Nothing worse than making an hour and fifteen minute drive to get an okd school expert to align my car only to have it not start. But I overcame and its done now.

I ran a ground strap from the control box to the engine block on my Newport. Fixed my intermittent "no start" issue. Make sure you have removed the paint on the firewall and the box. Good luck. My Duster needs alignment. I used to do front end work. I trust myself, but now rely on others. You nailed yours pretty well!

Thanks Terry. So far the car has been firing every time. MoparNut 62 was telling me to run a ground wire like you.
@moparnut62862 жыл бұрын
All I got to say is you know when you start the car the starter relay switches the power to by pass the resistor to provide full battery voltage then in run it goes back resistor voltage! and you know how I feel about alignment! lol.. and ground ground ground braided ground straight to box!!

Lol. A back up ground wire huh? Okay, I’m putting that on my list.

When I built a 406 for my Nova, I decided to try a different distributor, and went with a Mallory Unilite. At least 3 to 4 hours couldn't get it started. No fusuble links or resistors in-line. Turned of the holley red fuel pump while trying to start it....nothing. It came down to getting a solid 12 volts from the battery. Even the starter took enough power to not let the distributor fire. If I had a points/condenser distributor, it would have fired right up even with 10-11 volts.
@JonnyMopar2 жыл бұрын
Did you ever get it to run? I tried a hot wire to the dist, 12 volts and still no spark. When it wasn’t firing anyway.
@TargaWheels2 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyMopar it started. Just had to hook up the battery charger for starter assist.

Check the gap in your distributor!!!! I spent a lot of money. It would run awesome. Then not… the gap was .012 put it down to .008 and she run amazing since

It ended up being the ground to the Orange box. At least I think, cause it hasn’t done it since.

You nailed your steering issue if your running bias ply on the front. Your body role will be very bad. If you have zero camber it will be bad for road driving too, you need some steering projection. My credentials- Journeyman heavy duty and Journeyman automotive with 20 years of experience. Hate when people put comments without experience.

Thanks Hemi Orange. I’m anxious to get the radials. I don’t dare go fast in a corner in this car right now. I think the radials are gonna make it feel like I’m not putting my life in danger when I drive it. We’ll see how it feels once I get those. I’m not too worried about road driving. It has a 440 and 4.10 gears. Mileage is horrible. So roads trips are kinda off the table for this car.
@HemiOrange2 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyMopar Radials are the way to go for sure. I used to run a bias ply slick for racing but the tire technology has come so far that is not worth it other than if you want to race or run old-school. I ran Micky Tompson ET street radials on my Hellcat and had no issues hooking up. My local track outside of Edmonton is shit too (Castrol).

Check your starter/solenoid and S terminal. If its intermittent I would go to the harness. Could be that ground too. I've spent hours doing no start diagnostics and 90% of the time it's something stupid. Usually it's something basic.
@JonnyMopar2 жыл бұрын
It would turn over fine. So it’s not the solenoid. It wasn’t getting spark. I think you’re right, it’s something stupid and simple. I’m convinced at the moment it was the ground on the Orange box.

@@JonnyMopar I think your right. Keep in mind though that electrical components are the most untrustworthy parts on a car. I've seen brand new coils and modules that were bad right out of the box. In the video there was no hesitation at all and it sounds like your carb is set and your timing is good. I like your box you put together, I used to run the same thing when I had my vettes and I was doing car shows and racing.

I always take a bit of paint off the back of the control box and the body and use a little di electric greae to ensure a solid ground.. battled with problems for ages.. I was wondering how you got 5 degrees of caster , and old mate got the specs so close, then you showed yur arms..Ive done alignments for 20 years and it never came up that good!! Haha Ive got some arms too...looking to make my Fish handle this time
@JonnyMopar2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m even more happy about those arms after seeing the results and the alignment guy say those were very nice. Don’t forget to keep your old eccentric bolts in play to maximize adjustability.

That's the same problem I'm having with the 73 Charger 4 years ago it wouldn't start check for spark nothing and then later that day it went and started right up now it won't start the other day went out there no spark so I wonder if I go out there today and it will start I almost would rather have a points distributor in it they're so much easier to troubleshoot there's a lot of people have more trouble with than any other ignition I never had an MSD box before they any better
@JonnyMopar2 жыл бұрын
I only had an MSD box once. It was on a tired 383 in a 69 Fury. It fired up every time. Never had issues with it starting.

Im with ya on those California roads. Worst roads in America. I know. Campbase travels all over America visiting campgrounds. Hands down, CA has the worst roads.

Was that Competition Engineering 90/10's in the front? That means you have the 50/50's in the back?
@JonnyMopar2 жыл бұрын
Yes on the 90/10’s. They’re cheaper compared to other drag shocks …but…they’re a pain I the ass to adjust. Pretty much set them during install and never change them. For the back I bought used Calvert adjustable shocks on eBay to save a few bucks. It’s got a little dial you turn to adjust settings. Super easy. It’s like Rancho adjustable shocks. I really like them. Once I get to the track regularly I look forward to playing with the settings and seeing the results.

What was the name of the shop recommended in San Diego? I’m looking for someone that knows what they’re doing not just making the green light come on.

True Line Wheel Alignment. I didn’t actually use them but they do a lot of old school cars.
