one tip about the audio tests if you'd like. i'm an audio engineer. if you want to better represent the headphones, you should account for proximity effect. the tiny speakers are really close to our ears, which makes them sound better than if they were just standing somewhere in the room. this gives them a bass boost, acoustically. on the other hand, laying down the glasses on a table might make the table accept mechanical vibration from the glasses and change the sound to raise the mid frequencies. so what you want is to take off the foam off your mic, and take the glasses in your hand, and place the speaker outlet pointing towards the mic diaphragm, as close as possible, without touching the glasses to the mic. you don't want the glasses to be laying down on anything. happy reviewing!
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Жыл бұрын
That's amazing feedback, thank you! My mic actually has an internal wind screen as well so I'm not how that'd affect it, but I'll try to do this in the future! I'd considered 3cm away enough, accounting for the ear being in the way but it's clearly not the case 😅
@cheater00
@cheater00 Жыл бұрын
@@cryobyte33 the closer the better :) i'd say match the sound to what you personally perceive, the speakers you're listening to your video on are going to "get in the way" and you need experience dealing with that...

Having these they are more trebly as expected with a lack of bass definition but they serve their purpose.. still would use headphones/earbuds.

Omg these would be SO nice for air travel. One extra thing I’d put on the wish list is the ability to, if u had 2, to use both at the same time so 2 people could watch something together like during travel.

I agree, I plan to try them on my next flight or even train ride! I don't have another set to test, but theoretically you could with 2 adapters and an HDMI splitter. That'd be incredibly bulky, though 😅 Thanks for watching!

As someone who also wears glasses, It's nice to hear that it's an enjoyable experience both worn over glasses, and using the official glasses kit. Though I'd personally like something that would let me clip it onto the bill of a ball cap, so it doesn't touch my face at all.

The improvement is solid. The most informative video on this product yet! Hell yeah, I didn't know this thing came with different nose pieces. One thing I can think of is overlaying images over something IRL, let's say you wanted to paint your room, but wasn't sure of the color . Bam let's see what blue looks like with the furniture. Maybe even nice if it can fill only one lens,as to compare and contrast between how colors are already and what that change would look like.

Fyi I’ve had these glasses a while, they are great. One thing most people will eventually experience is the glasses not working or appearing to have audio/visual artefacts, it’s worth mentioning that the USBC cable they have is often the part at fault and is very easy to replace so make sure you get a new cable if things seem to act up. The glasses are more robust

One very important issue to be aware of, is the video going black when the steam deck battery gets down to about 30%. Sometimes it'll happen sooner than 30% sometimes it'll take longer, it's not super consistent, and the only way around it is getting an adapter to charge while you play.
@TheD0pefish

I think it depends on the overall energy consumption and remaining battery power. In games like Elden Ring it went black for me after 50%, in less demanding games like Hollow Knight I never experienced that issue.

A Redditor linked to this review. As someone who fell into those "recommended" categories, I've had my XReal Air's for over a month now. Your review is *exactly* my experience with them... I'll further emphasize your point about getting the prescription lenses... they're absolutely must-have's. I also own the "sunsetted" Epson BT-300 AR glasses for commercial drone use, and although they are / were a full-featured piece of tech (and about 3X the price of the XReal's), I can count on one hand the number of times I've used them for anything outside of piloting. I absolutely love these Air's and I get just as excited to use them as I did when they first arrived a few months ago... Fantastic review too by the way. Subbed. Thanks!

“I’ve got my XReals on … so I can so I can …” Sorry, that portion of my comment was sponsored by Corey Hart and my 80s childhood. But seriously, Kyle, brother, this is maybe one of the most thorough and considerate reviews of this product that I have ever seen, great work outta you! Really appreciated the simulated screens and audio test, though for the latter I wonder if you might include a reference audio sample of some sort so as to at least give an idea of performance relative to another device? Or maybe a couple devices? For example, sound off with your MacBook Pro. Then maybe the Deck speakers proper. Then the glasses. The audience then has some reference points to better surmise performance. Kudos on the sponsorship, love to see it! Keep on playing with alternate forms of content-you have a unique perspective and I think we’re all excited to see how you continue to refine your voice on this medium.

I got these and returned within 24 hours. The primary reason was comfort, I just didn’t find them comfortable for sessions over 30 minutes, the clamp was way too tight. Honestly I’m a skinny guy so I thought that wouldn’t be an issue but I suppose not. Then, motion sickness. I get motion sick in cars depending on the driver, but never in video games, but these glasses did give it to me unless I kept my head perfectly still. If they fix the comfort and allow you to fix the location of the screen in space, I might buy a newer model, but considering the price and those pitfalls, they were not for me.

Thanks for the review Cryobyte! I reviewed these glasses myself (unsponsored) months ago and plan a follow up. Some things worth noting for potential buyers. A few adapters I found to work include the "Redmagic Gaming Dock" (which have unfortunately increased in price, but can go down to $40 when sales hit on Newegg). Also a competitor (Rokid) does make an adapter with power passthrough, though I've not tested that adapter. Also, for anyone planning to use this with their phone or a desktop PC, the functionality of the apps are limited.

These are amazing to pair up with the Citra Emulator in the full Stereoscopic 3D mode. Takes a fair bit of tinkering but playing Zelda, ALBW, OOT3D, MM3D with the Project restoration mod or other 3D standout titles like Bravely Default, Mario 3D and Starfox 3D is insanely cool. Add in texture packs and bump up internal resolution and you have the Perfect 3D cinematic experiences on the go or anywhere - Feels Revolutionary!

