As a german I feel obligatet to say that during the specific Event today called christmas truce because their were many truces during christmas 1914 but this one is rememberd as a kind of generalisation which is sad. However it was a german soldier that as depicked by sabaton walked out into no mans land and convinced the scottish and english troops to accept this christmas truce the french were not present but are still shown in the sabaton Video to Show that at other parts of the front they participated in it.

They built the trenches as they would have in WWI. The uniforms and weapons are period and representative of the armies involved. The truce happened and was greatly frowned on by the high commands of the armies, and only occurred the one time. They exchanged gifts and foods, played games and tended to the wounded and the dead. Sabaton's drummer Hannes is married to Floor Jensen who sings with the Finnish metal group Nightwish. Her lovely vocals are featured in the end credits. Sabaton does their magic with emphasis on the battles and lesser known histories of conflict. Well worth digging into their playlist. No Bullets Fly, is a great telling of an actual event. As always, watch to the very end.

Dont know if its true but I heard somewhere that for the following years of the war. That some highcommands ordered the artillery units and/or airforce to stand ready in case the front lines showed signs of doing something like this again.

Congratulations on your first Sabaton experience! Yes, nearly all of their songs tell true stories about people or events from history, war related but never in a political way. You should absolutely check out more of them - best way to learn history ever!! Not all videos are on the same level as this one, but the storytelling is always great. If you want to check out more I highly recommend the animated music video for No Bullets Fly (emotional and heartwarming story), Bismarck (pure epic), 1916 (beautiful tribute but definitely heartwrenching), The Last Stand or Soldier of Heaven (just great songs about interesting events). There's also the live version of En Livstid i Krig ("A Lifetime of War") which is sung in their native tongue Swedish but subtitled, which is absolutely fantastic. And one of my personal favourites is The Unkillable Soldier, which has a more comedic twist but still tells a true story. Have fun, and thanks for the reaction! (Also, until very recently, Tommy Johansson who you have reacted to on your channel before, was one of the guitarists for Sabaton. He's the one playing the guitar solo in this video, although they've given him a fake mustasch to hide his baby face. XD)

The song Silent Night/ Stille Nacht was sung from the German trench then picked up by the other side, that is what drew the soldiers out - so I have read. No piano in the trench and probably not a guitar either. The guitar player, I am sure you know very well. He left Sabaton about a year ago and does many covers on his own. Playing all the instruments and doing the vocals. Long blonde hair, many rings, obscenely talented.

There were pianos in WWI trenches. In fact, some small pianos were specifically designed to be put in trenches as they were easier to cart around - but there is a photo, whether staged or not, of a grand piano in a trench. (Probably a baby grand far back behind the lines, if true.)

This song is phenomenal! The story behind it is heart wrenching and the fact that some of those who made it through actually got court-marshalled and punished for these events is the biggest pile of horse manure. Thank you Mel for putting this in front of DJ...he may never be the same again Thank you DJ for this reaction! I'm glad you looked into the history before reacting because, in any other situation it would absolutely 100% sound made up...but truth is stranger than fiction...

Great reaction. One of my favourite parts of this song is how in the first chorus they sing "we ARE all friends" but it the changes to "we WERE all friends" to show (in my opinion) that as the war and the atrocities moved on that something like this probably couldn't have happened again as the other side did become evil and not just people we are friends with, they became people we were friends with and now they are the enemy.

This happened only at a short part f the entire front, but the fact that it happened at all was a miracle by itself. It should also be remembered that the war had been going for only 5 months. While brutal as any war, the worst was yet to come. Sabaton's song "Fields of Verdun" is about the other side of WWI. What I love about Sabaton is that they dig out the forgotten heroes of war, like their songs "The First Soldier", "Lady of the Dark" and "No Bullets Fly". If you react to those, look for the Animated Story Videos of them. Aside from the song they give you the history behind the song.

in a letter a corporal wrorte home escribes just that, a german soldier climbing out of the trenches waving his hat. also yhe football game is mentioned in written sources... they have mashed several minor truces into one, and giving slight leeway for artistic licence everything is historically correct, and yes they had pianos in the trenches, they where often "liberated " from farms/villages... nearby, there is a picture of a grand piano in a bunker so... yeah.

An excellent story from history that beautifully shows that ordinary soldiers are only human. There is also a movie about it called "Merry Christmas", also known as "Joyeux Noel" from 2005. The Christmas truce took place in many places on the front, but in some places the soldiers were dispersed by their own commanders with artillery fire, in other places it ended tragically. There is even a case where soldiers played football against each other. The most famous case of the Christmas truce began with the singing of Christmas carols and the other side joined in. I also recommend the song "No bullets fly" an animated story by Sabaton. Also one of the beautiful examples of humanity in war.

