Hi Mazzy, I first got into collecting as a kid when my dad would make CD copies of his favourite albums and pass them to me in the early 2000s. As I grew up, my CD collection grew larger and in the past 5-6 years my record collection started. I mostly buy new records/CDs but do love going through the local second hand shops, especially finding a record I've never seen or heard of before but the cover or the album title sounds intriguing so I'll pick it up, so many gems discovered that way! At the end of the day if the music is good, that's what matters! I share your passion in the music and the joy of discovering new artists, so many of which I've discovered through your whack-a-mole series. Keep up the awesome content and keep sharing your story Mazzy. The recent road trip to San Francisco was fantastic. Hopefully, I'll get to go one day! All the best from the UK ✌️

I couldn't have explained my record (I now only collect CD's, SACD's, Blu-ray Audio, etc) obsession any better. My collection(s) over the years have served as my library, photo album, scrapbook, identity and goodness knows what else. I can literally trace my life from age 3 to now (55) through the music, records and CD's that I have bought, been given/gifted and occasionally borrowed and my memories and feelings that looking at, holding, searching for and ultimately playing said records, etc has NEVER dimmed or dulled. It's a part of my identity and has always provided great pride and joy. Ah, but to behold the love of music...

I grew up watching my parents play records and dance to them in the living room and that’s when my obsession started. Ella, Sinatra, Dinah Washington, etc.. I love records as much today as I did as a kid. My records and the music helped me to survive the loss of my spouse A few years back . music is essential and healing.

In 1956 I was born into vinyl. My brother is 7 years older and had all the singles of the 50s and 60s, from Elvis to The Beach Boys to The Beatles to The Purple People Eater. I got my first album in 1966 (Monkees) and have been a junkie for vinyl ever since.

My first love was music. My father was a gospel singer...a bass singer with a gospel quartet. THERES A NOVEL!!!!! So, watching him perform every weekend in a different church, or stage, entranced me with the idea of singing and playing an instrument. The first records I heard were my parents records. Stacked there beside their console stereo. The first record I learned back and forth, every lyric, every note, every pop and crackle on the vinyl was my cousins copy of Magical Mystery Tour. I would sneak into his room and play it on his record player in the floor. He was 10 years older than me, he is 70 now and lives down in Florida. But, that's where my love for having my OWN records came from. And to me, its a magic memory. Its empowering to think of my little kid self sitting in the floor beside that record playing in his room and singing along with the Beatles and staring at that cover. IT IS all about the music. It is the voice of our souls.

It’s how I found John Fahey-just an interesting album cover was enough. My record store job was also the best job I’ve ever had. Records appear like a privilege but it’s the way it used to be and damn…it feels good! It certainly feels like one now as the years tick by. I am spoiled.

Hello Norman, you really spoke out of the „abyss“ of my heart. Music is the true spirit of our addiction, maybe - of course - coupled with an admiration for the well-made artwork if applicable (and a wee bit of showing- off, as our species is allegedly basically that of collectors and hunters ?). This is my first comment within the realm of the so- called Vinyl community, as I really appreciate your enthusiasm. Kind regards from Frank, a Westphalian in Berlin(Germany). P.S. Today I received Dada’s 7“ Dizz Knee Land, which I ordered after watching your road trip opener.

I hope I can say this without offense, because I also have a good amount of records collected over a lifetime, but when I saw the amount of records in the background, fear of missing out was my first thought . this guy is a reasonable fellow, so that can't possibly be the big reason for so many records, but it might be in there somewhere among the lesser drivers. I was always trying to get a better two channel record playback, so all the various other formats came and went , without much distraction, but I did buy a bunch of used records when cd's were the new thing. once it hit me that I had more records than I had time or the interest to listen to, I imposed a space limitation rule, no more records. I mostly listen to the same old stuff anyway. I didn't buy any records for many years, then fell off the wagon when I heard about an audiophile Hendrix record, and it's the old story, one more record is too many, all the records in the world are not enough. on line record buying is great, I get such cool records at the touch of a finger. although it is all too easy to run up a pretty good bill just buying only the really good, necessary, ones.

It kind of seems like Mazzy just admitted that it's not just about the music, stupid. There's something distinctive about the vinyl record as an artifact. Sometimes it is about having this thing you can actually hold in your hands. I don't like those people who criticize collections. It feels like what they're really saying is that I don't get it, therefore no one else should do it. You may be preaching to the choir here Mazzy, but it's definitely gospel to my ears.
@richardelliott83522 ай бұрын
I think a collection criticism can be valid, when it recognizes the worth of a carefully curated collection, that could be of historical value, as being superior to say, buying one of everything that happened to come into notice. in california , their are two great estates donated to the citizens. one, from Huntington , rich from railroads and oil, has his library that attracts scholars from all the world to study the rare texts. Contrast that with the newspaper tycoon hurst, who left behind a random collection of luxurious curiosities. just a different way to slice up the fun of collecting, but criticism of collections is valid, within context.

Mazz will you be doing a video about why you're not doing a video tribute to Dickey Betts? 0:30 "The pub crawl, the English pub, the UK pub..." The Faces: the ultimate pub-culture band. Listen: *Ronnie Wood* : 'Cinderella Incidentally' "came out of a *pub session* where every sentence you said had to have the word 'incidentally' in it. Like for instance you'd say, 'I'll have a pint of Guinness, incidentally'." (The way John&Yoko said *(un)fortunately* in 1969 conversations.) *Rod Stewart* was recruited in his local *pub* . 1973, Rod with his arm around *Ronnie Lane* shouts to the crowd after a North London Faces gig: " *Good night! we're off down the pub* ." And *Ronnie Lane* quit the band there & then on the mic with this reply: " *Too late, they're shut* ." It was *closing time* for Ronnie Lane & the Faces.

@@richardelliott8352 Funny fact (or damning, depending on outlook) to my teen crowd in 1975 was this: When riding high on a big UK hit single ' *Sailing* ', arms aloft welcoming his homeland on the prow of a ship for the promo video, Rod Stewart was actually heading the other way, declaring himself a tax exile in Los Angeles in 1975. The single milked British patriotism, there wasn't a dry eye in the house, but the album was called *Atlantic Crossing* .
