Thanks for sharing your story! I have an MBA and an MS in data science. What really prepared me to excel in those programs was my music/philosophy BA. Thinking and analyzing are imperative in the liberal arts. That's why arts and sciences are coupled together. I still reference my logic (philosophy) book when coding in python.

Hi Ohema! I'm so glad i bumped into your channel and I really enjoyed watching this video. I'm a recent graduate and 2 years into the jon market in Kenya. I am, quite like you were, already disatissfied with what the job market here has to offer and i would like to change careers. I graduated with a degree in statistics though i don't quite remember much of what i studied because i haven't been able to apply much of it at work. All this to say that God willing, one year or a few months from now, I will come back to this comment with an update on my self taught DA journey! I am really excited to learn and grow and i'm hoping for the absolute best! I will not let the fear of learning new things intimidate or slow me down😊

Great video and very encouraging! Like yourself, I have no background in tech. It’s also been 15+ years since I’ve been in college (100 credits, no degree). As a single dad I’m looking to change careers with the hopes of working from home. I’ve always had a passion for stats and graphs and analyzing but there’s two things I fear about this potential change. I’m not very good at math and I’m unsure if I’m capable of learning things SQL, Python, Tableau… do you have some brief insight on either? Like how much math is involved and what kind? Also was it difficult to learn this new language that allows you to be a Data Analyst? If you have a moment, any insight would be greatly appreciated!
@ohemanae2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Thank you for watching. I am happy you could take something from this video. Also, Happy belated Father’s Day 🎉🙌🏾 Regarding your questions, if you have to work with any kind of math as a Data Analyst, it is usually statistics. The amount of math involved as a Data Analyst does definitely depend on your team. My current team does not involve much stats in our work. Like you, I am not the best at math in general but you can definitely learn regardless, like myself 😊 Also, for me, it was not very difficult to learn Python because I could always go to Google when I got stuck 😅 Think of it like this: when you are learning something new, it does not just take a day or 2 to learn & even once you feel as though you understand it more, you still do not know every single thing about it. You will continue to learn more about it the more you interact with it overtime. You build upon your knowledge little by little. I kept this mindset the whole time I was learning different softwares/languages as a Data Analyst. I also have a video on the way where I talk about the different resources I used to help me in my Data Analyst role. Please stay on the look out for it. Also, please remember that you are capable of learning anything & I mean that… I hope this helps 😊

Hi, I have a degree in Business Administration with concentration in Management. I am currently in Customer service and been in the role for many years but I want a change and actually enter a career. I was intrigued with business/data analysis and becoming an analyst. But I do not have any experience in those roles and wanted to know what is the best way to get your foot in the door?
@ohemanae2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brittney, Usually, jobs just want to see that you are capable of doing the actual work before they hire you so to get your foot in the door, I would say to look into an internship. That experience can actually help you land a full time entry role. In the meantime, learn as much as you can about the different tools/softwares data analysts use. This way, when you land your internship, you can continue to build on top of the foundation that you already set. This video talks about some of the skills I needed to learn as a Data Analyst: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGXcqWuOd8eHeLs This 2nd video shares some of the resources I learned from: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3_ZgqmMmtCEmKs I hope this helps.

I like your unconventional path to the profession of data analytics. I'll be graduating next year and would want to learn from someone who is an expert in this industry. If you have the time to mentor me, I would be grateful. If you don't have the time, a few pointers and advise on how to excel in this sector would be greatly appreciated.
@ohemanae2 жыл бұрын
Hi Scholes, Thank you 😊 Unfortunately right now, I do not have the bandwidth to mentor but yes, I do not mind providing you a couple of tips that helped me: Look into getting an internship as a Data Analyst to get your foot in the door & get some hands on experience. Since you are graduating next year, see if you can intern this summer. The tools & programming languages you will use do depend on your specific team but I have used SQL & R in the past as well as Tableau & Power BI for data visualization tools. Also, I use a lot of excel as well. For Data Analyst roles, most jobs would like you to know R or Python. You can learn some of these skills in a certification course or even here on KZbin. I hope this helps 😊

How is the starting salary for Data Analysts? Google is a bit hit/miss with some misleading numbers, and I'm looking to move on from my current Helpdesk/Desktop support. Looks like SQL and Python are mostly sought after and I do have some experience with them but I think I need to have some projects on a website? I know how to create a website in AWS but unsure about Cloud Engineering due to wanting better work/life balance than being on call every third week and resetting passwords at 1AM.
@ohemanae2 жыл бұрын
Although the salary amount does depend on the company, location, past experience, education (if required), etc, I will say that the average starting salary is between $60K-80K. I gave a range because again, it does vary greatly based upon the above. Yes, many Data Analysts use SQL & R or Python. Regarding your question about the website, do you mean that you would like to learn more about those skills online? If so, I think that would be a great idea to acquire more knowledge about these skills.

For an example, as a Data Analyst, we use SQL, Python or R, Tableau or any data visualization tool, excel, etc. These are just some of the skills I would focus on & learn more about if you want to get an entry level job as a Data Analyst. I hope this helps.

@@amitnegi9881 Yes, some companies do have requirements for degrees but some do not. I would suggest searching online “Data Analyst” “equivalent practical experience”/or something similar as a lot of jobs out there do not require degrees, only equivalent practical experience. To get some experience, think about doing an internship or a relevant certificate to increase your chances of getting hired.