He first appears 3.04 into your reaction with a red/blue military hat and a rifle. 3.15 in, he throws a hand grenade. He is seen many times in the film, but you should watch extra carefully from 13.10. At 13.47 you call him "the man with the guitar" and there you can see his rings on his fingers. I promise you recognize both the man and the rings by now. 😉

For more on Australia's participation in WWI, see Sabaton's song Cliffs Of Gallipolli. This was filmed during COVID times when movie making dried up. Not surprising that a film team that normally does Hollywood was tempted by a job to make an eight minute metal song video. That's why the quality is so good.

There are a lot of "easter eggs" in this song. I mean special things which make this song awasome: 1. "Carol of the bells" 2. Joakim play piano 3. Joakim without sunglasses 4. Band members as soldiers in the different armies. Even names match... Joakim, Pär and Hannes are Germans, Tommy and Chris are British 5. Epic video like a movie 6. Guitar solo on acoustic guitar 7. Floor Jansen (Nightwish) on outro credits - she is Sabaton's drummer's wife (Drummer is Hannes - the blonde guy hurt by granade in the beginning) 8. In the end Pär visited this cross which is located there till today

Yeah, many did in fact not get back to shooting at their newfound friends. Which is why the "higher ups" found various ways to punish them, many of the Germans were sent to the far more vicious Eastern front for example. And the next year, they made damn sure it wouldn't happen again, to a large degree by keeping up constant artillery barrages from behind the lines (also, the war overall had turned far more deadly, so the hostily was more extreme on all sides)

The truce wasn't organized per se. According to some accounts, soldiers from one side went out to retrieve their fallen, then the other side did the same, and they started talking to each other, then started singing carols, exchanging trinkets, and so on. At some point a football game broke out. This took place at several sites up and down the front. Meanwhile, the top brass on both sides were absolutely appalled that their soldiers would even contemplate such a thing, and ordered artillery barrages to be fired every subsequent holiday to prevent a recurrence. The cross depicted in the video actually exists. It stands in a field outside Ypres, Belgium. And it does bear the inscription "Lest We Forget".

Not all soldiers were willing to go back to killing their new friends, so generals had to sometimes move the units to different parts of the front for them to keep fighting. The reason for the high production value is partially COVID-19 - most major movie productions were paused because of the pandemic so the Chezh crews doing sets and special effects had plenty of free time in their calendars for smaller stuff.

The truce was a mostly Anglo vs german event (British and German) but the French and Belgium whom had been invaded were less likely to agree on a truce, but the truce had happened all across the line around the 25th (although there still were fighting) its was a very strong truce by the 26th and after that in some areas generals met at the centre of no man’s land and shot in the air signalling that the wars back on, but in certain areas the truce held until the new year but it was a symptom of a young war and it never happened again. (And sadly little people who celebrated Christmas that day survive the war not Even a year after. Merry Christmas and lest we forget

Australia wasn't involved in WWI? Have you heard of the ANZACs, or campaigns like Gallipoli? As a guy who grew up in NZ, I am appalled at your ignorance. Yes, this was a famous true story. In fact a few years ago the supermarket chain Sainsbury's made a Christmas ad about this incident. It horrified Generals on both sides (who took draconian steps to prevent any repeat of of the incident) It was a perfect story for Sabaton, who are history nerds/metalheads who celebrate heroism but take no sides and have no nationalistic agenda. The Valkyrie Goddess herself, Floor Jansen, sings the outro (she is married to Hannes.)

The cross is there to symbolize the fact that during the real truce they also buried bodies that were left on the no man's land, because it was not possible without the truce. They just didn't want to focus on the dead on the video that much, so they just showed a cross raised in their memory.

Not sure about the piano - those things are effing HEAVY. My buddy and I recently moved an old piano out of his house and even though we'd pretty much dis-assembled it, even the pieces were crazy. They've got a great big metal harp-shape inside where the strings are, because the strings are always under tension. **ahem** Right, I'll quit nerding out about that (it was so fascinating, though!). Well, with Sabaton you learn history in a very special way. Sabaton doesn't must do Metal. Not Power Metal or Industrial Metal or whatever. They do historical metal. They sing about events, situations, battles that happened throughout history. And not in a propagandist way, they do it unfiltered. Raw, showing all sides as they truly were. The Christmas Truce really happened in some areas of the 1914' trenches. Not everywhere, and afterwards many of the participants were subjected to draconic punishments for not fighting the enemy. And not everywhere when a person got out from a trench and approached the enemy line with raised hands to talk were they greeted in kind, but with bullets. And yes, the worst part of this is the fact that every single of of these soldiers drank, sang and played with people they shot ad a day or even a few hours prior, and knew fully well that not 24 hours later, they would have to shoot these people again. That's what the cutbacks and gunfire sounds interspersed meant. They knew they were getting to know people they were likely going to kill soon. That torment upon a persons soul is so terrifying.

