My MODX electric piano fix | montage motif yamaha | my patches

I've always disliked how the electric pianos 'explode' when you exceed a certain velocity. This is how I adjust most electric pianos so the 'hard' sound comes in more gradually as you play harder on the keyboard. I played a fender rhodes for years in a band so I am sensitive to this issue.

Back up your MODX first. You can load my Performances in to your MODX. These are pretty basic patches. They are mostly layers and splits. Download the file to a flash drive and load it as a library file and anything you have previously saved on your keyboard should remain. BUT please do a back-up first, to be safe. Timbre change is part of the charm of the electric piano sound for me. I love the somewhat unpredictable sprinkling in the mid range both playing and listening. Of course too big of a jump is a problem. And I respect the opinion of those who don't. Still and interesting video. Thanks for doing it.

Just bought the Modx8 with hopes of loading my S90 performance patches only to find that I can't do that and the EP sounds although have the same name in both, sound much thinner on the Modx. Are they sampled differently from S90 to Modx? The auditions sound closer to the S90 thickness but patches sound very different from auditions. Am I trying to squeeze old tecnology out of a newer (supposedly better one) ? thx

This is an issue since I played my first digital piano and synth wih Rhodes samples. Very unpleasant. My personal view ist that the Rhodes has not only a big volume range but also changes its overtone structure more than an acustic piano. More and finely graded multisamples would be a good solution, but this costs lot of memory. The use of velocity layer blending functions, on the other hand, causes some loss of authenticity when you listen closely. That may not be important when playing live and loud on stage, but it is audible and perceptible in recording situations. Every time we have a multisample with few velocity layers this issue occurs. For example the S700 sample in MODX that came with an additional free library from Yamaha. (also Montage or Motif). It may be a better solution to use the same sample as another element for another velocity range with different filter settings than to use a big velocity range with continuous filter settings and extensive sample blending. Listen to the S700 patch I demonstrated on my channel with MODX performances: MODX Pianos kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV6YqZ2MiMl4hpY Just 3 velocity layers! But I like the S700 sound very much. Is there s practical solution for Rhodes sounds as well? I think so, and I put together some convincing Rhodes surrogates for the MODX. I did not save them on Soundmondo because most of the users seem to be satisfied with the MODX presets. But let me think it over …

Great stuff as always. Thanks. Have you found that the “action”is kind of slow on piano sounds on the modx? Another wards, compared to a real piano it feels like the response is just not as satisfactory. Any ideas? Or perhaps piano sample libraries that are better in that regard? Thx.

Yes, I had a hard time playing Dancing Queen because you need to double strike some octaves and my acoustic piano technique didn't work. I ended up playing it a bit to slow just to get the notes out.

I don't think a different library would work any better. It's not a 'top of the line' action.
