@@wandameadows5736 Words can change lives. Words can end lives. People seem to forget that words ARE indeed actions in themselves as speaking is an act. But petty insults that hold no genuine vitriol behind them like here? Yeah, who cares, honestly. Here they were one of the ways in which the protagonist attempted to hold people at arm's length it is relevant to the story and character but not as a judgment of his morality. I also read a study once that concluded that people who curse are usually more honest as their filter between brain and speaking apparatus is not as... thick as that of people who do not curse.

Late but not too late, Mr. Kowalski realizes that he has completely misjudged his neighbors. The two young people represent the absolute opposite of the descendants of his own family. Helpful, interested in him as a person, concern for his well-being is not faked and much more. Do you become his friends? They are actually like his own children and he is infinitely proud of them. The neighbors have cracked his hard shell. The only chance he has to prevent a catastrophe is to sacrifice himself. If you do this, it must be worth it and you have met exactly the people who deserve it. For a former soldier, all of this is much better than waiting to die while dying of cancer. One last fight. His last sign is his will, which cannot be surpassed in terms of clarity. Car and dog for the one he is so proud of. A masterpiece.

The character of Walt Kowalski reminds me of my own Dad. He was hard because life was hard. He spoke his mind, as an honest man should, because he was an honest man. He could read the character of anyone you put in front of him, because he had been around a lot of people. We didn't always get along, because we were more alike than we were willing to admit. It's always easier to see your own faults and weaknesses in those you love than it is to find the virtues and graces you most admire. I used to think one of us was a damned fool. I realize now it was me.

Regarding the interaction between men (barber shop scene): In rural Michigan (hello!), at least where I'm from, a good ribbing is basically part of our culture. We'll cut your grass, work on your house, or move your furniture in a heartbeat--all for no compensation because we love our neighbors--but we'll cuss the hell out of you in the process. All in good fun. My best friends have probably called me "jackass", "asshole", "cocky bastard", "piece of shit", etc., more than they've called me by my own name. And I've done the same to them. This movie isn't rural-based, but that interaction has always made complete sense to me. None of it is serious. Even the barber pulling a gun out. It just demonstrates the close-knit relationships you find in such a community. "I'm gonna drop everything to help you out, but I might bitch you out with a smirk on my face." just means "I love you." What's even better: it's how women talk too. Equality :)

I grew up watching Eastwood, going as far back as the 70's, then eventually got into his even earlier stuff. Anything he does never surprises me. The fact we wind up rooting for him, even as prejudiced as he was, which is mostly due to what he went through, we wind up rooting for him, which is one of the most impressive turnarounds I've seen in a movie. Good editing on this one. I bet that wasn't too easy. lol

IIRC, the scene where Walt kicks the gang member on the lawn is one of the first times he ever says "Thao" instead of "Toad". Some of my fellow Eastwood fans call that scene after he finally pulls the gun out in it as the 'sequel' to the "Do ya feel lucky, punk?" in "Dirty Harry".

It's a misconception that Walt was being racist. You'll note that he holds everyone to the same standards. He also uses the same sort of language with everyone. With Hmong neighbors, he didn't respect them, because they let their homes get run down. That in conjunction with odd rituals in the backyard, gave the impression that they weren't civilized. The gang activity didn't help with that, either. Most of the neighbors didn't speak English, making communication near impossible. However, when Sue dished back what he was dishing out, refusing to be offended, and did so in a sweet way, she earned his respect. Toad initially earned Walts respect, when he helped the lady who dropped her groceries. When Sue sweet talked him into coming over to eat (something that he'd never have done, were he an actual racist) he observed many basic values that HE held. He found the common ground, because he was finally able to communicate with them. And, he instantly respected the culture. When he mispronounced names, and used slurs, it was terms of endearment, just like with his barber buddy and contractor buddy. And, similar to his relationship with the Priest; he respected that the Priest was insistent on honoring the commitment made to Mrs. Kowalski. Contrast that with how he felt about thugs. The Hmong thugs, the Black thugs; a thug was a thug. It wasn't their skin color that he detested, it was their despicable behavior. He detestes the character played by his son, because that guy should have been more willing to protect Sue. Walt was old school.

The vice-grips/duct-tape/WD40 thing ... there are only 2 consumable products and one tool that most people will ever need, if something is moving but it shouldn't then you use duct tape, if something should move and it doesn't then you use WD40 - the vice grips are to hold things in place while you are taping them or to wiggle the joint free once the spray has penetrated.

My father (a Vietnam Veteran) spent most of his life exactly like Walt at the beginning of the movie. Towards the end of his life I think he had the revelation that we're all born into frailty and eventually death, and he softened up quite a bit. Many Asian cultures prohibit touching someone on the head. Another "Don't Do" in Thailand is point your toes at someone. 5. My surrogate father had that collection of tools. 😎 He didn't have all the tools in the world. Just the ones he needed. 6. Guys don't normally talk to each other like that unless they're very close (or drunk)🙄 7. Walt does have a death wish. He's sick and going to die anyway. I don't know wether u and ur mother have watched the movie Bridges of Madison County starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep but its a absolutely beautiful movie which I think you will love especially your mother. Its produced & directed by Clint Eastwood. It's such a beautiful movie and one of my favourites with two of the best actors in Hollywood.

@@Jen-Mom so glad u have seen it as so many haven't considering it's stars two such beloved actors. I read the book and the film adaptation is absolutely perfect which doesn't happen that often as they usually change so much but this wasn't the case. I recommend it to any Clinty fan as its so far removed from his usual badass roles.