First, great reaction, more Sabaton please. to ve honest, Some Sabaton videos have more storytelling and depth than some full sized Holywood productions Sabaton is a Swedish band with a loooong list of history based music. Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 120 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) . Sabaton videos often have dedications and/or messages at the end, perhaps not always but... watching to the very end is frequently well worth it. Animated STORY videos (short Animated history lessons with music videos in them) No bullets fly, enemy showing mercy to injured aircrew in a nearly wrecked aircraft barely still flying, even escorting them to safety. Night witches, Young (17-28) female bomber pilots in ww2 fighting the Nazi despite the discrimination they faced and being given obsolete equipment, aircraft ... Lady of the dark, female fighting alongside men during ww1 and being highly respected and even more decorated. Red baron, the famous fighter pilot of ww1 first soldier, unlikely French hero in ww1. Epic ORIGINAL videos. Bismark, about the sinking of the ship Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914 40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939 (with odds actually close to 55:1 they held for 3 DAYS when ammunition and supplies ran out. Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944. To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face. Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there. Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge Live performances 40:1 from poland Uprising from poland En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war. Two covers that are good Defence of Moscow, self explained 1916 about the devastating battle of the somme in ww1, casualties topped 1 milion if you count both sides, all for 6 miles of ground, these are just some, there are plenty more.

Sabaton also do a sister channel called Sabaton History, where they dive into the stories behind their songs which are mostly based on real life events. Sabaton have also partnered with Yarnhub (a KZbin animation studio) to make alternative animated offical song video's which also go into the story behind the song a bit more than the song does. Edit: The Crimbo Truce only happened the first Crimbo of WW1, the general's & politicians on both sides were not happy and forbade it from happening again.

Excellent reaction to this epic song, but you should have played it all the way to the end! Sabaton put it there for a reason. You should check out their cover of 1916 and any of their other original songs.

Yarn Hub did a video on this. The men where told the war would over by Christmas at this point. The Pope went as far as to request those in command to allow the troops a temporary peace at Christmas. Many where tranfered to other parts of the front because they refused to fight each other. Hitler was allegedly here for the Truce and was not a fan of it.

After this happened the Russians tried to start a truce on the eastern front on Easter. The issue is Easter isn't at the same time in the Russian and the German calendars so it never happened.😢

If you want an awesome live song with sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg. The albums Carolus Rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding. The album was released with both an Swedish and English version, the differnce being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldier's view while the English is more from an outsider's view of the war. It is the Swedish version the played at that show so be sure the subtitles are on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

Very good reaction and welcome to the world of military history taught by metal music 😊 Sabaton is a Swedish that makes music about war and soldiers from all over the world, without taking sides. They celebrate the bravery and sacrifices of any soldiers, having the phrase ‘lest we forget.’ (More) As an Aussie, you'll want to hear Cliffs Of Gallipoli kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYCmlmWPbM6JfJo The Ballad Of Bull kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5CsnWmkoMR2l7M But besides those, here's a small list of songs to react to, if you want. There're many others and I'm sure others will suggest them. 1916 (Motorhead cover) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiqmZukhqdkndk Night Witches (Animated story) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4qzoGuwedCpr5Y Lady of the Dark (Animated) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXLWg5mZp7-Yi6c Soldier of Heaven kzbin.info/www/bejne/goqsZJibnK59oqs The Red Baron kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqLIcoWneKZ-aMk En Livstid i Krig (Turn CC on) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXPWZHpnhdusnK8 No bullets Fly (Animated story) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqTPgGBpfMyYpLs

1:32 Australia wasn't involved? What? What do you think Anzac Day is about then? It's the remembrance of all the Aussie and Kiwi boys who died in the Great War (and I presume nowadays who have died in war, period? Though I am not certain about that. Anyhow, Australia was most certainly involved in the Great War 11:52 well, that happened in the Canadian sectors. They didn't feel like celebrating Christmas with the Germans and apparently preferred finding more shit to put in the Geneva Suggestions There is a 2019 short film, "Christmas Truce - 1914". Also a 2005 one, "Joyeux Noel". Both are depictions of the Christmas Truces. The 2005 one is on KZbin
