Always a pleasure watching confident skew use. It’s the most versatile turning tool in the shop yet so many fear it or despise it.

I made a tool handle last week and the one thing i struggled with was the centering of the hole for the rod, your approach was brilliant!
@MarklTucson2 күн бұрын
Very efficient approach. Really liked how you were able to re-chuck after attaching the ferrule and have the piece run true even though you were going into a Stebb center.

Nice to imagine this one might be mine. When it arrives, I'll compare the grain to the video.🙂

I've been watching your videos for some time now and like the way you explain things (former teacher here) in a clear and consiese manner. Could you tell me what the finish you used was, I wasn't able to make it out. Keep up the great videos

Have you tried putting the rod into the wood after the ferrel but before you turn it then holding the rod with pin ()pen?) jaws?

Nice job and easy. But how do you make a handle for a tool with a square piece of steel? I have my method, but would be interested to see how you do it. I cut my square handle stock in half and plane the sawn surfaces flat. Then I route half the hole in each half. I make it just loose enough to be able to slide the steel shank into the two halves when held together. I use titebond glue and wax the steel and insert into the two halves and clamp together for good alignment. Before the glue sets, I remove the steel. I make an insert to place into the square hole and do the turning on centers. I Add a ferrule and glue both the ferrule and the steel tool shank into my handle using epoxy glue…after grinding grooves in the shank end. I forgot to mention that these are for carbide tools. You can just drill a round hole which is about the diagonal length of your square tool. Been doing this for years and works great. Don't even need glue with a tight fit. If the edges are very sharp, you can make the hole slightly smaller than the diagonal cause they will generally dig in. Or you can round them off slightly in the section that goes into the handle to make your life easier.

@ … yes, but eventually it will loosen . But I guess we could put and extra amount of epoxy in before pressing the steel tool holder in and it will fill the cavities until it comes out the top that way there would be no possibility of looseness. I may try that on the next tool that I make.

I make handles the same, I would just drill big enough hole that the corners of shank dig in as tool goes in and it grabs so well. You might experiment a bit to see size

Great stuff! As turners, we all make tool handles, so why, oh why, is it impossible to buy tools without??
@stuartgibson2573 күн бұрын
Try Ashley Isles. They sell a lot of their tools with or without handles. Usually around 7 or 8 pounds saving if you buy unhandled.

I do agree Ashley Illes makes some really nice tools and affordable and without handles if you want

My burnisher is quite long. I’ve wondered about cutting it shorter but have no idea of how that might be done.

I don't see benefit of longer rods but again if someone likes it then it's ok. I prefer this size as its easier to control

I'm still disappointed I missed the first runs. I should've ordered, postal strike, or not. Of course, it's over, now. Oh well, I'll be your first order for the third run, if I'm watching for the announcement.
