Cool now we have results on PCIe 2.0 and 3.0. Good video

It's also easy to run out of available PCIe lanes. My adapter was running slower than expected until I realized it was only using 2 lanes. My graphics card was only 8 lanes so I bifurcated the PCIe bus to 8x4x4 and have plenty of lanes now.

How'd you do that if I may ask?
@45KevinR2 күн бұрын
Well done for the retest. Those speeds are nicely mid range according to the Passmark article I linked in the last video. So it's good to see that these super cheap adapters aren't adding any extra limits to the pcie/nvme pathway. Well done for reminding people that not all slots are equal, or even the same generation. I read recently that there can also be bridge/buffer/latency differences, so it's probable to see speed differences between motherboard models, chipsets and even slots that are identical versions.

Thanks! Yeah I figured it would be a good idea to show. Also, I wan't even sure since I couldn't find much info on this board (I believe it's from a Medion pre-build). The Intel H110 specs state PCIe 2.0 but I read somewhere else that this board does 3.0 so I took the gamble. I do see that other boards with this chipset also have one 3.0 slot and some 2.0 slots so I guess it's bound to that.

I was wondering after your last video. The speeds didn't make sense. So good that you have this update. Also, when buying adapters like these it's important to read the documentation of your motherboard. What speeds the slots are and stuff. In many cases slots share bandwith with other slots, so if you use more than one of them a x4 slot may switch over to x1. Also, seen some motherboards with x4 slots share power with the lower M.2 slot. So if you occupied that M.2 slot the pcie x4 slot would be disabled. I have a couple of x4 M.2 adapters, and I made sure to read the documentation of each of my motherboards before I bought them. As an example, in my B550 board the x4 slot (full length x16, but uses only x4) shares bandwith with two x1 slots. So if I occupied any of those two x1 slots the x4 slot would also run at x1. Now, it's running x4 pcie 3.0. Giving me over 3GB/sec. On my other PC, which has a more modern motherboard there are two x4 (full length x16, but only using x4) slots that shares bandwith. So if I used more than one of them they will switch over to x1. However, since it's a more modern B760 Intel motherboard I get pcie gen.4 on those slots.

You're right, but for some boards info is hard to find. The one I got to make this video with comes from a pre-build and this doesn't have any documentation other than a small bit of info on a community site.

As long as you have a CH341a programmer (or similar), you should be okay with modding UEFIs from that time period. I use one of these PCIe NVMe adapters on an Ivy Bridge OptiPlex, and adding the NVMe module to the UEFI enabled me to boot from the NVMe drive.

Richt, no I don't have one. Might be interesting to get one indeed. When I worked at the computer shop (decades ago) we just picked another board of the same model of the shelf to fix bricked boards. Booted the working one, pulled out the cmos chip while running and put the bad one in to reflash it. :) That's not an option in my attic room haha

If you use 2.0 PCIe ports, then will that bandwidth be taken away from the overall system. Does your setup go through the chipset ? Anomalies that developed though your boot process in this video should be discussed further, as I believe would add more value and to future video's.
@ex-itguyКүн бұрын
Anomalies like turning off without a boot device? I guess that's just a weird thing about this board, not really worth digging into. The slow speed the first time... I have no idea. I tried several times but it didn't go well until I put the card in my old test system again.

Ah yeah. Not sure how that happened. As you might have seen, the mouse/framerate stuttered severely as well, but that could have been caused by my capture unit (Magewell DVI+). Looks like I shall be changing my mind and buying an adaptor for my older PC, so that I can run it with an NVMe M.2 SSD.
@JeremyLeePotocki2 күн бұрын
Yeah those M.2 to PCI-E X1 adapters are only good for PCI-E 4.0 ports. On 3.0 port it's fastest speeds will only be 1GBps at best (even still 800~850MBps is normal). With a 4.0 port it's double that top speed (2GBps). I have to tell people this a lot especially those that want to upgrade their SSD on older hardware to not waste their money buying a gen 4/5 NVME SSD when their motherboard only has Gen 3 ports (like the Steam Deck) your paying all that extra money for zero gains due to hardware limitations. I got a X1 NVME adapter, but since I only got a X1 3.0 slot available on my motherboard. I just bought for it a ultra cheap Low Powered Gen 3 NVME with a max speed of 1.8GBps read/write speed for storing media backup files (they don't need to ultra speed anyway). That leaves the other M.2 SSDs for stuff that really need the speed.
@ex-itguy2 күн бұрын
Yeah on 3.0 the X1 isn't really worth it. Maybe to get rid of a few cables, not really for speed.
