There was one called.. The Feeling I Get When I See You Again. I heard him play it on the radio and I taped it. He was doing a workshop with Eliza Gilkinson at maybe the Edmonton folk fest. He did Deportee better than I've heard it done. He did Snowing on Rutan sp.? a Townes tune. He did Dylan's Red River Shore really good too

So many songs to choose from but I would have to say a few top favorites for me are “Buffalo Return to the plains” “desperate men do desperate things” and “Hideaway Girl”. He also covered songs amazingly in his own interpretations.

Jimmy’s singing voice was out of this world. I wore out his Austin Skyline record and used to see him at La Zona Rosa and other music clubs in Austin. He always had a couple different Dylan songs in his setlist. Thanks for another memorable video!

My boss and a co-worker were tight with Jimmy. She used to book him all the time at the music series she did in Austin. Would love going to see him at La Zona Rosa. Had some nice conversations with Jimmy, such a talented and gracious man. I did media relations for the shows and would get him on morning TV to play in promotion of a show. In fact there was some large show we put on with s bunch of artists. Someone backed out of appearing on one the morning shows we had lined up. So we were scrambling to find somebody who could go on the next morning and almost out of luck Jimmy got back to us and came through. Great guy. RIP Jimmy.

I believe that the first time I saw Jimmy was in the mid-90s on ACL (Lisa Loeb shared the bill). I thought he was a most-unique stylist. Even now, I can't think of anyone to compare him to. In reference to his shyness, in most of the performance video I have seen, he has his eyes closed. I especially appreciate his interpretations of Dylan material. I wonder if the two ever met and especially what Bob thought of Jimmy's covers. I have so many favorites but two of them were actually on that ACL- "What's a Sweetheart like you...." and "Walk away Renee". After I heard Jimmy's version of that one, other artist need not even try because Renee had already walked away. Thank you so much, Otis, for the tribute to one of my favorite song stylist! And thanks again for providing these heartfelt recollections about some of my favorite artists. Tom

I had never heard of Jimmy LaFave until just before his death when a group of musicians on some sidebar on KZbin came up. Jimmy was the lead in, I was blown away. Another group of musicians. Stonehoney was also on that show. I went on to the search bar and looked them both up and together with Red Molly the did a cover of Bob Dylan's "I Shall be Released". I must have watched that a dozen times, how I missed him I do not know except that I worked all the time and spent a bit of time on the road away from home and life got in the way until I retired. Suddenly it came up on the sidebar that he had died, just another one of the great talents I missed as making a living and raising a family and everything that life entails slipped by while I wasn't watching. I have watched a lot of things he did and the "I Shall Be Released" is still at the top although I have only scratched the surface of his work.

I first saw Jimmy almost 30 years ago. My favorite show that I went to was at Poor David’s Pub on Lower Greenville. The Night Tribe band was pretty much the same one that was on the ACL show from 1996. I’m not exaggerating when I say that was a transcendental moment in my life. He and the band went on a spiritual journey and took the whole crowd with them . I literally vibrated with energy the whole night. Probably my favorite song of his is “When it Starts to Rain”. My favorite cover is “Girl From the North Country”. I miss him a ton.

Thank you for your kind words about Jimmy. To hear his music was to fall in love with him. I am grateful I saw him playing at a caffe in Nashville, I was a fan since I bought a CD of him out of curiosity I knew nothing about him. lived in Miami, then like 7 years later I moved to Nashville due to work, as I was visiting caffes and bars on the weekends one day I walked in front of a caffe morning time on west end av but it was closed as I turn to walk away I saw a sign posted on the door it said "Playing tonight Jimmy La Fave" . I was in shock and disbelief. Went home counting the seconds to the opening. That night I went in , was the first one inside and sat on a table in front of the small stage, minutes later he came in and started to play. He sound like he carried a little bit of pain from each and every one on his shoulders because his lyrics tell a story that we have experienced. Never is a Moment is one of my favorites. I still cry on his songs a wound that will never heal. I thank the heavens for letting me see him. Much love Jimmy, much love Nashville.

