Michael Bay does destruction and chaos better than almost any director. His stories aren't great but he takes element shots of destruction and makes them look fantastic. He is a technical master, it's not easy to do way he does. He's no autheur but Hollywood doesn't commission him for that. He also has a wicked respect for his crew, almost always uses the same crew cause they can keep pace with him. That said i understand why he's a bit of a scale goat for bad directors but he deserves some credit.

I'm an editor and part of my job is solving the countless problems that surface from the transition of a film from paper (script) to print (production). Almost nothing works out entirely as envisioned and this can be both a curse and an opportunity to elevate the content. Some of the best films shot have similar problems coming together as even the trashiest reality tv show. The magic really does come down to the edit, because it's last stop before screening and you have the power to change everything. Great video by the way

It is always astonishing to me how much has to be cut in such productions. In the end the viewer judges the final result, but when you realize what had to be done to get there it can change your point of view. Similar when I'm composing but fortunately I can record stuff anytime. Just amazing!

I'd like to see more of these in the future, it's a good way to think about adapting and using mistakes to still get a good final product. It's interesting to see the challenges that any and every film set has to face at one point or another.

4:06 I noticed this in the film, but I wanted to bring this up because you didn't mention it in the episode. With the VFX smoke, it appears you (i assume accidentally) masked part of the smoke away. If you look to the left side of the screen as the smoke drifts that way, it gets cut off in a box shape. It's feathered so it blends relatively well, but It's still clear that it shouldn't be like that. I just felt like bringing that up. It was still a great film, I loved it!

Boy, all this sounds familiar! Just finished producing my first 10 minute short (producer credit) and we ran into so many issues in the editing room with jokes and story points not working. We had to change things around, and our editor did a bang-up job with it! But you are right - it can be super discouraging to see the original script not working with the edit, but you have to get in there and play around with what you have - there is always something that can be done! That's why we're creatives! Great advice!

Hey Ryan, been watching you for years and its been awesome watching your production values climb higher and higher. Do you have any plans to create more narrative shorts/dramas rather than butt-of-the-joke sketches? I know they take considerably more time to craft in terms of scripting, casting, rehearsals etc. but your film grammar and knowledge is so sophisticated that I'm sure it'd be a great watch. Really useful to hear your mistakes too, I'm always packing too much into production days but I'm sure it's an extra headache with your size of crew and limited access to locations!

I was working as a key grip on a film that was Kickstarted. We were shooting at a small airport in the Melbourne area of Australia. A LOT of mistakes were made but the worst one was when I was moving a C stand out of the way for people to walk past but they started walking sooner than I expected and I accidentally tripped a man over with the stand. Different kind of mistake but a mistake still. The shoot was extremely stressful because of time restraints and that shit effects you more than it should.

Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you still use the mics you used to always rep. Do you still use the NTG3? Have you tried out the newer NTG4 and 4+? What about cardioid or hypercardioid mics like the NT55 or the Audio-Technica AT4053b. I was looking into getting a mic for my film dialogue and didn't know what to get and whether to get a shotgun or a cardioid or hypercardioid. Thanks!

You could have just shoot the "boots" and people running in one shot, one scene. So, Josh is still walking to the right, but the townspeople are running to the left. The camera is still focusing on Josh's boots. I think that would be simpler and still would nail the effect.

HEY, Ryan i just want to ask a question about anamorphic lenses, the moment i got to know about this I was amazed by the kind of look it creates. so, its great to see you working with anamorphic more these days. Now, I have a simple question which you might find kinda stupid as well, Is it possible to shoot with an aspect ratio of 16:9 using anamorphic lens? or is it like that, anamorphic lens only creates 2.39:1 ratio? Please, reply I am a bit confused...

It's better than the dreaded... Reshoots! While watching this latest short I just kept thinking how polished everything looked. You're able to achieve a professional quality on a shoestring budget and with a tiny crew, (who are in the sketches!) I wish I had the money to finance an entire movie, if you ever kickstart or patreon a project I'm in for a high tier. Can't wait to see what you do next.

16:9 is still widescreen. 4:3 is fullscreen.
@filmriot
@filmriot 7 жыл бұрын
+Scott Sullivan Unless you are watching this on a 4:3 monitor, no. That's very dated thinking. Full screen is exactly what it sounds like - when the image covers the entire screen. And since the vast majority of monitors/televisions are now 16x9, that would be full screen. 4:3 would have black bars on the sides making it yet another crop, not full screen... Now if I said full frame, that would be different, although that is still 35mm and a 3:2 aspect ratio. (Just an FYI to hopefully help, as I don't think you meant it this way - but adding "hahaha" to an attempted correction comes off a bit arrogant.)

No. Get a Canon SL1. It's the same price as a t3i but better quality. The only thing you're missing is a flip out screen. But if you're a serious filmmaker you'll want to use a tablet as a monitor for it anyway. Spend a little more and get the Panasonic G6. You can connect to Wi-Fi so you can use your phone as a monitor so the cost is the same

Film Riot yay! Also, it's super cool you responded. I have watched you guys for like forever😂 And can you make another superhero type effect? But with more ambitious camera work? I have always wanted to make my films about super heroes have that but I don't know how to approach that without messing up the effect. I want to direct a more cinematic type of feel with the súper hero films like in the X men films or marvel. ( but I think something more along the lines of legend of tomorrow or the flash.) On another note, a dr strange effect could be a really good idea that could probably be done in after effects. Idk about the mirror world or whatever but yeah. Sorry that was so long lol thanks for the time.
