I let my parents abuse me because I was afraid to fight back, to defend myself. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have dropped kick both of them for hitting me. It doesn't matter that I was their child and they were my parents. What mattered was that they were supposed to be responsible adults, not the aggressors and abusers. Sometimes parents need to be put in their place to garner some respect. Self-defense isn't for a specific age. It's for all individuals at any time in their lives. When I was of age, I left and never looked back. They've passed away since then and I wasn't phased by it. They were strangers to me and I was completely fine with that. I'm living my happiest life with my husband.