I saw Jimmy play once only, in Shepherd's Bush, London in around 2015. I had heard his songs because of the Nottingham based promoter Cosmic American who shared a live recording on Facebook of Hideaway Girl before a show at The Maze a few years prior. I almost didn't go to the gig, because I don't know anybody except my dad who would like his music and dad does not live locally. Being in your early 20s in the UK and listening to this kind of music can be a little lonely, so I felt that I wouldn't enjoy the evening all alone. But I did go, and I am so grateful I did. It was revelatory and unforgettable. I told my dad to get tickets as Jimmy was headed north (maybe to Notts or Leicester) to where my parents live and he took my mum and a bunch of friends who loved it and have been big fans since. This was when Jimmy toured with the Eastern European pianist (Radislav?) who was an incredible addition to the band. Anyway I feel incredibly grateful to have seen Jimmy, as the lone 20 something in a crowd of middle aged music lovers. Incidentally, one other time, a few years before, I went alone to another gig. I was nervous about going alone and dissapointed that I hadn't met any like minded music lovers in this, my first year of university. Again, I was unsure if I should go as I didn't really know the artist and I was feeling pretty low and homesick and I thought it might make me feel worse. But I did go, and thoroughly enjoyed an evening with Otis Gibbs (and fifty or so middle aged music lovers)! I reflected on that night when I convinced myself to see Jimmy a few years later. Otis, I will certainly give you some of the credit for compelling me to see this wonderful musician - hope that makes you feel a little less guilty! Anyway. My favourite Jimmy song is his cover of Shelter From the Storm. The version at the end of Austin Skyline is sang with such passion (and I pref it to Dylan!). Thanks for your words and music Otis. Jimmy will be missed.

Hello from Austin. Man, Jimmy LaFave. I saw him so many times here back in the early and mid nineties and onwards. Everywhere from Chicago House over to La Zona Rosa, Symphony Square and up to Hanover’s in Pflugerville even. The only time I ever bothered to try to go see someone on an Austin City Limits taping was when Paul Ray announced on his Twine Time program that if I wanted to see Jimmy to just show up at the KUT studios as they would like to see more people in the audience. I could not believe that this kind of announcement was necessary. Great show as always and when I saw the show on tv later I realized I was sitting behind Jimmy’s parents. I talked to him a couple of times over the years, but didn’t want to take much of his time and he seemed to have a bit on his mind. I was more likely to spend time watching Larry Wilson playing his Strat as I loved his finger picking and spent many Saturday nights watching the Night Tribe at La Zona Rosa when I was wandering the town. Any song off of Austin Skyline is my favorite. I gave a copy to a friend and he was blown away and asked me how do you suppose he does that with his voice and I replied I don’t know and won’t try. I miss seeing him wearing his beret.

I love me some Jimmy Lafave. I only saw him once, at a PBS television series in Waco, TX. Even though Waco is halfway between Austin and Dallas, 100 miles to each, it’s not a big music town. If you don’t have a current top 5 megahit, people won’t buy a ticket, and even then they won’t shut up enough to hear the show. The taping was full that night, but more because of the event than the artist. I surely wasn’t the only audience member that was familiar with him, but there weren’t many of us. After the last song of the taping the band was unplugging, I called out for one of my favorites, “Cafe in the Rain.” Jimmy said sure, they could do that, and they plugged back in to do my request. I honestly think he was pleased that someone there knew his music. I have any number of favorites, “Prayer for You,” “River Road,”. “When the Thought of You Catches Up to Me,”. “Buffalo Return to the Plains,” are only a few. As for the tribute show you mentioned, Jimmy was there but unable to play, and he actually died not weeks later, but only a couple of days. IIRC, the show was on Friday or Saturday night, and I believe he passed on Monday.

