The animatronic was orginally Spring Bonnie from Fredbear's Family Diner (not an official game; just from lore and fan games) It's a springlock suit (you can retract the endoskeleton to fit inside). The "missing children" (aka the kids william killed) chased him into the suit and the springlocks were set off, giving him a slow painful death with metal going through his body. He's called Springtrap because it's a springlock suit and he was trapped in it. The reason he looks so bad is because he's gone through 30 years of decay with his corpse in it.

Actually, William did get trapped but he died due to a springlock failure. A springlock failure is when the springlock suit (In suit form), breaks (by either moisture or pressure). And if there is a human inside of it (like William), then the endoskeleton of the springlock suit impales the human inside in every single direction (including straight at the vital organs (like the heart and brain)) this amount of force is also enough to crush or break EVERY SINGLE BONE IN THE HUMAN BODY. Aaaand, that explains how William died of a springlock failure. (And how it happened)
