May as well stick with 3” to keep your follow up shots closer together. 3.5” looked like they really beat you up. I use to shoot 3.5” up to about 2016 and then went back to 3”. I just improved my shooting instead of compensating for my inability to hit waterfowl. Honestly, I think it’s more of a mental thing. A #2 pellet is no more lethal out of a 3” or 3.5” shell if the velocities are similar. Payload is the only difference usually.

Remington 870 3 1/2 owner here. I only use two length shells. 2 3/4 for clayshooting and sometimes just pest birds which happen to land too close when hunting and not worth of real shell. And then 3 1/2 shells for game animals. 1 1/2 oz steel shots for waterfowl and 2 3/8 oz lead loads for everything else. Those lead loads are kickers when taking practice shots but in hunt adrenalin will take your thoughs off from unnecessary things like feeling of recoil. When you are shooting ducks from sky or emptying your tube on escaping wood grouse between trees. Only after while you realise that you just literally magdumped all your shells in 1.5 sec.

Do you really feel it just, “in your shoulder”? I ask because about a decade back I went out and bought myself a 3-1/2” goose gun, that weekend my son threw out a clay pigeon so I could try it out before the upcoming hunting trip that I had bought it for. Well he threw that clay out hard to the left so I swung that behemoth around loose as a goose and yanked the trigger on a 3.5 inch ounce and a half?? tungsten? load, It totally dusted the clay pigeon into a cloud and also blew the number 9 disc right out of my spine. Never did go goose hunting, never was “fit for combat” again either. I still have 24 of those 3-1/2” T shot shells till this day but I traded that tool in for probably about half of what I had into it and I was never cleared for full duty in the national guard again. Nowadays I stretch out before I use any 3” 12 gauge round. 3 and a half just ain’t for me. 👊

Add a couple of decades unto your date and you have me with a 3 1/2 inch 12 guage too. I killed two turkey, and one goose, and it spent the rest of its life in the closet! I also did 6 practice rounds with full bore turkey loads; haven't finished that 10 round box of shells and don't expect to!

3 1/2" 12ga kicks a lot harder than a 3 1/2" 10ga. I'm getting to old, and I'm wise enough to know not to shoot that 3 1/2" 12ga. I switched to a side by side 410 for turkeys, it is a lot more fun to shoot, if you can find shells.

Hypersonic 3"" #2 is great for ducks and geese. Kicks like a Magnum slug. I stay away from 3 12 hypersonic now. It's brutal to shoot. It kicks 3 times as much as my 10 gauge
@chevyon37s2 жыл бұрын
Better have the geese close. #2 steel just doesn’t carry the energy to penetrate out at distance to kill geese, the extra velocity from the hypersonics doesn’t net you much more effective yardage. But that said I’ve went to Boss 3” 1 1/2oz #2 bismuth for geese. Always used to use BB, BBB, and T steel shot for geese. But the Boss bismuth puts steel to shame.
@andrewgoodwin93852 жыл бұрын
@@chevyon37s BB hevi steel works great on ducks. It doesn't kick much and not that expensive. Shells here in Canada are getting hard to find. 410 are impossible.
@michellewilt44792 жыл бұрын
Kicks harder than your 10 gauge? Interesting. Im weird in that I like a good recoil when I'm shooting my long guns, and have been looking for either a 3 1/2" 12 gauge or a 10 gauge to be my waterfowl and turkey gun, so I might have to invest in a heavier 12 gauge instead just to have that extra oomph that I like. My 3" 12 gauge usually does the trick, but sometimes it just injures them and I need to dispatch them with a second shot, or more when an injured goose or duck plops into water and is able to swim and dive away from me faster than I can close to range (which really sucks when you're on a huge lake in a canoe with an underpowered motor that drains the battery too quickly and an old man who can't row... Dad and I are working on that set up as a separate project) The turkeys and waterfowl where I hunt are smart, so I don't get close range or low flying shots at them, and I need something that will reach out and take them down hard and not have to row back and forth across a lake chasing an injured goose or duck. I mean, it's a comical scene from the outside and we laugh about it when we finish our hunts, but man it's rough. The turkeys are usually easier, haven't had to chase them very far if my 3" doesn't outright kill them.
@chevyon37s2 жыл бұрын
@@michellewilt4479 a 3 1/2” load isn’t necessarily going to kill birds any better than a 3” load. It’s usually the same size/type of shot moving at the same speed, so each individual pellet has the same energy wether out of a 2 3/4” or a 3 1/2” load. And if you can’t cleanly kill birds with a 3” load, you’re just taking poor shots and hoping a likely heavier payload carrying more pellets will give you more chances to make up for poor shooting/ hunting. My favorite duck load is a 2 3/4” shell carrying 1 1/4oz of #4 bismuth. Which so happens to actually carry the same weight in payload as a majority of 3” steel shot loads. And I run it in a long range Patternmaster choke tube. You need to put loads on paper and see what they are actually doing out of a given choke tube constriction. And in many cases a 3 1/2” load out of a 12ga patterns more poorly than a 3” load (especially compared to a 3 1/2” 10ga) because now you’re pushing so many pellets down a narrow bore and getting a longer shot string and that can result in an uneven pattern with holes/ blank spots. That can completely miss a bird, even if your aim was perfect. So a tighter choked 3” load is probably your best bet as you’ll have more hits in the vital areas of a duck at what sounds like the longer shots you’re taking. And remember the effective range of a shotgun on waterfowl is only about 60-65yds max. After that the pellets lack enough energy to lethally penetrate a duck/goose no matter what load or shotgun you’re shooting. While you may like the recoil of a gun, it makes follow up shots less accurate so that may also be playing into your crippled bird problem. And heavier recoiling 3 1/2” loads will only make that worse. Also it’s illegal to pursue and shoot waterfowl from a moving motorized vessel. So you might want to be more careful in chasing cripples down with a motor, unless you can bring the vessel to a full stop before shooting at them.
@michellewilt44792 жыл бұрын
@@chevyon37s definitely looking for more velocity than number of pellets in the air. I want something that hits harder. The duck loads we did buy were incredibly expensive and worked 9 times out of 11, with two swimmers, and I haven't really seen any 3" shells that get up to 1700 fps. At least in my local stores, there may be plenty that I don't know about and I'm willing to admit that. As for shot placement, wing shots will take em down and usually kill them, but then you get the odd one or two that doesn't die immediately and sits there and swims all over the place as we chase it. And yes, motor is off and up and boat is stopped as much as we can stop it before we try to get the crippled ones in the water. And usually we are rowing rather than using the motor by that point, simply because we know it's illegal to use the motor in that manner. We spoke to a game warden about it and made sure everything we are doing is fully legal.

