I have been an microfour thirds user for years. My favorite is my Pen F. Now in my advancing years I have slimed down my gear to smaller a lighter kit an Em10mkIv and EPM1 with small light prime lenses. This rig is not the top of the line pro Olympus gear but they do enable me to keep make images. My current project is a photo book of my neighborhood. That way I do not have to trace far and can go out when I want Evan it it’s for an hour or two. As long as I can keep making images life is good.

I recently sold my Nikon Z7II and 24-120mm f4 lens for the OM-1 Mark ii and the Zuiko 40-150 2.8 lens and no regrets. Its an amazing camera, who can easily compete with other full frame cameras. OM cameras brings joy in photography and thats what counts, plus the image quality is just amazing, especially on the OM 1 Mark ii. OM-5 is also a fantastic camera. I just simply love micro 4/3 cameras. Its lighter, compacter and cheaper compared to the other brands. Same as you I have back problems (chronic) and sometimes my hip, which is very painful sometimes. I hope you are wel and the color blue looks amazing on you...just saying ;). An underrated camera…only an incremental upgrade from its predecessor but it delivers; great photos coming from a small, IP53 weatherproof camera (though not all the lenses are quite so weatherproof). Great IBIS too. Looking forward to some future videos…it’s designed for the outdoors, but maybe try some street work too when you want small and light!

Hey Leigh, so glad you are taking the M43 seriously. My wife and I both have Lumix but very similar in quality as well as features. We have had some issues to work out but we are really liking them. I haven't used it as much as I'd like but I will soon fix that. We decided to make a move to lighter gear after a couple of trips to Europe and lugging bags of Nikon full frame gear with us. As much as I loved my trusty Nikon lenses, I gave in to common sense. Nat Geo hasn't been asking for my stuff and I'm not selling prints so we decided it comes down to our enjoyment, it's that simple. I can easily carry my bag again and not suffer aches and pains just from carrying it to locations. I look forward to more videos from you on this new page for you.

Welcome to the m4/3 family. I have quite a few m4/3 systems both Panasonic and Olympus and many lenses from both. For lenses it just depends on how heavy you want to go. There are a couple of lenses that I simply would not be without The first is the oly 300mm f4 prime. It is simple a phenomenal lens. It is on the bigger and heavier end of the m4/3 line but when you compare it to a 600mm f4 Full Frame equivalent it is a dream to use even making even hand held shots possible and usable with the excellent IS of the Olympus bodies The second is the 40-150mm 2.8. It is another one of those lens that just couldn’t go without. Plus both of these lenses can take the 1.4x and 2x converters. The 3rd choice would either be the 12-100mm f4. Or if you need more speed the 12-40mm 2.8. Another couple that I really like is the Panasonic / Leica 9mm 1.7 and 15mm 1.7 They are both very small and light. My main Astro lense is the Laowa 6mm f2. It is also a great lens even though it is a manual focus lens. But you don’t really need auto focus or a lens like that for Astro stuff This is the great thing about the m4/3 system. There are so many lens options to choose from. You can go with the super small lenses even though they may not be as fast the image quality is second to none. And at the end of the day you’re not in pain from packing twice or more the weight and size of other systems. It just wasn’t worth it anymore for me. I am enjoying my photography again and still coming home with lots of keepers instead of aching arms and back

I’m a long time m43 user and always shot with the 5 series Olympus cameras and currently own the OM-5. Perfect travel, adventure and all around camera. I also shoot Sony full frame but love my Om-5 for small size and weather resistance. I take it out in any weather and living in the Pacific Northwest that means lots of rain and snow. It’s just an amazing and fun camera. Shoots fast enough for my kids sports. I like my Sony A7Rv for ultimate image quality, high resolution and when I don’t care about carrying a bigger system. Also for super low light stuff. M43 and full frame compliment each other really well if one wants to run two systems .

Not sure if you've tried the 60mm 2.8 macro, but it may surprise you. It's a very sharp lens and weighs a fraction of the 90. It's weather sealed too. I have a feeling OM may stop making this lens; actually, the current ones are branded Olympus, so I doubt OM has ever made them. But once that stock is gone, there's a good chance it will be discontinued in favour of the 90. It's also about a quarter of the price of the 90.

I'm not a wildlife photographer (though I long to be), just an enthusiastic amateur. I used to shoot with a Nikon D300 years ago, but when I developed a chronic illness that first presented in my hands, I switched to Olympus and have never looked back. The cameras are gorgeous, are so tactile and so *tiny* that I want to pick them up and pet them. I mostly shoot street/documentary style photography. I'm also on a budget, so I predominantly shoot with the Olympus 25mm f1.8. It never leaves my camera.

Great news that you are using OM system cameras. I have been a long term Olympus / OMS user alongside many other full frame cameras such as Leica, Panasonic and Sony. Whilst I like experimenting with the FF cameras my 'go to' cameras for travel and most outings is the OM5 / EM5 / OM1 due to the overall light weight, of the combined cameras / lens package, weather sealing and excellent results.