I am a huge fan of his version of Shelter from the Storm & in fact never really appreciated Dylan until I had heard Jimmy. I forget the Club on Greenville Ave in Dallas but Jimmy was wrapping up his set and Shelter had not made the cut. I approached the stage and let Jimmy know that it was my Birthday and I would really love to hear it performed if possible. He wanted some verification so after I produced my ID he said, “I have never performed that song with these guys but we will give it a try”. Goose bumps...glad to hear his name today and share that memory,

Jimmy LaFave is at the top of my list of favorite singer songwriters. He had such a unique way of remaking a song his. I rate him right up there with Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, and Jason Isbell. I have so many of his albums and asking a favorite seems unfair as he has so many great songs. Some of my favorites are How It Must Remain, Oklahoma Hills, Only One Angel, Sweetheart Like You, How It Must Remain, On a Bus To St. Cloud, Walk Away Renee, Car Outside, Woody Guthrie, Only One Angel, Never Is a Moment, San Francisco, Red River Shore, and I Shall Be Released. He has such a sweet voice! Unfortunately, I didnt discover him until he had already passed, but have him as my number one Pandora station in my vehicle. Jimmy , Noele Hank and I hopped in his van and traveled to Stillwater to shoot the reunion in about '88. We were shooting at a club on the main street that night, we unloaded our stuff with the help of a young guy dressed all cowboy, he said he was a picker. I asked him if he was going to be part of the show. He told me he wasn't part of that scene, He just worked there. He was the only person I ever met named Garth. he admired Jimmy as a legendary performer, as we all did. We shot him several times. and got drunk as shit playing croquet in Oklahoma. Brother I know exactly what you mean when you talk about not seeing your friend Jimmy before he died. I had a good close friend who was diagnosed with cancer, it I didn’t think it was real bad. He and I talked that we would get together after he went through his treatment when the weather was better. He never told me how bad it was. Then one day about a month later a friend of mine heard he had passed away. I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe it. I called his wife and she confirmed that he had indeed passed away. I felt so very bad I never made it to the side of one of the best friends I ever had in my entire life before he died. I think of him nearly every day, and it still hurts immensely. It is one of my greatest regrets.

I had heard of Jimmy LaFave, but wasn’t familiar with his music. My wife and I went to McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston to catch Radney Foster’s show there and arrived early. It was a split night where Jimmy had the early show and Radney the late show. We enjoyed a couple of drinks out in the garden area but could hear Jimmy loud and clear. My wife asked who it was playing because it was so good, and we decided we needed to see Jimmy when we could. We didn’t get the chance. I guess we need to be more vigilant about having fun, because you just never know.

I did not know who he was, had never heard of him until I was on KZbin and he came up on my side bar. He was with Red Molly and some guys from a band that had disbanded doing a Bob Dylan song "I shall be released". I suddenly realized that this guy was amazing and Red Molly was too. The other band was Stonehoney they were also awesome. I started scrolling through KZbin and found so much of his work. He could take a song and make it his, it was not two weeks later he was gone. There are so many great musicians that we never get introduced to. I worked all my life and much of it away from home 5 days a week that I didn't do much concert going. Now I am too crippled up to go but I was blown away by his ability to put such feeling into a song.

The last time I saw Jimmy perform was at a Guthrie Green Sunday concert. There were maybe a half dozen acts performing, but it was Jimmy I went to see. They announced early in the afternoon that Jimmy had laryngitis and would not be able to sing. Fortunately he still came out and played his set with several guests singing for him. That set was the highlight of a wonderful day. He passed soon after that show. Otis, when you mentioned Oklahoma's reluctance to honor Woodie, it brought back a memory. In the 5th grade (1968) in Tulsa, my public school music teacher started the class with an odd disclaimer. She was being forced by the school board curriculum to teach a Woodie song much against her wishes. I don't remember her exact words but she was visibly angry. Of course after hearing her contempt, I had to find out all I could about Woodie. I've been a lifelong devotee since. By the way the song she was forced to teach was "This Land is Your Land"

