Usually I can find something positive to say about most gaming consoles and systems, even when they are really old and quirky... But then there are some...that are just BAD and POORLY designed. Here is my most disappointing game console in my collection. sigh

MJR, I think your videos sometimes raises prices but for the most common sense reason. how many viewers + popular systems being talked about in many cases + good games that people want to play = more of a demand and that usually on ebay turns into more bids and higher prices. Sure your video brought those people into the fold for wanting it but honestly is it bad that you bring good games we might be interested to the front? I think not. DMP did an I hate you video with you with some super famicom puzzle game. Took me months to find the name and then had to wait 6 months for the price to come back down from 60.00 to 15.00 . I assume that your video had something to do with the fact it brought a fun puzzle game to light and people just wanted to play it. But 6 months later prices came back down and I got myself a copy. But to say your raising prices ( in a selfish hateful way) i think is not fair to you. but nothing more than more gamers interested in trying fun games that they have now discovered.

Definitely worst controller design! There are multi-carts made for the 5200 so you can enjoy many ports and home brews. Also important to note that the 4 port had a terrible RF/power combo that sparked when you plugged it in. Get a 2 port console and controller adapter if you want to enjoy the console. Otherwise, play on the 8-bit Atari Computer line and say goodbye to the console.

I'm inclined to say that the Nintendo 64 controller comes damn close. The action buttons were fine and good, as was the dpad. However, the overwhelming emphasis on the analog stick, combined with the terrible analog stick design, and I've had more first party controllers destroyed or unusable than any other system I've personally owned. Yes, there is now a mod to implement the superior GameCube stick on a 64 controller; however, i never knew, nor had the means to implement, this mod then.

I agree with John here. Ive always been an 8 bit Atari computer guy since my first one in 1987. BUT there is a trade off to keep in mind, Game prices for the Atari 8 bit computers are much higher in cartridge form. Having a disk drive option does lower the prices on some games like Pathfinder which on disk is a 20.00 game on ebay vs a cart version that starts easily in the $100 to 150 range. Other downside is no Atari 2600 compatibility. Which would be cool if looking back in the retro scene if there was an addon that could allow a 800 or XE system to play 2600 carts. But the price for carts and lack of 2600 playability is the only downsides I see to going that route. Ive been at collecting for the Atari 8 bit computers for 20+ years now and collecting on a budget has been a real challenge but slowly closing in 250 carts.

To all these people in the comments.... Most disappointing console doesn't mean worst console. Disappointing means you had expectations, you knew about it, and you expected something good. How can the Tiger GameCom disappoint you? You most likely knew it was trash when you first heard of it ... you had high expectations? I don't think so. --- For example, The most disappointing for me in recent years is the Wii U, because Nintendo gave up on it so quickly, a lot of the promised games never happened or just got delayed and ended up on the Switch

E.T. 2600 was a MASSIVE disappointment, because people actually had so much hype for it when they saw the film, they had high hopes for the game and expected it to stand out in an oversaturated market. The game failed, people had enough, and the game industry crashed in 1983.

Alcohol is a reasonable all-round cleaner but it's not very useful with oxidization, so unless you scrub like crazy (not a good idea) you will need to clean the contacts again far too soon. Use DeoxIT D5S-6 which will remove the oxidization and protect the contact once cleaned. As for the carbon pads, use either distilled water or alcohol and a lint-free cloth (or coffee filter) to clean and if you want it to last longer use DeoxIT Fader on the carbon contacts. Just make sure it's completely dry before reassembly. My understanding is Windex and it's many knock off's are ammonia based and are an alkaline so should not be used (also some have additives which could be left behind). Edit - Added the DeoxIT type "D5S-6" and DeoxIT Fader.

Most disappointing console for me? The PS Vita. I was hyped up, even bought mine on launch day with several launch titles. Little did i know that those were mainly the only good games to come for it (except for Gravity Rush and Tearaway that came out later). I had such high hopes for it but ended up mainly playing indie games on it and i eventually stopped playing with it altogether close to 5 years ago. A damn shame for a robust little handheld that was built extremely well and had some cool features. The only console to remedy that initial feeling i had for the Vita is the Switch and as of yet it has not disappointed.

Most disappointing console must be the HyperScan. The idea to use cards for upgrades is actually cool, but the controls and the insane loading times (which you wouldn't expect of a console with the name "Hyper" in it. ) kills the console. Also there weren't that many games for it, which obviously is also unacceptable.

The 5200 was a different system. The size was to allow controller storage, but what makes the system vastly superior to the 7800 is the audio processor. The 5200 is an Atari 800 consolized, but the 7800 is the 5200 with the 2600 audio processor. The joysticks were designed the way they were because they were hoping to do more with them. Tempest on the 5200 is amazing and it would have sold like crazy if it had been released. Rebuilding a 5200 controller is easy and worth the effort for some of the exclusives, like Space Dungeon. Maybe you should take a harder look at the system's library, as well as the unreleased titles that are now available through the homebrew channels.

