Another day in the studio... In this video, I created a time-lapse of my oil painting process. Starting with the set-up, drawing and underpainting, I take you through my final layers and color palette. The painting was on an 11" x 14" gessoed hard board. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. I am about to start again. I’ve been nervous…but when I saw your Balvenie cases, I knew you would have the perfect video for me. So far you’ve had three! Balvenie is my only choice in whisky…and i also used the case for my brushes ! Loving you!

YES!!! That is awesome. Balvenie is my favorite whiskey too. Their Peat Week is unreal...pricey but unreal. Anyway, I am so glad you liked the video. Remember, every artist deep down is nervous to start a painting, especially if it has been awhile. Once you start, you'll get back into the flow before you know it. Thank you for awesome comment and thanks for watching. Best of luck and cheers! (Clinks the Balvenie!)

I love how you built up the lights and how you used thick paint at the end. The texture is amazing. My goals is to really apply thick paint at the end so I have been trying…thanks for the demonstration!

Thank you so much! Appreciate it! As you paint, try make the shadows a thinner application and make the mid-tones and highlights a thicker application of paint. As more light falls on something, the light is illuminating and clearly defining the form. So to showcase that, the thicker paint gives the feeling of more light defining the forms though the more sculptural definition of paint. And vice-versa, since the shadows are the absence of light, the thinner application of paint gives the illusion of less light and with it the lack of definition. Hope that helps. Thanks again for your time and kindness.

SICK piece. This is some extremely high level work. Love the monochrome; the greens are killer. The cut off skull cap, deep textures and super rich values here all stand out. Love your style \m/ 👌😊 -Best of luck on your art and your channel, and much support from one artist to another. -Huge 👍's up!

Very nice demo, great painting. My challenge would be the top edge of the skull against the background so it doesn’t look like a cut out piece glued to the painting. Did you blend at all this particular edge? I love all the values you used with the green. Very inspiring.

I am just overwhelmed by your warmth and investment. Thank you so much again for giving my channel an opportunity. Great question, and yes. I very slightly blurred the edge of the top of the skull so that it recedes and rounds subtly behind. How long have you been painting? What kind of subjects do you like to capture in color? Thanks again!

@@michaeljohnnolan thanks so much for your reply. I continue to learn and being careful with edges. I’m a self taught in oil painting. I love to paint in layers. I like still life, portraits, flowers. My challenge is painting a white flower. Considering white is not really white, it is by far the most challenging task. I only took one drawing class and I loved it. When I paint alla prima, I feel something is still missing. I believe if I practice, I can do it. There is so much more to learn. I have watched other videos about oil painting, but when I found your channel I am impressed how well you relate to different scenarios when painting. You make me feel I’m human and not a machine that can’t make mistakes. Every word that comes out of your mouth about oil painting is pure gold. Please continue with the production of more videos. Take care.

@@crisalidathomassie1811 Of course! Self taught is a great thing. Like Francis Bacon once said, "Now you don't have unlearn all those bad habits from art school." or something to that effect. What you paint sounds beautiful and peaceful. Speaking of the all prima, my how-to video comes out in just a few hours. I do hope you enjoy it. And you are so right, white is never white. Always push the light source color. If there is a yellow light on a white flower, then as the petal reflects more direct light, gets brighter, the more yellow light that also defines the flower, turning it yellow. Also, if the light is yellow, then the shadow is purple. Thus, the less light that directly illuminates the white petal the more you can define the white with violet. And what exists in-between is the analogous transition from yellow to purple. By the way, you are in my head, my next video is a color theory for painters. I should have that done by the end of June. I'm working hard on it now. Thanks again for all your kind words. Art is such a human connection, so it has to live there with us. I am humbled by you!

@@michaeljohnnolan omg Michael! Thanks so much for elaborating on the white color. I have asked many so called artists about this white issue. Renso sent me a blown up picture of a white rose and had me painting it to experience and see the colors and your replied is truly appreciated! Today is my day! I’m about to watch the alla prima vídeo! What a great surprise! You are the best! So much inspiration! Blessings and take care.

How long does it take to dry?

Oil paint dries to the touch usually in a few days to a week. But for oil paint to fully dry, all the way through, it can take up to a year.
