I absolutely love English paper piecing and the fact that it’s a great take along project. My personal preference is thread basting, but it’s good to know there are other options

Nice job! I never used glue but basted through the paper….. but I was 12. 50+ years later I’ll try your technique, precut! Add the hole punch, no whip stitch & remove the paper before sewing. I love having small ready to go projects. Always learning something new! Thanks!

I was sorry to hear about people struggling with glue as I have been doing EPP for the past few years using a Sewline glue pen and found it very easy to use. It is low-tack, so not sticky on your fingers, but holds the papers in securely for as long as necessary and then it is very easy to remove them. Quicker and less faff than tacking with thread.
@FaodailCreation

Maybe I should look I to this. The problem I've had with glue is the fabric is very hard to take away from the paper.

Hi- I just started learning EPP a couple weeks ago. I'm hoping you can help me with a question. I have used the SewLine glue stick and now I'm finding the paper difficult to remove also. Does a steam iron help to release the glue so its easier to remove the papers? I don't mind if my hexi papers aren't reusable....Ok...I'm back. I JUST now, USED MY MINI IRON to UN- GLUE the BASTING (SewLine glue stick) on my hexi and it's worked NICELY. Now the papers are MUCH easier to remove❣But don't use steam.
@FaodailCreation
@FaodailCreation 2 жыл бұрын
The glue is water solvable, get a water sprizer and spray with a bit of water and it should ease up the glue to remove the paper

Thanks for sharing your technique. I don't love glue basting, but it does make the process more mobile. I like to do it when we take long car trips to visit family. I can do all the steps in the car with the glue or thread basting. But regardless of how we get the job done, EPP is a lot of fun. Now I want to discover new ideas for projects to make other than large quilts.

I love EPP too! I don't use glue either. I find it messy and hard to work with. But I also don't iron or trim or use multiple wonder clips when doing hexagons. I just use the 2.5" squares as they are, fold the first edge and clip once at the corner, then start basting around the corners. It tuns out nice and straight for me and leaves the perfect amount of room for the needle to glide through right over the paper. I can share the link to the thread basting tutorial I used if you might be interested. I haven't seen your way of stitching before. How does it hold up in a quilt with wear and tear?

I am currently doing an EPP project, a quilt with vintage looking fabric. I used glue and the papers are falling out and it has become a mess. lol It is just for me, so I am not worried about how it turns out too much, I consider it a learning experience. I love to do hand sewing, but I am either going to have to baste in the papers, or use that foam product that you leave in. So I watched your video with great interest. Thanks for making it.

I am trying EPP for the first time, and testing the glue, with the material cut out with the rotary pattern. I like your way, the presser is adorable and works well. The pattern is too close to the size of the paper to get the stitches in as it is too close to the edge. I have not yet gotten to taking out the paper, so it is good to know there is another way.

I use a dab of glue stick in the center of the hexi to keep it in the middle of my fabric. I then stitch baste but NOT through the paper. I sew all the “petals” on the middle hexi then easily remove the paper from the middle hexi only so I can bend the middle to stitch the petals together. Then I press. Easier to travel with. It’s actually quite a quick process and the paper removes very easily because there is only one very small glue spot on the back of each piece. Thoughts on my process??

Have you made a full quilt? Pulling the papers is fine for one “flower”, but the paper give the fabric the stability and strength when you are talking about 50 or 60 being sewn together. The pull of the weight would be to much without the paper.

I love paper piecing, but I love it because it is portable. Your method is definitely not portable due to the ironing. I have absolutely no trouble using sew line glue. Paper come right out. If I do baste I just hold it in my hand, turn one edge over, start basting. No clips. I feel you have too many steps. That being said, it’s everybody’s preference.
