I'm so glad I'm not the only one who found it really weird that they waited until the end of their 7 year stay to learn Korean and make friends, and the first time them going to seoul on their own!?!?! I feel really bad for the three oldest girls. They're so young but they spend all of their time taking care of the house and their siblings. It makes me angry that these kids have so many responsibilities and are missing out on having fun and making friends. Also, they've been in South Korea for how long?? And the parents couldn't expose themselves and their kids to the culture? I really hope that the little boy who wanted to learn Korean gets the opportunity in the U.S. to do so - it seems like he really wants to and enjoys it!

So basically, the girls were doing dishes for the past 7 years, didn't get access to proper education, didn't make friends, and never hung out by themselves in the city.. Not saying that everyone should have the same type of teenagehood, but this case is so extreme imo. I feel like the mother doesn't like being in Korea and doesn't want to see any of the culture through her children. The girls are so awkward with everything it's scary.

I feel bad for the older kids. 7 years there and this is the first time they've been out to go visit places in SK or do something on their own. Mom wasted the opportunities living there. I don't know whether it's their beliefs or money that prevented her from having her kids experienced SK or both. Except for the babies, all those kids would've have been fluent in Korean had mom given them a chance to learn it and now she's saying the kids have bragging rights against their American peers that they've lived in SK. Would've been better if they can speak the language. Oh well, what's done is done. They're leaving.

It's almost impressive the couple has home schooled all of their children. If they just sent them all to local schools then the lady would had much less house works to do and save time & energy. There are loads of English speaking international schools in Pyungtaek as the US army base is just nearby. The kids could also learn Korean at a school / preschool. I know Korean language is useless in their home country but being a bilingual doesn't hurt anyone. Plus kids at that age learn languages really fast especially when they are exposed to a community of the language speakers.

It's obvious that these people had no interest in Korean culture or exposing their children to it. SEVEN YEARS of opportunity wasted. I doubt they'd have done anything different even if they had 1 or 2 children either; they seem like they're happy in their ignorance. Honestly I'm offended that these people would go to another country and act like this; just stay in your hometown if you're not going to take advantage of the situations that are offered to you. I watched this episode with my husband who is from Korea and I could tell he wasn't too happy with this family either(he loved the other episodes!). I get that the father works for the U.S army but were there really NO OTHER families available for the position who would have jumped at the chance to live in Korea? I'm ashamed of these people. Most Americans are NOT like them at all !! PS. It took me all of 2 DAYS to learn 한글(Korean Alphabet). These people just didn't want to try. Korean is a hard language but there is no excuse for not trying. I lived in Korea for close to 5 years and I miss it each and every day, so seeing this family just made me so angry.

I feel like you're ignorant and inconsiderate. First, it is NOT necessary for an immigrant to learn a language just because they moved to a different country. I have plenty of Mexican friends who gave parents that speak little to no English. Obviously this family didn't need to learn Korean to live in Korea happily. Just because YOU do something differently, it doesn't mean everyone has to be like you. But they still manage to get by in life. What you're doing is called discrimination.
@KateLove218 жыл бұрын
lol. Don't even try pulling that. You go to a foreign country long-term (not just a trip) and expect its residents to cater to you instead of assimilating or at least being respectful of the culture. The point is these people had absolutely no interest in Korean culture whatsoever and had no reason in being there. The parents were extremely rude and belittling when referencing their host country. Even if they never learned Korean fluently they didn't even try; that's the very definition of ignorance. No need to leave your hometown if you're going to be so closed minded. You have a very ignorant, disrespectful and entitled attitude - and it won't get you anywhere fast. It's people like this who give Americans such a horrible reputation abroad.
@hanilani88948 жыл бұрын

Honestly it's not weird to see someone living in Korea for so long but still doesn't kno how to speak Korean.I attended international school in Korea for 4 years And only have proper class during the first year, it only took me 3 days to memorize the alphabets and to read. While My English teacher have living in Korea for more than 7 years yet I kno a lot more Korean than her. She started taking Korean class during her 7th year in Korea ...which is shocking but maybe some ppl aren't capable of learning a new language probably like my dad and mom even the basic words like "goodbye" and "Are you okay? "they still ask me how to say it in Korean.Also in Korea there's a lot of Korean class , because Korean ppl like to volunteer stuff like teaching the language for free so there's shouldn't be excused like its hard to find ...

@Selvadja5 жыл бұрын
I was really surprised that they stayed in korea for so many years and didn't learn korean at all. even if they maybe didn't find the "right" schools or courses for the kids (maybe because of schedules and different ages of the kids, etc) but they could have easily learned some things by themselves. like *at least* how to read and write hangul ! i've learned that by myself too just using an app and youtube! it's not that hard, maybe except for how to properly pronounce it. the best option would have been to enroll the kids in schools in my opinion. maybe it would have been a long and hard process for the kids to adapt to it.....but at least they would have made friends with which they could learn the language! especially the very young kids have it much easier to grow up learning two languages at the same time! i really think the parents made a big mistake there. homeschooling might be better for some kids, but in general i think going to school is much better. they get to make friends, learn things that the parents maybe don't know themselves and get different viewpoints from different teachers or kids and learn social behavior/structures/etc. also i think it is a big mistake that the kids barely have seen or done anything in korea besides staying at home! what are they even going to remember of it when they go back to america? nothing but their home, a baseball game, a korean lesson and one shopping trip? that's just sad...
@Raaaaven2 жыл бұрын
I don’t want to come off as mean spirited but I feel like the parents may have wanted the older children homeschooled because they get the extra help from them, which is selfish in my opinion. If they were at school, the mom would be left with the twins and maybe the two year old and all of that housework. Regardless, if they would have let the older kids go to school, I believe their experience and language skills would have undoubtedly been way better after 7 years.
@aishas29748 жыл бұрын
I understand that they didn't learn Korean during all of that time. When I was in Germany for 5 years because of my dad's job, my family and I still spoke English and our cultural languages (my parents' native languages). I never learned German (Now I am lol). Because this family is military, the military bases around the world always has an American school. They only teach English there also so it's common for a lot of American kids to just know English in the country. If this couples children weren't home schooled, they still wouldn't know Korean. BUT what really baffles me is how they never really traveled around the country or looked more into the culture. Especially never being in Seoul. In Germany, we always took trips every single week. They should have taken the opportunity to discover new things instead of last minute. They probably did more things in the last month for the show.
