One of the things I that I love about the book is that they go into Inigo's training and skill in greater depth. For instance, when it looks like he's sticking his hand onto the wound from the throwing knife, he is actually sticking his fingers into the wound to pinch the bleeding shut. This is a totally BA move that I wish got more press (pun unintended but certainly welcome). This was taught to him by one of his last teachers. Once he had learned all of the great fencing styles, Inigo was thirsty for more. This led him to study one on one combat outside of duels, where the fights aren't fair and people fight dirty. For this, he learned from a Scottsman about fighting in the dark, on uneven terrain, and about emergency wound closure techniques. So in this fight, he hears the Scottsman in his mind basically saying, "Are you just gonna let yourself bleed to death like an idiot! Close the wound!" And so he remembers to do so.

Additionally, the "Pit of Despair" was at the bottom of the prince's personal "Zoo of Terror", where the prince had gathered the deadliest creatures he could find. Inigo fights his way down through the zoo. It's really cool as a book scene, but understandably the movie couldn't have so much violence to animals.

"I want my father back you son of a b**h" is still my favorite line of all time of all movies I've ever watched. After watching the movie countless times, I still grit my teeth while saying the line along with him, do a little stab of my own when he runs him through, and get moist eyed at the whole thing. And just an amazing use of a curse word; just perfect in its placement, delivery, appropriateness, and its emotional power.

That's because Patinkin had recently lost his father to cancer at the time. So for Patinkin, he felt like he was killing the cancer that killed his father. The emotion was truly there and not just acting emotion pulled from "this is what I bet it would feel like" but true "I know exactly what this feels like"

The delivery makes it, for sure, but it's also a cracking bit of scripting. It's one of the few lines in the entire film scripted without any aspect of playfulness or mischief. Even the nefarious actions of Rugen, Vizzini etc aren't typically unaccompanied by the rhetorical flourish of cartoon villains (Jill notes the monologuing here for instance), while Inigo's "Hello..." line - though sincere - is obviously played as cliche. What you subconsciously expect here at the end of the fight is more of the same, but what you get is something blunt, raw and with no clever subtleties. Mandy lands the punch, but the choice of punch and the viewer's guard being down help make it a knockout.

that last exchange (the whole thing, from like "promise me wealth" to "I want my father back, you son of a b*tch") is one of my own favorites ever, whether from a book or a movie. I've read that scene at least five times over and I still find myself reading Inigo's dialogue out loud and miming the expression and stab too, lol. Goldman made a lot of strange choices in the book, but that placement of a curse word in the main narrative was *chef's kiss* wonderful. Mandy Patinkin's performance is the perfectly whipped cream and juicy cherry on the cake.

The book and the movie were aimed at two different audiences and had two different goals. The book is a send up of all the 'high fantasy' books of the time and the movie is a send up of all the Errol Flynn/Tyrone Powers films. Goldman has been writing screenplays for decades, he's uncannily adroit with a script. He has written far fewer books, but he does teach a course on writing and that book, as well as being a send up, was also a blueprint for his writing students. It follows his classroom texts perfectly. :)

Jill: "Though he is dying, and does die before they get to him." Movie: "Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here was only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do." Have fun storming the castle! The choice to commit to letting the Inigo/Reugen confrontation play out and be epic and letting that-other-guy-no-one-cares-about lose but live as a coward is one of the strongest creative decisions in the movie, for sure. Instead of competing for pathos, it can deliver on both the proper revenge story but also the power of mercy. In the most campy way possible, of course.

Another bit of genius is the practicality of it. They told Miracle Max that Humperdinck would be humiliated. And he was. His castle was raided by three men, who scattered his guards, killed his vizier, took his bride, and then escaped and he could do nothing to stop it. He KNOWS he would've won the fight against Westley, his intellect told him Westley was bluffing, but in the end he's a coward. There was no battle to the death and no battle to the pain, because Humperdinck was scared. Practically Westley and Buttercup can ride off without having the heat of killing a Prince Regent in his own castle.

The scene is more powerful in the movie than the book, with one exception: We hear Inigo's thoughts when he hear's his old master voice in his head telling him to stand up, close the wound with his hand, and "Don't think about whatever that is, push it back in," which is simultaneously the most disgusting and badass moment in the story.

I never really thought about it before, but you're completely right about the backwards-ness of the fight. It's like Inigo doesn't even notice that he's in a fight, because he (and we) are so emotionally invested in the fact that he has finally found Rugen; that he finally can finish this. Objectively/narratively it demonstrates his prowess, but his talent only matters here because it allows him to (literally) walk through any opposition without being distracted. He spends the cliffs of insanity fight thinking about fighting, but this scene is him as a pure unstoppable force.

