Hey little brother... I am extremely impressed with your cabin in the woods and how much work you have put into this project. Hi Russell. I'm catching up on your videos. I'm in the process of fixing my house to get out of the city here and go back to four seasons. I have almost all of the really big stuff finished. Now I'm working slowly on the rest, which is a lot yet, Headed to Pacific Northwest when I'm finished to enjoy retirement in peace, green, 4 seasons, and weather. How I miss the rain and even some snow. I'm enjoying your channel and knowing that one day soon, I too will be out of this rat race.

Nice work so far. You said about putting single wall flue pipe. You could also use what is called a heat dragon. An insert in the pipe. That I think has a fan in it as well. Would help circulate the heat throughout the cabin better.

I know exactly what you mean about the heat going out the soffits! I installed my front soffit last year and put tar paper over the the rear soffit opening. My goal this year is to finish rear soffit and insulate walls and roof. Thanks for the walk thru. --Dave

I'd drill some large holes in the outer wall of the stove pipe at the bottom, and large holes at about 6 to 8 feet feet up. That will help warm up the cabin air quicker like a heat exchanger.

Those deer and elk antler u find make awesome gifts when cut up for your dogs I have a woods on three sides of our home we find them all the time people around here give them as gifts to our fur babies they never can eat or bite them off but they have a mineral that all animals love they will clean their teeth real good also

I second the idea of installing a "magic heat" in the stack for the wood stove. If I remember correct they make a thermostat kit for the fan for it so it only runs when the stove is producing enough heat for it to run efficiently. A sterling fan that you set right on the stove and operates off the heat will help blow the heat around also. You won't regret either one.

Here is some 2 cents. I see a lot of chipboard used. Chipboard must be ventilated properly or it becomes mulch. Seriously, we have done repair on houses where the house was all sealed up with the vapor barrier and interior paneling and found tons of rot. So when you finish this, make sure to ventilate. Basically make sure one side can dry out whether from humidity or water intrusion.

Hi CottageGirl. I did my plans using Google sketchup. I printed a bunch of screenshots from sketchup, then had a few pages showing the footprint of the cabin on a map, and another page listing things like 'subfloor 2x8, 16" on centre" etc. It's technically a 'hunt camp' and the rules are far more lax on those. If you feel like learning Sketchup, I can send you my design. Thanks for your comments.

Hey Joseph, hope you didn't move too far. I did a video on my solar power system but essentially they're from a company called Rolls. They're 6V each so it's a 48V system. Each battery has a100h capacity of 600Ah and 450Ah at 20h. Hope that helps.

Hi Alex. $15 to $20k. Will do a video in the near future giving all the detail of the system and what costs what. This system is way larger than anyone should really need at an off grid cabin, though.

I am really looking forward to learning more about your solar and the thought process behind it. Have you thought about productive ways you can use excess power? I've always imaged a setup for off grid where certain circuits are only activated when solar output is above a certain amount and the batteries are already charged. For example, automatically turning on electric heat inside to help save wood or an electric water heater. Seems silly to waste the solar output!

That is an excellent question. It does seem a shame to waste the excess power. I'll take a look and see if there is a device out there that would do something like that: activates a switch or something at certain power level. If I come up with something I'll let you know.

never mind, you answered the question, yes, it's a black gsd, i have a black & tan female/spayed.....lol...black ones are rare & the white because they have done their best to breed them out of existence, but there are still a few here & there!!! ty for the video, nice cabin, you just need to finish it off/insulation ect.....well done!!

ty for answering!...i also found out something i never knew from a professional dog trainer i sent my dog to, he told me before the war,wwII & before, the german military were breeding dogs to be fence runners & then they also bred the heavier dogs/gsd's to be attack dogs to bring a person down..this explains why my gsd runs my fence line & you will find a lot that do so, mostly it's the american gsd's, the thinner ones. Also, this was easy work for the gsd's because they were bred to keep sheep out of other people's fields, to keep the peace, so the shepherd just has to let the dog know where the boundaries are & the dog keeps the sheep out of that area, they do this by instinct, & some just know where to keep the sheep or goats out of naturally. They are also very mouthy-in other words they use their mouths a lot more than most dogs do, they like to nip ect. sometimes, especially when playing, but they are not trying to hurt anyone usually.(lots of kisses) i also read different breeds take a sheep down by grabbing the neck or the back quarters-depends on what area of germany they were bred from. I'm not real happy about the newer ones having the really low back quarters, they tend to have problems in their old age-they look ok, but it doesn't look natural to me. (just my thoughts)p.s. there is a book about the first rin-tin-tin, he was called strongheart, very good book called 'kinship w/all life' i would highly recommend it

I stumbled upon your KZbin channel and found it very exciting especially since for the past year I've been obsessed with finding a piece of land and building a little off grid cabin for me and my 2 daughters! Ironically, I've looked at properties around your area (madoc, cloyne, queensborough etc) not much luck so far though! I found your videos very inspiring and they kinda motivated me to keep searching! If you have any words of advice for someone just starting on this journey, I would appreciate hearing them! Hi Shachar, thanks for watching my videos and commenting. Here's two bits of advice: First, you want to search for "hunting" properties, as most properties are billed like that. Second, don't be afraid to look at smaller properties. You want to look at the land around them. If you buy a 10acre property that has 1000 acres of Crown land beside it, you have a really big backyard. The only time of year you should avoid crown land is the first two full weeks of November, deer hunting season. The rest of the year it's all yours. There are lots of properties out there like this, even as small as 1 acre and you can pick them up pretty cheap. Let me know how it goes. Cheers!

Yes you definitely have to get a building permit, otherwise they can legally order you to tear it down. It wasn't difficult to get mine, but you have to show legal access.

You can always use that water for gardening. Maybe you can find a way to filter it. (Backpackers do it everyday, albeit on a much smaller scale.)

I just can't believe that you are in the middle of no where... and needed to pull a DAM PERMIT!! I would say if you are in city, or county grounds... but rural?? Did you have to give them also a set of architectural blue prints??

Yes, it's the same process as anywhere else. There are 'unorganized' townships where you don't need a building permit, but this isn't one of them.

I was just about to ask about this. How can you have 180 acres in the middle of no where and need permits? What's the point? Are the govt entities going to use an ATV to run around a bunch of private property to check on permits? And who's policing ppl bldg or living on their own land?