Try it if you get the chance. It's incredibly fun, even if you miss every shot. My dad and I went for the first time about ten years ago, and tried to go every year since with various levels of success, though we've missed the last three years. We go out on a huge lake in a dinky little canoe, with an underpowered trawling motor hooked up to a car battery that dies too quickly (so we end up rowing back to the dock) but we always have a blast. Definitely look up the laws about waterfowl hunting, since they do change from time to time and they're federally enforced not just state laws... First time we went, we hid on the shore with decoys and called and everything and got a couple shots off but didn't get anything because the ducks were in middle of the lake and not around shore. We double checked the laws and checked with a game warden and realized that we could hunt from boats. Its weird how it was worded though, so that confused us, but the game warden cleared it up (at the time you couldnt hunt from speed boats or seadoos or the like, it's had to be something like a canoe or a john boat or similar, and the motor had to be off when hunting and a few other things) and he warned us to keep an eye on those laws since they do sometimes change. But it really is an absolute blast to do and I highly recommend it for anybody who enjoys hunting. Even sitting in a blind with decoys and calling is great, but I really love being out on the water and trying to get close enough with paddles and coasting (remember motor needs to be off before shooting) to get shots off when they fly.

Looking at the comments, it seems I'm one of the few people who likes the recoil of 3.5" shells and has spent the last decade or so trying to find a gun of my own that is chambered in it. My general purpose 12 gauge chambered in 3" does the jobs I want it to, but man it just doesn't have the oomph I like on my shoulder. That said, a friend of mine has a 16 gauge that's a shoulder breaker and I love that thing when he brings it out. I'd get myself one, but the shells are incredibly hard to find. My friend only found two boxes of #9 shot target loads in the five years since he began bringing it out to the range, and nothing to hunt with. I don't know why, but I just enjoy a good recoil in my long guns, and I don't find that it effects my ability to take follow up shots if I need to because nothing I use with a heavy recoil is semi auto. I still use smaller calibers that don't have recoil for hunting too, but my favorite guns all kick like mules.

What’s the barrel quality on your two cz’s. I’m looking at buying a new waterfowl gun. But I heard the barrels wasn’t good steel like all the other brands. I’d like to know before I spend the cash

I forgot who makes it , but on my 870s I use the super turkey full or the undertaker on them , both will send that gun club a long ways ,in my guns . When I'm out rabbit and or squirrel hunting, I leave room in the magazine for 1 load of buckshot , in case I find a sore toothed bear , a few years ago had a case of hydrophobic coyotes and other critters here .

Ya just don't need 3 1/2 Inch shells. 3in mags will do everything you need without destroying your rotator cuff. Well maybe just a little...
