EPISODE #78: Ted asks about pastors who aren’t overtly preaching legalism, but aren’t focused on the Gospel, either. Rod talks about how the law is in us sinners by nature, and the Gospel isn’t and sounds strange to our ears and is harder to accept, and the seduction of using our improvement as a ‘test case’ proving the truth of the Gospel.

Great episode!! it confirmed what I have been thinking, that many pastors preach in such a way that perfection in the Christian life is implied

So good to see Dr Rod haven’t heard him since, what drove Luthers hammer talk, and it’s good to finally see his son I heard about through several of his talks about 1517 through the years ,I just stumbled on here and was pleasantly surprised.I’ve been listening to a lot of R C Sproul lately on his Ligonier app and Dr Rod & R C were always my favorite speakers about Christ and scripture, here where I live in Tennessee there’s a church on every corner but really no where to go to hear of Christ’s finished work and His righteousness given freely to us preached into our ear balls as Dr Rod would say,I want to belong to a church but it’s like looking for real water in the desert all you find are mirages that look like water till you get close ,love your conversations and channel it is Water for a very thirsty soul.

@Irishfrost77 I'm so glad you found us and are joining us. I hope you're able to find much thirst-quenching stuff here in our channel and on 1517 across the board. We look forward to the laity getting 'addicted' to the sound of Christ crucified for their sins, and, hopefully, we see a return to the Reformation!

Best video ever. I always say the same to my evangelical friends, when they ask me ''we! legalists! no way! maybe the older generations. how do you consider us to be legalists?''. And I start to tell them about the law/gospel distinction and the total absence of free will in salvation.

Great video and I have loved watching your program from episode 1. I was a non-Lutheran for many years and been a Lutheran now for about 6 years. The light bulb came on when I started listening to the teaching of Law and Gospel and how the two don't mix. The just shall live by faith. I know that the word "improvement" is frowned upon in this context, but how should we be talking about spiritual growth in light of Romans 6 and other scriptures? I realize that improvement isn't the thing to focus on but we should focus on the Gospel and God's grace working on us. However, the scriptures do imply that God is transforming us - not that we get any credit for it, but it's reality none the less. I'm just trying to get my mind around how to talk about this. If we don't use the word "improvement" in terms of spiritual growth, then how should we speak about spiritual growth? I realize this is tricky because anytime you talk about growth it implies a scale and that leads us to comparing or judging each other. The Law is the ultimate scale, and one of which we all fall infinitely short.

@@stephenfoxx6794 We've got a bunch of books, you can go to the 1517 shop to check them out. But the alcohol is Maker's Mark bourbon.