I have been using Micro Four Thirds for some time now, more so for street photography and I have to say they are great cameras to shoot with. I haven't used the latest OM system cameras as I tend to go for older models, like the GX9, Pen-F, E-M5 I and GH4. In terms of lenses I use, for Olympus I have the 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II which is a great budget telephoto lens, however it can be quite soft on the long end. The 60mm f2.8 macro is definitely one of my favourites as it is an affordable macro on the used market that delivers excellent image quality. For street, I love the 17mm f1.8 as I tend to lean toward the 35mm field of view for street shooting. I also have a 20mm f1.4 which I don't use as much as I should. For Panasonic, the Lumix 14mm f2.5 is a great little compact lens especially for the smaller Lumix cameras. The Leica options are quite excellent, even though I have only used the 12-60mm f2.8-4.0, 25mm f1.4 and a recently acquired 9mm f1.7. There are so many lenses and cameras to choose from, and although I have formats larger than MFT, I don't feel like using them as much due to the size and tech MFT offers.

Really happy to see your love for the M43 system & hope it helps your back issues Leigh. For my travel pics it’s a no brainier. If you haven’t already purchased the 90mm macro then I’d seriously consider the 60mm version which is also an amazing lens but much smaller and cheaper & doubles as a portrait lens .. then again that 12-45 lens does double up well as a semi macro .. so many lens choices with this system.
@GLu-qc6vn14 күн бұрын
Well said. ... Re the 12-45, it also works well with "weigh nothing" macro lens tube extenders to improve its magnification... though these are more hassle than shooting with a dedicated macro lens, of course. I use the Zuiko Digital Four Thirds 35mm macro lens made for the earlier Olympus E-Series cameras. With an M43 adapter, it's cheaper than the m.zuiko 60mm used, and has significantly better 3D pop, likely due to having no ED lens element. AF functions flawlessly on my OM5 and E-P7. It's magnification is 2X in full frame terms, same as the 60mm. Disadvantages: With the m43 lens adapter it's 22 grams heavier than the 60mm, and doesn't allow as much distance from the subject, for equal magnification. f/3.5 not 2.8. Not weather sealed. It's my first macro lens, and I paid usd $117 for it, including tax, and shipping cost from Japan to the US. I found a low-cost high-quality adapter, I think on Amazon, with electrical contacts and full AF functionality made in China, which was the same price as other "merely manual focus" adapters and far cheaper than used Olympus model adapters. Dimensionality or 3-D pop is a key part of my photography style. Otherwise I'd eventually buy the relatively flat 60mm instead (In my perception, the 60mm shows modest pop in macro shots, and very little in regular shots). The 90mm 3-D pop is phenomenal, but I'd rarely want to carry so much weight and length (if it were low cost, I'd buy and carry it sometimes). By the way, even though it has ED elements, the 12-45mm shows fairly good pop in many but not all photos. More than I'd expect from its lens design. (See unique YT Channel, "Dirty Photography Club" for deep dives, scientifically and aesthetically based, in 3-D dimensionality. Tip: view it at increased speed) My 3-D pop opinions come from viewing 1-200 of photos from each lens - both macro and regular shots - and analyzing various aspects of the photos' subject dimensionality and "separation not due to bokeh." - Gary

The OM-5 has become my favourite camera. |t's a joy to use and sadly often overlooked. Plus it's a sexy beast which is rare in the world of modern camera bodies. If you have a spare $60 and want a fun lens to add to the kid, buy the TTArtisan 25mm f/2 - It's manual focus and based on an old-school lens design but it's tiny and gives such a cool look to your pictures (and camera). It's sharp but lower contrast. It gives a slight warm color cast that gives your shots a retro vibe without post processing/filters. For the price you can't go wrong.

Great choice for a simple do it all camera that's compact and lightweight! If you are interested in exploring the Starry Sky AF, consider getting/borrowing one of the fast wide angle m43 primes available. Definitely check out this lens and see what you think of it. For bad backs (I have one too!) the Panasonic-Leica 100-400 offers the smallest telephoto zoom setup I have ever seen. I have the older version 1 of this lens, which has a stiff zoom, though it is quite sharp. I've heard the updated version is much better. I love my Nikon gear, but when my back is bothering me I reach for the micro 4/3 kit every time. Another fun feature to check out is the live composite feature for doing star trails or streaky clouds. Hope you enjoy your OM5!

The Pro lenses are heavier than some MF3 lenses but the quality is top notch! I also have the 150-600mm lens, but that stays in a separate bag for specific outings. I didn't keep the Leica 25mm (mark II!), but sometimes miss it because it is much smaller than the Olympus 25mm. Unfortunately I don't have such recommendations for zoom lenses in the system, none really convinced me. But I haven't yet tried the Leica-branded zooms from Panasonic.

