Mickey Redmond is the best. I saw him wearing pajamas around midnight a few years ago at a Meijer (Michigan's Walmart) looking at gardening equipment. I had to do a double-take. I just waved to him and he waved back. Legend.

Daryl Reaugh is criminally underrated. As a Dallas fan who still remembers being new to the sport well (started watching heavily in 2016) I will always appreciate his mixture of comedy with easy to digest hockey knowledge. He made the sport seem so intuitive, the rules were easy to grasp, he just makes you feel like you’re there and know exactly what’s going on. He’s so good at his job. Really wish he could have done the Winter Classic broadcast in 2020 so the rest of the hockey world could get a taste. If your team is ever playing Dallas and you can get that broadcast, i can’t recommend it enough.

Must have been 10 years ago now, but there was a game Mickey and Ken were calling between Det and Nsh. Datsyuk carries it in on the left wing and turns to the boards to protect the puck, Weber shoved him off it. Puck comes back to center and it goes to Datsyuk again. Mickey goes, "Go ahead, give it one more try." Datsyuk brings it over the blue line on the left wing again and Weber comes in to push him off again and Datstuk judo checks HIM into the boards, setting Mickey into a histerical laughing session. "You who used to do that? Gordie Howe." 🤣

Yeah, Mickey does an amazing job of keeping things level when he's on. He'll often criticize the officiating whether it's for or against us, and compliments good play from either side. And Ken Daniels is just great to listen to. He's even done broadcasts for national TV games in the past a few times with NBC, and kept that same level of energy as if both teams were Detroit, which speaks to how professional he can be. Other times we also get Chris Osgood or Larry Murphy for color commentary since Mickey can only travel so far these days, and they do a good job as well. For as much as Bally Sports annoys me, like streaming quality and blackouts, the ESPN/TNT/ESPN+/Hulu broadcasts are AWFUL. Crowd noise is way too loud compared to the announcers, and their blackouts are even worse. And obviously since they can’t be biased, the absolutely random conversations about things that have nothing to do with the game is so off putting. Or they cut away from the game when the play is still going on (canes panthers OT when the panthers scored like 15 seconds in to OT and they had cut to the next game coming up after this one finished.) absolutely hate watching on ESPN

ESPN+ is the worst. They totally are biased. I watched one game on that network and it was against Edmonton. The whole game they were gushing over McDavid and D. How bad was it? My team scores a goal and instead of talking about the goal, 5 seconds after it happens they legit said, "and McDavid was on the ice when they scored, he's so incredible". I'm like wtf? Can you do anything besides Jk off over him, what are you his girlfriend or something?

@@dayman4753 That's how you can tell a broadcast is being aimed at newbies and non or casual fans, when they only talk about the star players. Call me biased but I love Jim Jackson especially when he’s with Keith Jones. Their banter and chemistry is truly unmatched. Also obviously JJ and Jonesy are flyers fans but they’re not afraid to talk about how they got away with a penalty or compliment players on the opposing team. Some broadcasts would rather drop dead than compliment a player or a play made by the opposing team but these guys aren’t like that. Also nothing beats JJ calling a goal. Also I’m glad you mentioned their intermission work I love it. Taryn, Al, and Scott do an amazing job and once again their chemistry is amazing. Even if we are the only Canadian team playing on that night, and they pretty much have no choice but to put the Jets on HNIC, they spend all the time talking about the American team we are playing. Last time I checked...the C in HNIC stood for Canada. Maybe lean a little to cheering for the Canadian team, and maybe forget that you are the regional Calgary (or whoever it is) and call like the whole country is watching.

I don't think bias is the right word. For me bias is when the commentators have double standards for refereeing and stuff like that. The Altitude guys are mostly just heavily cheering for the Avs, but at the same time at least trying to call the plays as they happened. Like being happy when the refs miss a penalty on the Avs, while acknowledging that it probably should've been a penalty. Chris Cuthbert and Gord Miller are the best play by play announcers in the game bar none. I miss the days when they’d do all the TSN broadcasts along with Jim Hughson. Grew up playing the NHL games with him and it’s safe to say I’ve never heard anyone do it better “great save luongo” or “it’s a HOWITZER” are branded into my memory. Great calls. Awesome vid Shannon - Jets Fan

I have been incredibly surprised how upbeat and fun listening to a lot of the Coyotes broadcast have been this year. I only caught a handful of their home games this year but the broadcasters managed to keep some butt whoppings light hearted

Mickey is an absolute legend! Ken Daniels does a great job but he tends to ramble at times instead of sticking with the play by play. Because of this he misses a lot of important calls. I really miss Dave Strader (RIP). He and Mickey were so damn good together, especially when calling all the old Probert and Kocur fights. We're definitely spoiled in Detroit. Great video Shannon.

Being in Detroit we have a interesting situation. I often watch cbc (channel 9) from Windsor. Hockey Night in Canada's broadcasts are pretty darn good. I will admit, even though I am perfectly fine with the decision, there is something missing without Don Cherry.

ken rambles because the team isn't very good and we'd rather listen to him ramble than talk about how bad we are

Dave and Mickey on the old PASS Sports broadcasts were great! I like Ken, he does love to point out which college a guy played for every time they touch the puck or mention how X player scored their first career goal against Detroit.

Really like Johnson and Mudryk's Habs on TSN calls, they have fun and are critical enough to make me not feel lied to. But man do I miss Bob Cole... "Oh baby".

I've found when listening to a broadcast without viewing the "Homers" clearly announce the score of the home team whereas the goal of the visitors is barely discernable. This applies to Florida and Philadelphia if not more.

I wish everyone could experience the professionalism and remarkable fairness of the French RDS broadcast. In my experience, their commentator and hockey analysts ( Alain Crete, Marc Denis, Pierre Houde, Denis Gauthier to name just a few) are some of the very best. I always learn a lot hearing from them. Lots of nuances that can only be delivered by people that have been players and or coaches. Last season, between the playoff games, their offered remarkable depth in their analysis of the game, and the ability to clearly communicate intricate topics.

I would love to see a similar video like this for the radio broadcasts. It is an old art form but as a Tampa fan getting to hear the old legend Phil Esposito react to the team he founded feels quite surreal and Dave Mishkin really puts his love for the team on display with every goal scored.

100% agree, should do a video on radio announcers. I feel like they inherently have to be better commentators since they have to describe the scene for everyone rather than relying on” well you saw what happened on the tv”. As a bruins fan who cant stand jack edwards, the radio team of bob beers and jud sirot are 100 times better. Must be cool to listen to phil espo call a game. I’ll have to check out a tampa radio feed sometime

I grew up on hockey on the radio, back in the 70's. There wasn't too much TV back then. Maybe one game a week, and only that many because I grew up in NYC and we had two teams. I'll still listen to radio broadcasts over the internet nowadays, especially since I've gotten rid of most of my pay-TV. It's fine by me because even when I have the game on TV I listen more than I watch.
