for a looooot more variables (of the top of my head : public awareness, bills being passed, deforestation rate, natural disasters, pollution in the rivers, etc...). But at that point you would be mapping variables which have an effect one one population to the global population which isn't that great of an idea in itself. This gets into advanced statistics but you've still done a good job. I am pretty sure that some organizations keep a worldwide tally of endangered species so it shouldn't be too hard to find. It's most likely that Wikipedia has the numbers somewhere.
