| My Nigerian Airport Experience |
For those of you who have followed me for many years, you know that I am always ready to showcase Ala Igbo in the best possible light because I believe there are already enough negative stories out there. However, today, I need to make my voice heard about something that has been disturbing me for a very long time-the airport experience when coming to or leaving Nigeria.
I have been coming to this country for the past 16 years (almost annually) and have had similar experiences, whether in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, or Enugu. From being asked for money by staff to excessively showing travel documents and facing unnecessary delays, passing through airports is simply frustrating for travelers. My experience when leaving for Ethiopia recently was no different.
Let me be clear, I am not trying to criticize without a constructive purpose. My aim is to advocate for improved standards that will benefit everyone. Let’s make sure that people remember their smooth and pleasant travel to Ala Igbo and carry positive memories with them. Because this will be part of the story they will share to the outside.

I can understand how you feel our our wife,me I constantly experience the same problems as you whenever I travel both in Nigeria and in Europe and the States,in 1999 I remember vividly till date transiting from Paris to Montreal, I was searched like I was a criminal and they keep coming in groups of 3 or 4 to search me where I was sitting and waiting for my connecting flight, especially with Nigerian passport at the time. We Nigerians get disrespected by the airport authorities in and out the country. We feel your frustration.

My dear, you are a very strong woman, I admire your courage. Nigeria is just a Banana Republic. Some of you don't think of visiting home because of this experience you just shared. I have been out of the country for over 17 years now, and with this kind of thing, I don't know what to expect. Am From NSUKKA in Enugu state. God will help us.

I have travelled through many airports in my lifetime and I can confirm that Lagos airport is the worst I have even been, by far. To the point that I now travel through Cotonou when going to and out of Nigeria. It is disgraceful!

Nwanyi-ocha, thanks for your sincere observations and advice. That is how many airport staff in Nigeria misbehave thereby discouraging tourists.

You made a very judicious observation. I hope the minister of aviation is listening and will do the needful. Thank you for your courage and concern for a better Naija.

Inappropriate questions about whether you can cook, is simply a product of poor, or lack of, training.

You said the truth. Something needs to be done about the many checks. There is over staffing in Nigeria’s airports. If you compare the numbers of government agents in Nigeria’s airports with similar size airports in Western countries, you will agree with me.

Your comments are spot on. It starts from the top. When the head is rotten, everything else follows.

I’m rarely approached when I visit. My husband blocks anyone who comes my way and does all the communication. And if they reach me I pretend not to understand or speak English 😂. They give up each time .

You're correct. The last time I was home with my Nigerian passport, the immigration officer was asking me about where am i going to stay during my visit to my own country. I told him he's out of line asking me for my residence. I told him that if i wants to sleep on the street or under the bridge, that's my business . He got angry until his boss calmed him down not until asking me Oga, what did you bring for us. Very annoying. Nigerian will get better, but not with this generation.