I was first turned on to his work by a friend who highly recommended his then current CD "Austin Skyline" which remains my favourite to this day. A great introduction to Jimmy's work though all his CDs are great. It was devastating to learn of his illness and subsequent passing. I had the pleasure of seeing him in person only once at Oran Mohr in Glasgow but it remains a vivid and cherished memory for me. He was taken far, far too soon. Hi Otis, first off I want to say you don’t need to feel guilty about not seeing him before he passed. We all have decisions to make in life, and we must set priorities. Which you did when you made the decision to stay with Amy, hope that’s spelled right? And you carry sooooo much love for this man in your heart, he is with you every step of the way, and will understand what you did, believe me. Secondly thanks again for another great video, I am discovering so many new, to me anyway, artists thanks to your stories. Loved the video on Uncle Seymour, watched the video with Townes singing, and always wondered who the other people were. Anyway, stay safe man, and keep these videos coming, I feel a smile cross my face every time KZbin let me know you’ve posted one. Love from Germany to ya dude ❤️

Jimmy was a master at covering other artists' songs. Three great ones I love are "Catch the Wind", "Let My Love Open the Door" and "It Makes No Difference." His specialty, of course, was Dylan songs. His version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" is one for the ages.

The part of your story about Okemah, Oklahoma reminds me of another town that was xenophobic and wouldn't grant a permit to some promoters who wanted to put on a music festival. They had to find another place to have the concert. That place was the farm of Max Yasgur in Bethel, NY. The concert was called Woodstock even though it was not held there.

I always come back to this video. Otis, the black Taylor Jimmy always played. Do you know what model it was? That guitar always sounded so damn good.

Hi Otis, sometimes it's better to pay your respect when the crowd clears, more intimate that way, so to say.You just invited your many friends to visit his music, which is what friends do.Now your friends will tell their friends which will compound the interest. Hey folks check Otis' "Old Weird America" vids if u havent' yet, they're very Otis-esque. peace

When I first found his stuff I got so hooked I stopped listening to anything else. Probably took a month to regain my senses again. Right now I like River Road but there are so many good ones...

Was looking forward to seeing Jimmy at the 2017 Philadelphia Folk Festival but he sadly didn’t make it. Sam Baker fulfilled the spot for Jimmy but I still feel empty not ever seeing him. Thx for another great video

I'm not 100% sure, but i think i played the festival that year. I remember hanging with Sam baker for a bit at the hotel, but I don't remember what year it was.

Hey Otis! Thank you for this heartfelt post. I learned about Jimmy while writing my music blog. I actually stumbled across him while writing a piece about 'For Everyman' by Jackson Browne. As I listened to you describe Jimmy on a personal level, the connection to 'Everyman' seems even more striking. It shines through in Jimmy's work and it always comes through in your videos. Somehow we are all connected through music if we take time to pay attention. If you don't mind, I will leave another blog here that features 'Shelter from the Storm' by Dylan; another blog where Jimmy came up. It has a link to the 'For Everyman' post. It all speaks to the overall connection. Take care! tedtockscovers.wordpress.com/2020/02/08/shelter-from-the-storm-celebrating-forty-five-years-of-bloodonthetracks-musicislife-tedtockscovers-bobdylan-jimmylafave-tompettyandtheheartbreakers-manfredmann-rodneycrowell-emmylouharris/

Hello again, Otis! Thanks for this episode. Jimmy was also a good friend of mine. I was fortunate enough to video his last show at Threadgill's South. Here's a clip of a song by him. I captured the entire performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqm1qmqJgraaqrM Enjoy!

@@otisgibbs This is the Saturday show you missed. The very last time he played was a couple of weeks later at the Paramount with numerous guest musicians. He had really gone down by then and was in a wheelchair. He could barely sing. Sad beyond words.

@@c.p.vaughn5329 The Paramount gig is the one I missed. I said Saturday, but I honestly don't remember what day of the week it was. I was just trying to show folks that I had a lot of things crammed into a tiny window of a few days. I probably should have looked up the actual date before turning on the camera. : )
