First of all…CONGRATULATIONS!! Have a wonderful time! Don’t be stressed about the sight singing!! Trust me!! It’s only a small part of the audition, it’s extremely quick and not that difficult. As I mentioned, for the sight singing you sing on a “doo” or “ooo” or something to that effect, not solfeige so I would recommend doing a few practice examples to feel more prepared! Here are some you could try! Best of luck!! www.doremistudios.com.au/beginner-sight-singing-exercises/

Some of my friends have gotten financial aid from the school, I know one of friends is going on a full ride. I recommend applying to lots of different scholarship right now if possible and doing a few essays a week for them. But they both are musical theater based so they still had you do monologs, correct?, also, I will tell you yes you are so right about the timing of the audition,.. I have done show auditions and I’ll tell you, they absolutely suck and are too long…. I auditioned for my school musical last year in my community college (Suny Rockland) and it was the longest night ever!! 2) I auditioned for the music department in my school I’m in now (Im at Hunter which is close to NYU!!, and it was the quickest audition ever, they just had me sing one song ( I sang Far From the Home I love!!) I thought they would have had me sight sing but they didn’t surprisingly but I expected that so i practiced it a lot then told me to wait outside for a second,..(during that “second” I was PANICKIING about why they would say,..), then they called me back in and said i was approved!!!!! I also was a student there already since the beginning of the year but I just waited to do the audition for the higher track,. (So hunter has a 42 credit track and 25 credit so what I did was begin with the 25 credit track and then audition for the 42 credit track and private lessons when ai was already there,.. so since I was there anyway it was sooo convenient and literally didn’t have to travel or go out of my way for much,.. also I think since you were going for musical theater they probably had you do more because of that

Yes, I had to come prepared with a contemporary monolgue! It's so nice when they're quick and easy and yeah they had me do more since it was for musical theatre :)

Hi! I have some questions. Were they friendly? Was it a relaxed environment? I have my audition next week.
@MadisonHalla8 ай бұрын
Hello! Yes, they were friendly! The audition went by so quickly and I didn't feel overly stressed but it's difficult to gauge because I was already a little scared before I came into the room because of audition nerves 😓 Good luck with your audition, congratulations and you got this! Focus first on your own beliefs before you walk into the room and practice thoughts of "I am confident that I know my material and can sing it well" and "I have practiced as much as I can before going into the room and give up control over the rest" etc.

I’m auditioning for musical theater at Tische soon and the dance portion of the artistic review has me so nervous. Any tips?
@MadisonHalla Жыл бұрын
Since I'm assuming you don't have a ton of time till your audition, I'd recommend you focus on your facial expressions since you probably can't drastically improve your dance skills within a few months (without spending lots of time doing it). So whenever you learn a combination or practice a combination focus on smiling and telling a story with your face. This makes you so much more interesting to look at and people will be more willing to overlook mistakes! And practice smiling and looking like you know what you're doing (with your face) even when you can't remember a single move and are just standing there. I'd also recommend assuming the best will happen, even if it's difficult. You don't know if the audition will go badly and you don't know if it's going to go well so you might as well assume it's going to go well! At least that way you can cut down on some of the nerves. And something my voice teacher told me to do when thinking about an audition is to focus on truths such as "I like to perform" and "I like to dance". Whatever it is, when you think about the audition and something negative comes up, thank that thought and tell yourself "it's ok because I like to perform and I get to" or whatever truth feels best for you! All the best, let me know if you have any other questions!