I agree that the controller sucks, but in all fairness, the vast majority of issues can be fixed by opening the shell and erasing the oxidation from the contacts on the membrane flex circuit. It's a pain in the ass, but it works for me. I can at least appreciate what Atari *tried* to accomplish the 5200 controller. Here was a 360-degree analog joystick in 1982! Pretty forward thinking! It was also one of the first consoles, if not the first, to include a pause button, much less one on the controller itself. Had they executed the controller better, I think the 5200 would have been much more successful and highly regarded.

But once I got past the amazing first party games I noticed the selection was rather thin. Also the controller, as innovative as it was, was poorly laid out. The problem is that you need to fix this on a ridiculously regular basis. Many of the flexboards become disfunctional because of oxidation over the span of a WEEK. I like the 5200, even tough I don't directly own one (a friend of mine does). It's version of centipede is as close as it gets to the Arcade. The problem is that it's a console that is just not functional without PERMANENT repair and cleaning.

I have a Best Electronics gold contact joystick. All I had to do was send in an intact yet non-fuctional joystick and $60 (when you account for shipping), and it was WORTH IT! It came back to me with tactile fire buttons, and gold contacts and dots that will never corrode. I would say that at least 80% of the 25 games I own for the SuperSystem play extremely well on the joystick. You're right about one thing; developers DID successfully design their games around the joystick. I would concede that a couple of developers failed to implement the joystick design properly, but this is not a knock against the joystick in my opinion. Also, the ergonomics of this joystick are WAY better than the 7800 abomination. I can't even believe what I'm hearing. I'm thinking you've got to be kidding. I could have sworn I saw a video where you said you liked this console. The SuperSystem is so cool; truly innovative and historic. I adore it!!!

The thing about the 5200 controller is that it’s essentially a prototype that was never fine tuned. The materials on the conductive pads in the rev7 circuits get oxidized overtime and thus it stops working. IPA or windex cleans it but you gotta do it basically every month. There are kits to replace the buttons with better ones too (they have 3 little pads instead of one) and even gold plated circuits but they can wear out. Best to get an adapter and use a vcs joystick.

I'm not going to knock the 5200 for the size. VCRs during those days were about that size so while the size may appear big today, it wasn't a problem back in the early 80s. Coming from the 2600, the 5200 represented a huge leap in design aesthetics if nothing else.

It did have some problems though and the controller it comes with is shit, imo.

about the SP: well that's true with few exceptions like the motion sensing cartridges that require the top slot and have no reversing on settings. BUT: I have an AGS 101 here to say it: some games look pretty disgusting on it's over saturated screen. It sure is an epic advantage to have a back light on the dark, but the over saturation makes Advance Wars for example look like a complete color vomit. Even the GBC version of Donkey Kong Country looks way off. Heck old Game boy Tetris looks weird on it. On the AGS 001 and original GBA it looks great, just colorful enough and nothing weird unbalanced. That and direct sunlight visibility (as I play it a lot on a bus trip when light shines straight on the screen) makes the AGS-001 my choice, contrary to what most people would. Some newer GBA games make use of the more saturated colors and either tone the colors down (looking just a bit washed out on the older GBA and SP), or have 2 profiles for the older ones and the AGS-101. Would the 101 have less saturation and a bit better direct sunlight visibility it would be undisputed king screen wise at least

Reminds me of the AVGN video where he orders a bunch on ebay and they are all frauds basically. But that video is so old by now, maybe someone has done it. But I think the problem is the special connector the 5200 uses, it's different from the 2600/Genesis plug and I think only some obscure computers also use this plug, so the market is pretty small if someone wanted to make a controller.

I hear it is better for modding anyway, putting a form of BAED on there and having about 6 consoles worth of library and 800 games is fairly easy. Some of these old titles even support multiplayer through local wifi, so you can play w friends on some of the old classics, might even be able to go 4 player on some of the multitap titles. Loss of first party support says it all though, and the marketing always seemed like it was based around some big lie where you could literally take your home console games on the road, more like cast to the bathroom.

Grew up in the '70s, loved technology, loved electronics, never even *wanted* a console. The first affordable home computer (the ZX80) didn't emerge for years after the Atari 2600 but I just didn't see the point of a computer that could only do what someone else had told it to. When I could finally afford a C64, I played a few games (I preferred adventures) but mainly I coded on it. Writing and debugging assembler was far more fun than playing the finished result.

When my Atari 2600 broke, my dad took me to the store to get a new one and we saw the Atari 7800 and NES on sale. I wasn’t familiar with Nintendo at the time and I really just wanted to play my old 2600 games, so, we got the 7800. I kept going back to the store to see all the new 7800 games but the library never really expanded like the NES which started to develop a large catalogue of games. I felt like I made the wrong choice. With practically no new games for my “new” system, I had to get a NES. Fast forward a few years and it’s the Sega Genesis and the Turbo Graphics 16 which are “new” consoles. I picked up a Turbo Graphics 16 and instantly began having buyers remorse. I didn’t want to end up with a game system and no games AGAIN, so, I decided to return it for a Genesis. Turns out that I was right this time around. The Sega Genesis got a bunch of games while the TG16 only got a few. If it only had a bunch of games, I would have kept it because I liked it better and was not a fan of the Genesis, especially, after the SNES launched.

