A global premiere as Joe Hisaishi and the RSC bring Studio Ghibli’s enchanting classic coming-of-age film to the stage in a landmark new adaptation in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV.
Exploring the magical fantasy world of childhood and the transformative power of imagination, My Neighbour Totoro follows one extraordinary summer in the lives of sisters Satsuki and Mei as they are swept up in exciting adventures with their new neighbours - transported to a long-forgotten realm of spirits, sprites, and natural wonder.
The celebrated 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) will be brought to the stage by its original composer Joe Hisaishi in this landmark new adaptation written by playwright Tom Morton-Smith (Oppenheimer).
Directed by Phelim McDermott with production design by Tom Pye, costume design by Kimie Nakano, and lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun, this ground-breaking production will feature puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi’s iconic score performed live.

I will never forget seeing Totoro for the first time during this performance. It was spectacular. I spent the performance with my jaw dropped. Couldn’t believe how lifelike they made him. Was just an incredible show

i went to see it with my family, my sibling and i know the film well and loved it already but for my parents they were experiencing the studio ghibli magic for the first time. my mother in particular (who has always loved theatre and used to perform herself) cried throughout and fell in love with totoro and little mei and the music. her house is slowly being filled with various totoro figures, teddies and fridge magnets now :) it was nice to be able to blend her love of theatre with my love of studio ghibli.

Saw this back in September and it's right up there among the best plays I've ever seen (and this coming from someone who's seen Warhorse, Billy Elliot, Lion King, and Ian McKellen as King Lear). What I have mad respect for is that they didn't try to make Totoro some stylised puppet like in Warhorse or Lion King: They basically just made a huge, furry muppet that takes about 5 people to puppeteer, and it looked perfect! The way it stood and moved and sounded, there were audible gasps in the audience when they first revealed him at my show. We didn't see a huge puppet, we just saw Totoro, large as life onstage.

As theatre this show was brilliant, but of course it's more than just theatre, as theatre so often is. You might question yourself about if you could view it with a child's eyes. This is perfection.

Watched this last night. Was fantastic. Full of heart, charm and humour. The acting was top notch, particularly from Satsuki and Mei, and the puppetry was a lot of fun. Totoro himself was amazing, and the music throughout was superb and true to the film, with both English and Japanese lyrics used

I am Japanese and I didn't know that threre are musical of Totoro exist. Actor of Mei is also Mei in real life is pretty cool. I am so qurious to know how they did Totoro 3D.

Although the italian word ‘ghibli’ (from which the studio gets it’s name) has a hard G, the studio’s name in katakana is spelt ジブリ, which would be pronounced jiburi in Japanese, with a soft G.
