Of course, because you're an American who knows that violent abusive people shouldn't be let off just because they're " family". They should go to prison so they don't hurt other people. OP is Japanese. Listen, I Iived there for years and I never heard of a SINGLE case where anyone called the police on family, for anything . Fathers will abuse the kids and the mother won't call the police to put a stop to it.

Look, this is a Japanese story and the Japanese don't call police on family. Lived there for years and never heard of a single case where a family member called the police on another family member. Even if a father is abusing his child in front of the mother she WILL NOT call the police to stop it. There are laws against abuse and assault but nobody uses them so they're what a friend of mine calls "paper laws".That is, they exist on paper but like paper tigers, have no power in the real world. Even if you go to "consult" with the police they'll direct you to a " Women & Children's Bureau" which gives advice. Someone I know got advice on how to please her husband so he won't get violent again. She got freaking recipes !

I don't understand how a mother can turn against their own child so badly. Sure, sometimes one child resonates more than another with a parent, but that parent ensures that the children are still treated fairly, if they are any sort of parent at all. So glad Marion's baby wasn't harmed by that kick.

What a life's journey of hatred and bigotry that young Marian had to endure by the hand of her own mother it even carried on well into adult good with the result of assault on her unborn child the thing is why call social worker and not the police when every thing was revealed by eye witness not sure what the writer/writers was trying to do with this area of the story if this was writen on the the US it is usually the hospital inform the police when a patient is brought in with such an injury especially assault on a pregnant woman. The story ended however, it did not come full Circle the ignorant ,evil,vile narcissist mother needed to be arrested but wait if this a US story they turn a blind eye on these things. Not a well writen story in my estimation.