hi!! i'm a sophomore trying to prepare early for college... can you explain the sight singing portion of the audition a little more? i used to play piano for several years when i was in elementary school so i know basic music reading but is that not enough? what should i do to prepare ahead of time? also, what was the dance portion like at tisch? i've been dancing for many years but i really just don't know what to expect and how i should prepare. thank you!
@MadisonHalla Жыл бұрын
Hello! For the sight singing portion we got an easy piece of music that we had never seen and had to sing it on a neutral syllable ‘doo’ or ‘ooh’ etc. It was very short and maybe had a major third as the highest jump but was mostly step-wise. You can practice by finding easy music and learning to sing it without needing a piano, I used to use Sight Reading Factory - though I don’t think it’s free. That portion was in the audition for the musical theatre program at NYU Steinhardt. I don’t know anything about the dance portion for NYU Tisch, sorry! But if you’re quick at picking up choreography you should be good - that was the issue most people ran into at college auditions. Best of luck with everything! Great of you to prepare so early!! And please lmk if you have any more questions!

Hello :) I am a junior who wants to apply to NYU Tisch for Musical Theatre in 2025. For someone who has some but not a very vast exposure to dance, what would you recommend as a good starting point, and would ballet or jazz be a better option? Thanks so much!!
@MadisonHalla6 ай бұрын
Hello! Thank you for reaching out! Personally I’d recommend anything that will be getting you doing combinations- if you can go to musical theatre or jazz classes you’re more likely to find choreographed routines taught in class. One of the things performers find difficult in college auditions is memorizing the combinations quickly so you want to get practice with that so you feel more confident going into the auditions. But if you have time for ballet you could do that as well or take a class here and there. Best of luck!!

hi! I was wondering how many acting based courses you were still able to take at steinhardt because i'm torn between that and tisch!! i'm more of a singing actor than a true triple threat but still want a good balance of acting as well as singing in school...do you have any advice?
@MadisonHalla3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend applying to Steinhardt if you're a singing actor. Tisch only has 30-minute voice lessons once a week while Steinhardt has 60-minute lessons weekly. We also have acting classes! I was actually worried about that too because if you look at the curriculum online you don't know which are acting classes because some have odd names. So freshmen year I had workshops twice a week in both semesters. We worked on acting a monologue in the second semester one and we worked on acting poems in the first-semester one which was actually helpful for acting. We also went over different exercises to relax the face and have better diction for the stage. This year I have acting the song (workshop 3) which is 2.5 hours twice a week. I also have scene acting which is 2 hours twice a week. I'm not sure what other acting classes I have off the top of my head but I know we have more!
@MadisonHalla3 жыл бұрын
So after sophomore year we also have acting the song classes and scene study classes. They also have lots of musicals/operas/clubs/etc that you can participate in to get extra practice. You also have a lot of electives you have to take so you can add more acting classes if you want! Hope this helps!

I wouldn't say it's too late! I started working with a vocal coach sophomore year and was in my first musical junior year of high school. I have voice memos of me singing freshmen year and they are TERRIBLE! But taking voice lessons and singing by myself REALLY helped! So you're going to have to work hard and I recommend taking voice lessons because that will really help! Also, you could try being in a musical, cabarets, and/or choir. My vocal coach helped me pick my auditions songs and I would recommend for practicing, don't choose very very hard songs. Pick songs that have a difficult place or that aren't all that hard so you can get better without hurting your voice.

I have a question What do you think about females singing male songs for their college auditions is it okay or appropriate to do so? Do they not like that? I’m asking because I’m alto but my voice is so deep for a female and I can’t sing high notes at all and I’m really comfortable singing songs that is usually sung by males
@MadisonHalla4 жыл бұрын
I want to say yes but you want to choose a song that the audition panel could see you playing so that they can get to know you as a performer and you also want to be able to connect to the song you're singing (which is why people are told to stay away from material out of their age range because they can't connect to it). So, I would recommend finding a female alto audition song. I found a discussion talking more about it here: talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/1425804/opinion-on-girls-singing-male-songs/ Here's also a few lists of songs you can look into: theatrenerds.com/51-audition-songs-for-altos/ www.theatretrip.com/audition-songs-for-altos/ I also have some links on my website: sites.google.com/view/mtcollegeresources/material?authuser=0 I hope this helps!
