@@SantiagoAQ I really wanted to make a request if thats possible. Can you make a video on what should be a good diet plan while we working on USMLE preparation; specifically focussing on diet plan of USMLE exam day. I saw video on dirtymedicine who explained and suggested use of water and protein bars only. I want you to explain that if possible. Thanks alot.

As someone who also enjoys David goggins' work, it's sad to see you say you don't need to work harder but work more efficiently. We got to get after it, the more difficult the better
@SantiagoAQ
@SantiagoAQ Жыл бұрын
I look at it like this: working hard only makes sense when you work smart. Let's say you want to grow bigger quadriceps, you can very effortfully spend a lifetime doing calf raises, and go brutally hard on them, making the exercise as difficult as possible. But that will take you no closer to your goal. Sure, it's still working out, it's even leg related, and it's still difficult, but is a very ineffective strategy nonetheless. A better plan would be to do the right exercise (Eg. squats), with the right technique and THEN focus on the difficulty. In that case effectiveness (which was the word I should've used in the video) goes before difficulty. A similar thing happens with learning. You can spend an eternity making things difficult in yourself with an ever increasing amount of time in the library, but if all your efforts are spent on ineffective techniques, aren't you putting the cart before the horse? That was the point I was trying to get at in the video. And yes, I do believe that once you learn how to work smarter, you don't NEED to work as hard. It's basic math. If your previous method forced you to study one topic in 7 hours and now you know how to do it in 2 hours, by definition you stop having the need to work those extra 5 hours. Do you want to use those extra hours to delve in deeper in the topic, study other topics, or do something different than study? That's up to you. But no, the argument that you NEED to keep working hard to reach the SAME POINT, just doesn't make sense. To expand further, I do believe difficulty is paramount in learning. After all, most of the research on effective learning is based on the framework of "desirable difficulties" of Dr Bjork. But that doesn't mean at all that "more difficulty" is always the answer. This is mainly because difficulty almost never works linearly, it has diminishing returns, and breaking points. If you're a medical student you're probably aware that the very same stimuli that causes hypertrophy also causes necrosis, all depends on the dose. If I go to the gym and lift a weight just above my strength level I get stronger, if I go to the gym and put myself beneath a bar with 25.000 pounds, I will just injure myself. More is not always better.

@@SantiagoAQ Boss, I am happy to see that I pissed you off. I hit just the right spot or nerve xD. You’re right, Time x Efficiency= Results. Just working hard is not enough we have to work on the efficiency part and aim for desirable difficulty, because even the strongest of wills will get tired eventually. It’s an ultra, not a marathon. To make some things clear, I don’t believe that anyone “NEED to keep working hard to reach the SAME POINT”, not sure if anyone is trying to; because it’s a waste of time, dum and exhausting. My point was simply that The idea of work less get more done is inherently lazy and will lead to a lazy life; therefore, you should work more not less and smarter just to not lose your skills because we are either getting better or worse. The way I see it is like this: The idea of doing what’s “enough” will lead anyone to get worse over time. Let’s say as you said that I want to get bigger quadriceps, doing calf raises won’t do me anything but after a while, I learn that squats are very good, I start doing them, improve at them and get results constantly like you are right now. I have reached "desirable difficulty". However, from my own experiences, I have learned a rule, doing the same amount of anything i.e studying for 5 days or more will make me get worse at that things like push ups or anatomy. I learned that it’s very hard to reach desirable difficulty, therefore, I put myself in relatively uncomfortable situations most of the time because if I don’t endure it I will just get worse. For example, when I ran the same distance for 5 days the first 2 were easy and then I started thinking on the third why it was getting harder and whether I should shorten the run but if I increase it a little every day I will complain about the longer distances but I won’t struggle with what I struggled with 2 weeks ago. The reason I advocate for more work even when you are done is the same reason why Goggins still does crazy things despite being the toughest man alive, the same reason why Mike Tyson was trying to get better when he was the best in the world because we are never done never there… so to wrap it up maybe say work harder and smarter and enjoy the pain :)
