There’s a lot of fetishisation of Japan in this comment section but I guess it’s to be expected. If anyone is under the belief that Japan is a magical land where the people are pure and always wholesome just remember real life isn’t an anime and it’s not healthy to think this way!

Okay, but just because a certain group of Japanese people looks happy and open-minded, doesn't mean that all are. There are many nice and open-minded Japanese people, and there are people that are the opposite. It really depends on the person, their environment, and their personality. You can't really generalize a whole culture just from one group.

Hi, I am going on exchange in 2 months or so, so I know a bit about getting started with it. What I did was I first talked with my parents about what their opinions about me going on exchange were and if they would be willing to support it. Then, I worked with them to figure out the costs and to make sure it could be covered. Then, the next most important thing is talking to your school and seeing what you are able to do as far as credits go. Since I am going for a year long exchange, I had to make sure that I would be able to get all of the credits I needed so that I didn't graduate late, because my school is not giving me credits for my time abroad. Next, you do some research on which program you would like to go with, which there quite a few but some applications may be closed or limited due to covid. Then, you apply to the program you would like to go with and go from there!