I use these with my deck when I have my contacts in as I haven't gotten my prescription on the inserts yet, but I mostly use them to watch videos on my phone while doing other things. The mobile app has a mode that converts the full screen into a smaller corner screen so, I can queue up a bunch of lovely videos like these and then leave my phone in my back pocket while I was dishes or clean around the house. Nice alternative to listening to an audiobook or a podcast.

Been a big fan of your channel and really appreciate your hardcore tinkering and testing to maximize the Steam Deck's full potential. I'm glad you discovered the XReal Air, which I've been using for quite a few months now and will say that this is hands down the BEST Steam Deck companion. Two adapters which will allow you to charge and play are the Viture charging adapter (made officially for the Viture glasses, a competitor of the XReal Air) and the Nubia Redmagic charging dock. You'll need it for sure if you start to use the XReal Air routinely with your Deck.

The Rokid Airs look like something out of ready player one but functionally perform better for me. There are two adjustment knobs for focus "one for each prism". I'd be curious to know if you have a better experience while using regular glasses as I am not aware of a prescription option. I am so torn on these On one hand, hell yeah I want to upgrade my phone and use these with phone while out cycling, as heads-up display, or as personal monitor with steam deck On other hand, with their price, I want to wait and see the next generation of this tech Very intriguing category of devices. Makes me wonder how one can set up a portable PC with them and pass-through charging

I've only used the Airs in this "category" of product, but it could definitely meet those needs. I'm not aware of a major hardware update anytime soon, but I do know that they recently announced some major software updates including 120hz support! Thanks for watching!

Do I get that right: They don't work on Hubs as every other Display/TV? What's so special about them? I think I then have to wait till this got fixed... BTW: Good video as always!!

These definitely look great, however I’ve got a couple questions. Firstly am I right in understanding that currently there is no way of using these plugged into a dock so I could have a proper pc set up with mouse, keyboard, glasses and deck all connected? Secondly is there a way of having dual screen with steam deck screen as 1 and glasses as screen 2?
@cryobyte33

Thanks for watching! 1. You can't use these with a typical dock with the included accessories, but if you get the adapter I mention in the video (or apparently the Red Magic Dock Adapter), you can use the HDMI output from the dock to the glasses and it'll work perfectly as you describe. 2. Yup! I used the glasses as my primary screen and my Macbook as my secondary screen for email and Discord 🙂

Thank you so much for your response! So just so I understand the use of the adaptor - I would plug the glasses into the nreal adaptor you mentioned via usb c then run hdmi out of the adaptor into dock and then deck plugged into dock as normal along with other peripherals and everything should work and deck should charge?

After hearing your great review, I WOULD have actually bought one... ... if they were available in germany. But they aren't yet. And I dunno what hassles a UK import might bring with it. Hope they get to that soon ._.

Can we get tears of the kingdom deck dive? You could include overclocking too and the fps mods and which ones are best, I've been trying to figure out the best way to play it and it really does get close to native sometimes but I can't always tell if the settings I move to are better than the last :/

I have the NReal air before rebranding. One thing you want to keep in mind is that you get motion sickness when you play on the goad while being on the road for over an hour. other than that, it is really nice having your own big screen. just wished it wasn't soo tight when putting it on
@cryobyte33

I mentioned the tightness in the video, but I wasn't able to test in the car since I don't have one anymore. That said, I get sick from reading signs in the car so I'd guess that the Airs wouldn't be an exception 😅 Thanks for watching!

Cant wait for a revision for these with those wish lists included. The charging part of the video was a surprising moment for me. I thought for sure the deck could charge and output the screen. That for me is a major downside. I hope to get into this market in a year or 2 when some of these early adopter gripes go away. Thanks for the review!

Thank you for watching! It's less of a limitation of the Deck and more of the glasses themselves. You can work around it with certain adapters, but I obviously wasn't able to test those 😅

Look they seem fun but I just really don't think it's worth the nearly 400 dollars, I feel like for most people it'd be a toy they'd play with for a few weeks and then forget in a drawer or sell for rent money or something. It's just so niche and expensive that I think you'd be better off investing in another tv. Maybe if they halve the price in a few years I'd consider it

Definitely possible! I've been using them daily for a month and they've been great, but it's certainly a luxury product. I find them great for relieving neck and shoulder pain, so they've been more of a therapeutic miracle than I thought they'd be 😅 Thanks for watching!

I disagree. These are portable (unlike a TV) which is really important for me because I move often, sometimes to places where you don't have a place to put a TV. Also, they sound great for games where a bigger screen greatly improves the experience (RDR2). Just the comfort of being able to lay in bed and have a floating TV above you, while resting the Deck (controller) in your lap sounds like a god-send for neck & hand comfort. These would be worth every dollar to me.

Nice summarization CrytoByte33. When looking through the AR glasses, is the virtual screen stationary like PS VR2 or does it move around with your head? Hopefully we'd have access to both options when using the AR glasses as there are time when I'd prefer the virtual screen to be stationary or move with my head.

I would love to have a laptop designed for these glasses, where the screen could be removed and you could just type on a keyboard connected directly to the glasses. this could probably be arranged or hacked into being, but that doesn't sit right with me.

There was something similar to what you're describing announced recently, but the name escapes me. Regardless, I like the fact that I can use these as my primary screen and have the actual screen act as a "second screen" since I can see through the projection 🙂 Thanks for watching!