One of my favorite aspects of this fight is actually right after it ends. The big cathartic moment of Inigo's awesome line and finale blow is followed by... silence and an uninterrupted full shot of Rugen's body falling to the floor. It goes from incredibly dramatic closeups to a slow, almost awkward full. Inigo sighs and then just limps away. Inigo dedicates his life to beating someone, but upon confrontation Inigo finds he completely outclasses the guy, finally gets his vengeance, and there's a moment of catharsis but it's quickly replaced by a sense of directionless. Inigo doesn't actually appear to get much satisfaction from killing Rugen and later exclaims that he has no idea what to do with his life. Also the music! It builds perfectly along with Inigo and timing the notes to the sword strikes gives them so much power!

That is something notable. For all his life he's been obsessing over this one man, hyping him up in his own mind as this enormous, larger than-life-figure who took away everything dear to him. In a way, this is all true. Rugen is all of that and more. We see that he does live up to this description after he throws the knife and comments lackadaisically on Inigo's futile quest for revenge. But then the "magic" flees. Rugen keeps on backing up, going from the attack to the defense as the "Spanish brat" just wouldn't stop walking forward or saying that mantra over and over again. Worse, that Spanish brat is getting more and more confident while Rugen loses his nerve. By the time we do actually get to the finishing move, and Rugen is killed, you can see, from the way Inigo just looks exhausted, that he is disappointed that the six-fingered man didn't really "live up" to the mental image he had of him in his head. Whereas with Westley, Inigo was quite amazed at his skill, even for a seeming nobody. Rugen couldn't possibly live up to that. He lost all of his gravitas the moment he lost his nerve and let Inigo strike him twice in the arms. He went from "Dark Lord" to "mook" in about five seconds, and died just as ignobly as a mook. That's something really quite amazing about The Princess Bride, in the end. So much rich storytelling.

I've always viewed this fight as a juxiposition of 'the man who fears death above all else' and 'the man who has nothing left to live for but this'. Rugan's obsession with death and suffering is borne of absolute fear, so he steps back and retreats from any serious threat. But for Iñigo, not only has this been his whole life, but now Rugan has delivered what should be a mortal wound. He has NOTHING left but these moments to complete his task. Even the natural instinct to try to survive has been taken since he believes he will die here. That subconscious realization is where he draws this final resolve to finish it. And I love what you point out here about his lack of catharsis. It is resolved, but it was not satisfying. As tends to be the nature of revenge, really.

The Princess Bride is one of my favourite movies of all time, to say nothing of the fact that I grew up with it, pretty much the entirety of my life. I loved that ending fight with Rugen, that final fight where the hero just RFUSES to die. Rugen won, he threw the knife and used a dirty trick to kill the best swordsman in the world (taking into account that Westley had more at stake at the Cliffs of Insanity) but then, Inigo STANDS UP, he doesn't need to dance, he doesn't need to manoeuvre, at this point, he is a force of nature, the boulder coming to crush Rugen, the inescapable march of time, he deflects Rugen's blows as if they were a novice's, because to Inigo they are, there is no desperation on Earth that is going to save Rugen, all he can do, is stay out of reach, and then he doesn't, he makes the mistake of trying to brace the oncoming boulder, and is trundled beneath it for his insolence. Inigo is precise, he shows Rugen how futile the fight was, how inevitable his death, in just a few movements, paying back in dividends, the cruelty shown by a man who disfigured a child whose father he'd murdered in cold blood, cut for cut, then he makes Rugen say it, beg for your life with everything you have or could ever possess, like someone begging the reaper. For all the good it did him Inigo could have smacked Rugen's sword to the ground, instead he lets Rugen keep it, and tells Rugen what he wants in return, literally the only thing that could have saved Rugen, not making Inigo what he was in that moment. And, unlike Rugen with Inigo's father, Inigo keeps his word impaling Rugen through the heart just as Rugen speared Inigo's by stealing his Father from him. It's a truly powerful moment, for everything that was exultant in the Cliffs fight, this fight is in Dirge. And it is beautiful. Great video.

So when you had the bell censoring that famous line it reminded me of when I was a little kid. The Princess Bride was my absolute favorite movie for as long as my memory goes back. I watched as often as my family would let me but when I watched it one of my siblings would sit behind me so that when that line came up they could put their hands over my ears and make a loud sound. This went on for years and to this day that line makes me think of my older siblings sitting behind me.

I didn't see it myself, but a friend told me about a censored version of Aliens that had the curses muted. At one point (the ambush in the hive) you just see people yelling in complete silence, an occasional "is" or "you mother" slipping through. I enjoy the movie, but the first thing I remember rather than actual scenes is that friend miming that experience.

I always thought Inigo took a very small bite of the miracle pill, just before he gave it to Westley. He places his hand near his mouth prior to placing it in Westley’s mouth. This explained how he didn’t did, and why it took Westley longer to recover. It was an excellent assessment of the fight especially in the greater context of the move.

