Excelente trabajo!

Medieval synth
@camelCased3 жыл бұрын
This is awesome! For battery power, I myself am currently experimenting with two NiHM AA batteries converted to 3.3V through a miniature step-up converter (bought on AliExpress). I'm a bit wary of Li-Ion batteries in custom experimental handheld devices, so AA seemed a good choice. Not sure how good they would work for a full synth, though. In my case, it's just a MIDI controller (wireless - using RFC24 modules). That is - if I have enough time to finish it. I started with a Roland Aerophone style mouthpiece, which is a sax-like design and is using a lever touching the reed for pitchbend. However, it might be tricky to get right because the reed has very little movement that has to be translated into a larger movement for the optical sensor to have enough range to work with. So, I'm now starting to like your pitch bend approach better (although it requires more movement from player's side).
@KontinuumLAB3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. My mouthpiece has a total flex of +/- 22⁰ in each direction, but could be made with much less movement and still get plenty of resolution from the sensor. You're right, batteries are tricky. Compact size vs safety vs power requirements. For instruments as compact as this there's no perfect solution...

This looks awesome - even slicker than your older versions! Does the small size feel awkward at all? Seems like you'd be bending your arms quite tightly. Will you be talking more about what you've used for the buttons in a later video? My electro-sax is getting there - I think the final cardboard prototype is pretty much done, now I want to figure out a nice shape for a 3D printed body. I've ended up using moving mechanical keys that use capacitive sensing underneath. That means it feels a bit more like an acoustic sax than just using capacitive buttons. Thanks for the inspiration!
@KontinuumLAB3 жыл бұрын
Thanks George! The size is pretty extreme, but I don't feel like it impedes my playing much. The current iteration is basically the limit of how small I'm able to make it. I will be making a longer version, which will make for easier access to the breath sensor, plus allow adjustment for the thumb strap and other stuff. I will definitely cover the key design in a future video, but it's pretty simple. They're still capacitive keys, with a dielectric layer. Now the dielectric's just between the outer metal part and a separate electrode underneath it. As a saxophone player I can definitely appreciate why you would want to make mechanical keys. Have you seen the "Travel Sax"? It's a compact electronic saxophone with a pretty cool mechanical key setup which closely emulates a real saxophone.
@GeorgeBryantLuxtylo3 жыл бұрын
@@KontinuumLAB I hadn't seen the Travel Sax before, so thanks for mentioning it! It looks like the tactility will be awesome, but the styling seems a bit unrefined (just boxes stuck together). That also led me to the YDS-150, which looks pretty cool too! For me the key feel is as big a part of this as the mouthpiece feel, so I'm trying to get it right. It's pretty close to a dodgy-looking version of the Travel Sax one!
@mehdibensaada74752 жыл бұрын
well i loved the idea , just wanted to know does it works well as a sax ( i mean sax sound ) and how much is the one ?
@KontinuumLAB2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mehdi. There is a sax sample on the OHMs, but it's not a super natural sounding sax. The program + the 16 wavetable synths currently included take up 99% of the memory on the Teensy 3.2, so that's a limitation. I'm working on a new prototype which uses the Teensy 4.0, which has much more memory and processing power, so that will mean more and better samples, on board delay, and a few more improvements.

Fantastic demo! Looks like you've packed in tons of capability - love the pitch bend. When you have the design completed, is this something for which you would consider selling plans and the program, or a full electronics kit?
@KontinuumLAB3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! My plan was to sell the finished instrument, but a kit might not be out of the question, for those who are able to print the body themselves.

I keep finding myself coming back to this video. Given my limited experience with these instruments, how does this compare to things like the Akai EWI models, and the NuRad? The size is so much smaller than those instruments. Also, how much do you see your OHMs retailing for?
@KontinuumLAB2 жыл бұрын
I don't have an EWI or NuRad to compare with. I've played the EWI on several occasions, and I think the OHMs compares quite favourably, although of course there are a few different models of the Akai horn. The NuRad looks very cool, but I guess is especially interesting for those who want to control analog synthesizers, while the OHMs is focused on the on-board audio aspect. As for the price, I basically made this version of the OHMs for myself. Although I did at one point intend to manufacture and sell it, that's not a priority for me right now, sorry. Maybe at some point in the future.

@KontinuumLAB3 жыл бұрын
@@juana.velazquez9286 There are 13 sounds on there right now, with options to apply filters in different ways which changes each sound quite a lot. The complete setup of the instrument (sound, filters, sensor settings etc) can be saved by the user as presets. 10 presets in total. Don't know what you mean by "updates will be added" I have considered making a version with the Teensy 3.6, which would give more space for samples. Maybe I will at some point in the future, maybe not.

@@KontinuumLAB what about the board you use? Would it be possible to make my own?
@KontinuumLAB3 жыл бұрын
@@itsaboutchina732 I'm using a Teensy 3.2, with the Teensy audio adapter. That's all publicly available. I am however working on an adapter board to better organize the connections of display, keys etc, so on future versions that will be a separate item. Also, I have no immediate plans to document the design, code etc, because I just don't have time. So making your own will be tricky.