Be careful with the power switch, which has a historical design fault often causing the camera to not turn off, so the battery runs down whilst it's out of use. The build quality is somewhat compromised on this model, but you're sure to have fun with it anyway.

With the OM1ii, did you find the thumb grip comfortable? I've been looking at this camera and the Fugi Xhiis and like them both but found the thumb grip on the OM1 to be too big and uncomfortable. How did it feel in the hand to you?

Suggested lenses: 17mm f1.2 40-150mm f2.8

And the lighter 40-150 F4. I have the F2.8. the F4 version is possible.
@gp6367Ай бұрын
@@oneeyedphotographer Yes but f4 doesnt accept teleconverter. If you combine f2.8 with 1.4 teleconverter you get 420mm 35mm equivalent

@@oneeyedphotographer Yes I know but I still believe a 2/.8 is better option

As a landscape photographer I'm curious how good the resolution would be in a 16x20 print if the OM5 was shot in Hi-res mode on a tripod. I've been talking myself out of buying this camera for over two years. Now that I'm in the over 60 crowd that GFX50R is getting a little heavy in the backpack. You did a great job on this video and the previous one on the OM1. I really want to see your landscape prints from this camera.

I think you are unlikely to see a difference. The only need for more pixels I can see is for cropping. I own and use a Lumix S1R, 47.3 megapixels, 187 in-camera high res. With either you can pan. Earlier this year I used an E-M1x and 60mm macro lens to make an ultrawide* photo of a tree. It was about three, possibly four layers deep and similarly wide. Why that lens? It was on the camera. No tripod? The camera and lens are both stabilised, no tripod needed. * The photo wasn't ultrawide, you would ordinarily use an ultrawide lens for the perspective changes getting close gives.

What happened to your love of the SL-3? Your pet Jaguar will be so sad. ;-) So happy you found a camera that works for you!

Ha! I do love the Leica SL3. However, I do still own the SL2 and the OM-5 required a much smaller investment. I think Jaguar understands. ;)

I'm curious, other than size/weight/cost, what would make you prefer the OM-5 to the OM-1?
@oneeyedphotographerАй бұрын
I own the OM-5, price was a concern at the time. Unless you see features in the OM-1 II that you will use, get the OM-5 for much less and a couple of hundred grams less weight. You can't combine the computational features, so it's Live ND or HiRes or Live Composite or focus stacking etc. This has four stops of live ND, the OM-1 has six, I think. It also has live ND grad, but I think people who use ND filters don't know what they're doing.

For best results with both of these lenses to prevent defraction problems with these two lenses do not go past f/8 for best results.

I would like to get a step up to my old E-M5ii with the OM-5, but I have seen many people talk about the tripod thread being so easy to break which makes me question the durability of the product.
@LeighAndRaymondАй бұрын
I haven't experienced any issues with the tripod thread.

Firstly, it would be great to see how this system performs with astro photography and look forward to a video on that. I have seen a lot about this system and the gear and performance do look very good....but - that very small sensor worries me. I shoot Fuji which is APSc and is very good, but what is it tha made you want to add a 4/3 system to your armoury? I like to crop where needed and fear that a 20mp 4/3 sensor would be counter productive...love to be proved wrong!!
@bingbong48482 ай бұрын
You will only notice the smaller sensor if you compare it to the next big sensor. I use both M43 and Fuji apsc. The larger sensor handles the noise a bit better but that's physics I guess. With the right lenses M43 is fine even in low light. I've used for weddings. You have to work a bit harder in low light and when editing, but it is what it is. Oh and you get 2x focal length compared to 1.5x with apsc so in theory less cropping haha. A M43 400mm lens is giving you 800mm full frame reach. That's wild. The ibis in Lumix and Olympus cameras and lenses is as good as it gets. And they're built pretty tough. For astro, look into Starry Sky AF on the OM cameras. And Live ND is also pretty cool. So overall the final image quality may not be as great as the bigger sensors, but the little things can add up to make the compromise not that bad.

I have larger cameras with larger sensors and I use them often. I added the OM-5 because of it's small size and how much Raymond and I both enjoyed using it. Any time I find a camera that inspires me to get out and take photos, I know I'm on to something. Plus, as a creator, I consider what viewers want to see. I've gotten quite a large and positive response from viewers on my OM SYSTEM videos so it's definitely worth exploring more so I can make more videos about it!

The funny thing is that... If you show clients and fellow photographers these great Photographs you took.... NOT a single one would say ow I dont like the image quality, you probably took it with m4/3 ahahah. NOT a single one... Happy you manage to find a system that still allows you to enjoy photography + benifit your back too hehe. Keep healthy. THanks

The problem of fullframe manufacturers is that, there is no equivalent in 150-400 tc in full-frame or even APS-C cameras.. If there would be "150-500 mm f4.5 + x1.4 TC", for example for sony e mount, for the 50% of the price of 150-400, I think OM system could have a serious problems.
