I appreciate that you mentioned the battery issue with the Molus fixtures, seemingly the universally acknowledged flaw. I like the idea of these punchy little guys so much and want Zhiyun to succeed with rectifying the battery issue. Re the vid, it’s really enjoyable to see other folks’ approach on going light. My light version still includes Litemats, or at least a hard 1x1’ and array of 6x6’ rags, lol, so I’m finding your forays inspiring. I’d like to grab a couple of the Moluses to skip and bounce around. Thanks!
@dermdoclaura9 ай бұрын
We had the same issue with our battery. First one fried our electronics when we plugged it in for recharging. Anything on that powerbar was fried. Second one fried the X100 flash and it wouldn't show anything on the LED light. Their batteries have a problem with managing the output voltage. Everyone who uses the X100 ends up abandoning the battery.

My battery grip died recently as well (turned off and wouldn’t charge again). Went through the warranty process and the company that organised the replacement mentioned Zhiyun have changed their battery with a modified board so there shouldn’t be any more issues. I've been thinking about this myself today and this video popped up, handy! One thing I was thinking of trying out is just packing bounce/silk/neg fabric with eyelets, and a length of cord. If you can find somewhere in the room to tie the cord to (or tie to one of those clamps), you could feasibly string up a pretty large bounce or silk with no stands at all, and that set up would take up even less bag space than the reflectors. It's not good for every location, but I gaffed some scenes in a building with a suspended ceiling the other month, and I ended up clamping a load of neg directly to the frame, and It would have been even easier if the fabric had eyelets and I had some cord.

The beauty of lights like this is not deliberating on but instead bringing a light. It's so tiny that it's a no-brainer. I entertained this exact kit when I considered the Zhiyn lights for travel setups. However, I ended up buying lights from iFootage. They are still small but a little bigger. Have you seen the Halo diffuser from Manfrotto?

Exactly. There have been one or two jobs that I didn't think I had a Zhiyun with me, but there it was, tucked into the bag and became useful because I just always leave it in there. I have NOT seen the halo diffuser. I'll check it out.

Love these little Zhiyun lights too! I also shoot Canon C70 and R5C and travel a bit. What checked bags are you using to accommodate the taller stands and parabolic type softboxes? I've been using a regular Samsonite suitcase along with clothing but it's not quite tall enough for 30-35" long items like a softbox.

Honestly, my checked bag is just a large, semi-soft sided TravelPro suitcase. It fits all three of the light stands I mentioned in the video just fine. I check them with my tripod and lots of clothes for padding - haha.

Great tips, Curren. Thank you! If you have any tips on shooting two-camera interviews by yourself, I'd love to hear em. I'm traveling with an FX6, FX3 and drone for storytelling and quite often am traveling / filming solo. BTW, I was born in Huntington, W. Va.
@CurrenSheldon5 ай бұрын
Hey fellow West Virginian! I've shot a few two-camera interviews by myself, but it's not super easy if you are also doing the interview. But, if there is someone else doing the interview, then I like to use a wider angle on my A-Cam to give myself a bit more leeway in terms of depth of field, and then focus on keeping the tighter B-Cam in focus. Those are also the situations I rely on good autofocus cameras, which the Sonys are. I know Canon has a "Face-Only" function that is incredible for solo shooting - does Sony have that as well?
@Snider-Films5 ай бұрын
@@CurrenSheldon West Virginian's rock! Thx, Curren. Yes, Sony's autofocus has a Face Priority feature that works great and really helps nail focus on both cameras. And I agree the struggle is real to shoot a two-cam interview by yourself. Not ideal, but it's simply a reality for me right now. I just got back from Montreal and shot a two-camera interview by myself with the FX6/FX3 combo and Sigma 24mm and 85mm F1.8 prime lenses and it worked great. For the profile angle, I left the 85mm a bit wider to allow cropping in post and made sure the Sony autofocus had locked on to the eyes of my subject. I'm headed to Tennessee this week and I'll also be adding the use of the Sony Monitor and Control app to be able to view and control the 2nd camera from an iOS device mounted with a magic arm to the tripod I sit next to as the interviewer. Thx again!

thanks for video, interesting to see your kit, and how you pack. Right now I use amaran 200w lights as travel lights, but I put them in large wheeled carry on luggage from Target in their box, and can fit two and light stands -- very easy. Mini softboxes in my carry on luggage (a small sport duffel), along with tripods. Been eyeing those 200 w zhiyun lights though, would love to have something that compact -- but they came out like right after I bought my 2nd amaran. Curious about one thing you mentioned though. Thanks for the cool video. The impact telescoping arm has a 3/8 unthreaded head. What are you using to convert it to something a boom mic will attach to? I really appreciate it.
@CurrenSheldonАй бұрын
I am using a standard pistol grip (I believe rycote) and then just sliding it into the non-threaded section. Usually it balances pretty well if I can keep it level, but I'll often secure it with gaff tape or zip ties, just to be sure. Not scientific, but hoping they can get a thread on that boom arm sometime soon.

Such a weird choice to develop their own battery to this light. Just have a v mount connector and we could run it all day

You can still run the lights off of USB-C, so you could snag a V-Mount or two that has USB PD (like Smallrig or FX Lions). The nice thing about their own battery is it fits seamlessly into the side and acts as an extension of the light itself as a handle. Pretty sleek.
