I wasn’t much of a fan of Celine’s until I accompanied a friend to one of her concerts about 20 years ago. It was absolutely mind blowing how great of an artist and performer she is. If you ever get a chance to see her in concert, go!

This song is one of my all time favorites, and it was actually originally written for Meatloaf by the same person who wrote the other song you just reacted to the other day, so you’re not imagining things hearing the similarities. He didn’t record his version until after this became a hit for Celine though.
@wnsafford18543 жыл бұрын
Steinman & Meatloaf argued over this song. Meat said it was written for him & intended for Bat II. Steinman said it wasn't written for Meat & he'd always intended it for a woman (& IF I recall correctly, Steinman took legal steps to stop Meat from recording it). Steinman then put a group together (Pandora's Box), just for 1 album, & released the original in 1989. The group included Steinman, Ellen Foley, Elaine Caswell, Todd Rundgren, Rory Dodd & others. I'm assuming, after 2 "female versions", Steinman finally relented, since Meat recorded it in 2006 (I favor his duet version).
@williamrowley20192 жыл бұрын
@@wnsafford1854 yes that’s what I heard as well. Personally I don’t like Meat Loaf’s version as I don’t think it works as a duet and I just don’t get the same emotion as I do from Celine. That’s my personal opinion and I’m not saying that you are wrong just don’t think his version is as good. But yeah that’s the story behind the song and I’m so glad you told it so well!

Celine cut her feet while filming this video, because of the glass etc on the ground. She never said anything to anyone. She still carried on over several days filming this. Celine is the best version of a DIVA!! Jim Steinman was a genius. His videos were mini movies. His power ballads were massive! Meatloaf was not happy Celine getting this song! You're right, Celine is theatrical. She's a performer in the true sense. There are a lot of amazing singers out there who can belt and hit the notes Celine can hit. But it doesn't always feel the same way. There's no humour, or drama, or emotion. That's why she is one of the best selling singers in history. That's why people still listen to her, and go to her concerts.

The song structure (pacing), arrangement, and lyrics are what stand out in this song. Jim Steinman was a genius at taking you on an emotional ride. Celine was an excellent muse for this song (her best). While the video may remind you of other videos produced for Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler, Simon Archer (cinematographer) and Jaromir Svarc (art director) really did an outstanding job melding the music and video into one. Your body language @9:51 said it all (rollercoaster ride of emotions as the ride slowly comes to an end - endorphin rush via video). Celine Dionne and Sarah Brightman are very good at taking a song and embracing it emotionally with artistic restraint. Jim Steinman (writer) was a master at tempo changes (stepping down for effect) and very elaborate bridges (Read Em and Weep) that smoothly bring you to a glide to eventually a solid coda. What you are reacting to is a writer with formal music training and experience leveraging standard song structure at an advanced level. Most power ballads are written by artists with a sound music background / training.

Interesting that you mentioned it reminded you of Meatloaf. I looked up the song last night and the writer, Jim Steinman, repeatedly turned Meatloaf down when he requested to record it saying it was meant to be sung by a woman. The song was inspired by "Wuthering Heights". Also, if you're interested, meatloaf did eventually do a version of this song in 2006

Talking of Meatloaf, the song you mentioned was written by the same guy as this one Jim Steinman. This was always one of her bigger songs, one that everyone remembers like My heart will go on. The intended full version is always better than the radio edit which is still 5 mins or so. This is one of the only songs really that shows a narrative to it and shows exactly what's going on like, I would do anything for love, by Steinman. This one too was originally done by Pandora's Box, and then recovered as a duet with Meatloaf. Celine's version however is always the best, the vocals and the intensity in it just melds with the song so perfectly. I've been a fan of Celine for about 30 years now and I'll always keep coming back to this song. Another song that would be great to react to or 2 if you're open to it that might not share the intensity but are still worth listening to are "I Surrender" and "To Love You More". Bu,t fantastic reaction to this song. Celine is always a great go-to for genuine song and music lovers.

So good to see younger people reacting to (and enjoying) songs I grew up listening to. (Oh, I loved when you searched for the credits of this song and found the "Falling Into You" album. I used to have this CD, but my dad damaged it.) In 1999 Celine Dion released her compilation "All The Way... A Decade of Song (and Video)" and this video had both versions included on the DVD - which is gold. It is funny when I remember this TV special (back in the 90s) where Celine said "It's All Coming Back To Me" had been the biggest song she had ever recorded and some time later she recorded the main song from Titanic. I don't know whether you have reacted to any of her live performances or not, but be sure to react to "The Power of Love (Live in Memphis, 1997)". The whole concert is awesome by the way.
