i think when you're dj the first thing you should buy is a car. cause you mix at night and bus ends at 8 pm in lot of places. plus, if you're too tired to go back home or drive, you can sleep in your car.

There isn't good profit margins or potential to grow your business in Djing. You forgot to mention the yearly expenses: equipment insurance, PLI insurance, record pools, transportation, marketing budget. There's a lot more to it. The average person here in England doesn't really know what a DJ is, which is why they think they can get one for £150 and less. Most DJs of today don't know how to deliver a premium service, which is what messes up the market.

Indeed, not forgetting the cost of cables, headphones, maybe microphone if you use one, software if your decks don't come with it, protective equipment bags or cases, some spares in case something fails and you need it for a following gig (light units, stands, cables, speakers). The cost of running the business will also include taxes (+ maybe someone to help you with that) and additional duplicate costs for extra staff and potentially branded shirts and additional signed vans to send them out with.

Cracking Video Phil again. i remember doing the same as this when i started out mobile work. while i was watching your video tho it did dawn on me that there are many DJ Equipment shops out there these days that sell packages like your describing with 0% finnance if someone is looking for an easier option. Obviously its not the best way to go as you'll be in debt but if you know you have the work then it can be paid off earlier and increase your credit rating too.

I dont know why you reminded me of my son as you leaned your head against the canvas to read your light brand lol. He loves my DJ equipment, hes 4... so watching a grown man be as inquisitive as my son is quite a joy... also great video!! Ive been wondering what I should do to make my dj set up better... forget the trusses though. Those are not good. Most lights can fit on collapsable tripods with attached platforms.

Oh I love the cost segment. I have spent about 4500 USD on equipment since beginning DJing over 2 years including replaced equipment... ive made about 65k in that same 2 years off of djing alone.

I made a really nice deal, 2 old 12" reloop speakers for 60€ and a Reloop Dominanz 702 for 80€ so I have nearly a complete PA system for under a 200 buck's

Yes, true but 10 gigs at say 200€ would yield 2000€ to go towards an upgrade. 2nd user gear is a good way to start for a new DJ.

I spent just £1300 on similar setup, plus laptop which was probably less than £500 (who would buy mac for 1500 for a start? You can have 3 as fast machines for that).

Bro first of all, cool video. But I want to add one thing: there are companies just renting all theese stuff. So you have to just learn how to set up a pro setup and work togheter with a small renting company and just rent their stuff. Thats a way, how someone can be a wedding dj with way less investment.

Thanks Phil. Another great video. It's really helpful. I'm 37yrs old and want to get into djing to earn a little extra pocket money. What is like to know is how you would compile a wedding set and play those classic tunes which seem harder to beatmatch etc? I have learnt the basic' s with edm, but how would you play something from the 70's or 80's and make it sound good consider the bmp is all over the place

My thoughts are that it may seem super difficult, but there are always tricks that you can use like finding any part of the song where the beat seems to drop off, and use LPF and down volume slider at the same time to fade that song out. and then start a beat or chorus of another song on the other deck at close to full volume.. practicing this technique can let you determine the best timing and volume. Theres also ways to start fading out a song while fading in another song at the same time using the high mid and low knobs of both channels. this way you can remove most or all of the frequency of one song while bringing in that same frequency of another song in the other channel. also I pretty much always use master tempo or keylock in serato for most songs if i want to keep the same melody as the original no matter the tempo i play the song at.

Gotta remember Ben mixing music from 70s and 80s is like building a house on quick sand... the trouble is the b.p.ms keep moving up and down.. drifting all over the place. Unless your naturally gifted I'd concentrate on chop mixing. This with the right tunes can be devastating effect... or just mix the first 2 bars.. (8 beats) then get out.. nothing worse than a train wreck

Nice gear Phil! I have practically the basic gear for mobile DJing. I have two 15" 2-way cabs (speakers), speaker stands, three 18" subwoofers, a DDJ-SX3, an Acer gaming laptop, and two Gigbars version 2. I have a basic 4 foot table with a skrim to cover it and a facade for the front. I'd like to upgrade to a booth similar to yours someday. To haul it all, I have a Ram 3500 pickup truck.

Hey mate, Insurance is very reasonable from Mobile DJ Network. also I use (Amongst a couple others) www.Promoonly.co.uk all up to date and fully licenced. When getting music, check what the law is in your country with regards licencing.

I have 2 Rockville BPA15s 800 watts on both of them equaling 1600 watts and soon getting a Rockville RBG18S 2000 watt 18 inch subwoofer and I have a Numark NVii and a Peavey PV10AT Audio Mixer. And a microphone with a 20 or 30 foot cable. (Like 3 of the cables. 2 for the 2 speakers and 1 for mic. 2 or 3 Birthday Party gigs. Soon going to a 18+ club to DJ at and also at a music festival called " Cherry Festival " I always go every time. It's fun and crazy! :P also great Info /helpful vid Phill! (I'm in Michigan, USA)

This was EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you. The rates you cited for weddings seemed very low to me. I hired a DJ for my wedding 19 years ago and they charged $700 US dollars, which is about 550 pounds, I believe. I would expect after 19 years that the rate would have gone up. Is there a difference in the cost of DJs in the UK vs US? Also, while you talked about the cost of your equipment, what did you spend on your music collection to support your DJ'ing business? From your perspective, how big of a collection do you need? Thanks again!

that is interesting. You might live in a more expensive part of the world than me, or perhaps I am not charging enough. It is difficult to say how much I have spent on my music. I would say, you need all the classic “wedding music” there are hundreds of Spotify playlist you can look at for that. The other great thing about the world we live in is that you can download music in the spot. As you do more and more gigs, your collections will grow and you will loose track of how much you have spent.

@@CalicoCooperFan I'm in the UK, and it is pretty low. From my experience 8-11 years of djing, the market here is small and localised. If there's anywhere the event organizer can save money, it seems to be with the DJ. Everyone and there uncle is a "DJ" and will offer their services for next to nothing to help the person out. I may look to get back into the business, but I need to make sure I have a backlog of SERIOUS clients.