I'm not sure it's that simple. I love it when books go into chapters-long, completely unnecessary deviations from the main plot, provided it's done skillfully. Victor Hugo is infamous for it. @@meganofsherwood3665 Well, no... the book and the film are tongue in cheek, but they're not parodies, and I'm not saying either of those things. Mr Parker above claimed they were some kind of meta-commentary about editing, and I aver that's simply not the case. It's like a low-budget horror movie that knows it's a low-budget horror movie, and deliberately aims to entertain people who watch low-budget horror movies for the laughs. That doesn't mean it's a parody of the horror genre, rather it becomes its own subgenre, like Evil Dead: Army of Darkness, or the more recent Army of the Dead. Princess Bride satirizes some real tropes, but it also invents its own at times to make the story better. It genuinely wants to be a great fantasy story, while also paying homage to some of the more stereotypical traits of a great fantasy story.

I've always liked the inverted fight near the end. The rising with more energy and confidence might just be fleeting, but just to play it safe, the one that had been on the offensive uses offense as his defense. Only by trying to strike at the one who is advancing might he break the trend and threat. His fear causes him to lash out while simultaneously retreating. The scene gradually flips to align with what is more typical. Then the return of blows--shoulder, arm, cheeks, and although the sword penetrates higher than on Inigo to more closely match the fatal blow to his father, Inigo does strike the fatal blow just below the rib cage, somewhat mirroring the blade that was thrown into his belly. Although the actor who played Inigo isn't talking about the fight in this short clip, I do like how he comments on his favorite line, which relates in the sense of how his fighting was for revenge (to avenge his father's death). For someone like me who enjoys good fight scenes, but knows close to nothing about the choreography and storytelling elements behind them, these analysis videos are always a delight! I assume you have plenty of ideas and requests for other fight scenes to analyze, but I would love your take on the assassin fight scene in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows".

8:40 Fun fact: Commentary from the cast and crew revealed that Cary Elwes (Westley) and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) were complete novices at swordfighting, but threw themselves into the fights with a lot of energy and panache. Also, the first time that Patinkin and Christopher Guest (Count Rugen) practiced together, Patinkin actually stabbed Guest. At that point, Guest informed the fencing choreographer that instead of flynning like they had practiced up to that point, he would actually and actively defend himself. Being a noble does comes in handy upon occasion. TL;DR: Count Rugen was wary of Inigo Montoya in that scene in no small part due to Baron Haden-Guest being wary of Mandy Patinkin since the latter **stabbed** the former in their training session, and the good baron decided to throw their choreography out the window and use his actual training instead of flynning.

I'd seen lots of clips and quotes of the Princess Bride but never actually watched until after your first video on it and I was really surprised to learn Inigo isn't the main character

TBH, I still kinda react to the love story part like the little boy. It's...fine, but not the most compelling thing I've ever seen. Notice how the story has to keep TELLING us how much they love each other, how magical the kiss is, etc. I think the issue for me is Buttercup. I believe Westley loves her but, apart from her being very pretty, I couldn't really explain WHY. She needed more scenes like the one where she adorkably flings herself down the hill after him when she realizes she just shoved Westley, not the pirate who murdered him! Inigo and Westley-as-man-in-black on the other hand, are great individually and even better in the scenes they have together.

This fight is one of the few moments when I really prefer the book to the movie. Inigo's internal monologue, particularly between the initial knife wound and when he starts to fight back, really capture the character in a way that simply repeating the same line over and over cannot.

I love the framing device in the novel because it *exactly* mirrors the framing device's story. When you read the book to your children, you aren't going to read them the framing device. It's too cynical and too adult, a child won't understand it. So you're going to skip the social commentary and get straight to the swashbuckling and true love.

This movie and the breathtaking fight scenes in it is what inspired me to get into stage combat and acting when I was younger. I genuinely could not imagine anything better than do that. I remember being in high school and everyone wanted to do the fights from Pirates of the Caribbean (it has JUST come out) and I was so happy that sword fighting was seen as cool. I remember two students a few years later actually did the entire Wesley + Inigo fight at the end of the year and it was GLORIOUS! (And yes, they were working on it obsessively for MONTHS) Thanks so much for spread the love and joy that is this film!

When I was watching this video I had my fingers PRIMED to get into the comment section to share that Mandy Patinkin used this fight as a cathartic healing moment over his grief of his father dying to cancer, and I was so, completely delighted that this was included. When I found this out, I fell in love all over again with this scene. I weep like a wee babe every time I watch this fight scene. It that swell of emotion that Inigo displays that is so poignant and visceral that it feel like I, too, am standing strong, although battered, but never broken, in front of my own demons declaring my name proudly and spelling out their impending doom. But now, thanks to this video, I can truly appreciate the technicality of it all. Thank you for this present Jill!