It's not perfect but there are adapters for using different controllers so there's not "nothing you can do about it," many of the games are great ports from the 800, and the "hugeness" is part of the charm. I'm just disappointed you think this was a disappointing system. The games were a massive upgrade from the quality of the Atari 2600 line as was the processing power. This was one of the first game sets I completed and still one of my favorites. If you want to talk about a disappointing console I'd talk about the Wii U (and I love that but let's be real).

The 5200 was a case study in poor decision making and missed opportunity. It was essentially an Atari 800 computer stripped down. I can’t help but wonder what could have been had Atari kept the same form factor for the carts and used the computer software as the library for the 5200, along with digital controllers and a keypad/keyboard accessory to support games requiring them. They did pretty much this exact thing with the xegs but it wasn’t until 1987, putting the aging hardware head to head with the NES. Had they used that concept in 1983, they would have positioned their computer line to be more competitive with the C64, and essentially provided a defense against the video game crash.

I'm just a little younger, so for me it was the Game Gear. I had only seen commercials and liked the idea of the lit up color screen and the TV tuner cartridge. I got it, in a bundle with a travel case and 2 games. Loaded it with AA batteries and started playing it, until the batteries died in one sitting. Then I was stuck using a wall plug, because nobody could afford to go through batteries that fast. Never got another game, not even sure if I saw other games, and definitely never got the TV Tuner, did they even come out in the states? I don't know where it ended up, but hey, now I can replace it with a $50 mini and get 2 whole games extra. Side note, I took it on a flight, pre 9/11, and it was the first time I was asked to turn my bag inside out. All those wires and batteries looked too suspicious.

Depends on what you expected I guess. I never expected more than an indie proof-of-concept kind of thing, and it was just that. Sure it promised more than it delivered, but hey, it's a commendable attempt from a little indie crowd sourced outfit (despite the sometimes cringeworthy marketing). I loved how it looked, and I liked that it actually wasn't that bad as an android TV box in terms of power for price. I used it for a while for Kodi and emulators, and to test some of my own android game dev attempts on the TV with a controller. There's place in hell for that controller though. Obviously not nearly as bad as a 5200 controller, but this day and age it's difficult to find a worse one. Also, the Ouya was loud and hot.

The Virtual Boy. I found it in the basement section of a thrift store for $20 with Red Alarm, Vertical Force and Teleroboxer. No stand, so I had to lay in bed with the thing resting over my eyes. The games weren't terrible considering the system they were on, but the controller had an extra d-pad that most games didn't need. (Teleroboxer used it to dodge/block hits, you had to press the same direction or opposite directions.) And man, the headaches. The Virtual Boy is the only system I've ever played that I took breaks every 15-30 minutes because it gave me throbbing headaches otherwise. That, a bad case of nogaems and the extreme chance of triggering epileptic seizures made it a horrible system.

My dad got one of these for christmas one year, the games were awesome, unless the controller broke. He could fix them a few times with foil over the contacts under the buttons, but that would stop working too. The Trackball for this system was the best, especially for centipede.

funny thing is those CD-Is are dying out right now, components are disintegrating in their cheaply made shells, time is healing that wound of video game history.

Though I did not have one, a neighborhood kid of mine (who is now a state trooper in another state than the one that we had both lived in) had a Philips CD-i video game console.

Maybe I'm wearing nostalgia goggles but I had hours of enjoyment out of the 5200! I admit I had trouble with my controllers too! If there had been a better controller would it have been a different story?

3:40 The Odyssey 2 also has terrible, cheap, easy-to-break controllers. And unlike the Atari 5200's arsenal, the Odyssey 2 controllers are HARD-WIRED, meaning once they break, you're system is done for. As you can see, the Odyssey 2 was my most disappointing system. I only had it for a week, the controllers went from bad to worse in that time. I ended up returning it and used the refund money for TurboGrafx-16 and 3DO games

Hey MJR, When you edit your videos can you convert your voice track into mono? Or perhaps get a mono microphone for your camera. Its very left-heavy in this video.

Weird... Not sure why it encoded like that because it's not 100% panned to either side... just slightly... I'll double check future videos to make sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the heads up!

That many broken controllers looks like a pad-hacker dream. Check pcb and cord, fix any broken connections, put it in a arcade style controller of choice, boom, no more mushy buttons or slapstick, just fresh clicky goodness. Older PCBs are often incredibly easy to hack with only basic soldering skills (first time I tried soldering I successfully hacked a PS1 controller)

The biggest issue with the Atari 5200 controllers, is that they used Carbon contacts. Those carbon contacts deteriorate over time and use, so yes a working controller will eventually fail, even without use. There are replacement buttons and contacts that can be purchased to fix and bring these back to working condition. But you are correct these controllers suck. But Space Dungeon was a fantastic game on the 5200.
