This!! People online tried to talk down on me for not having read The catcher in the rye. Its like they forget not every student is from the US? I’m all for reading inclusively but I doubt they read the Poetic Edda or The Emigrants? Doctor Glas, Kallocain or any book from The Copenhagen Trilogy? How about the Summer book or The Ice Palace or The Norrtull Gang? How about some poetry from Edith Södergran? Probably not. Ps I read the catcher in the rye a few years later and didn’t get the hype haha

Agree, Catcher in the Rye was probably earth shaking when it was written (how fast and plain the prose it, comments on society of the time) but now time have changed and many write in that style. 3:45 is really true, I loved reading The Lights of Prague because while it's not an amazing book it does treat the city I live in as it's own character and describes it very vividly. So to walk the same cobblestone streets as the characters is lovely, and you can very easily immerse yourself in the book when you know the places it's describing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Invisible Man. Ignore that fact that it's a "classic" and enjoy the meandering and creative prose, hilarious and harrowing situations, and intense (and sometimes dangerous) absurdity of life our main character goes through. It was my favorite book I read from last year! Extremely relevant even today.
@klarapopilkova5791
@klarapopilkova5791 Жыл бұрын
I mean one reason why classics are classics is that they are still relevant today, 1984 being perfect example. Often it’s not about race, it’s not even mentioned and people just often assume everyone is white because it’s not said. Which is weird to me honestly from the first place - like you are wrong for assuming that in the first place in a way. Jane Eyre too, the race isn’t a relevant topic there so why bring it to it. I know this might hurt some people but to me honestly it really kinda seems like only people from America are making it a big deal, probably because they have most of the issues with it, whereas Europe is mixed throughout and no one really cares if their neighbour has a different color, since they will probably be from a different country lol. I don’t want to sound rude though so if I do, it might be just because English isn’t my first language (as for most Europeans) and maybe some nuances escape me still. 😊

Regarding the Invisible Man: I feel like many people don't realise that the purpose of a canon is to collect pieces of literature, that many people think (!) are valuable for every reader, not to dismiss any person, who has not read one book of this - to be honest - sometimes quite arbitrary list (which also can very much vary from person to person), as "illiterate" or stupid. Using the term "canon" in that way is more ignorant than not reading a book from it in my opinion.

That TikToker doesn't care, they just wanted their 15 seconds of fame by making a callout post on someone famous, and they probably never thought of you again, lol. Your fans know better. I do need to read that book, though, I know it's super important and I just haven't gotten to it yet. Been reading more lighthearted stuff lately, but it's time to plunge into important books again. I do need to get to Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow as well. As someone with chronic illness/disability and a love of video games, I think it's going to hit hard.
