The Book with the flowers is a hymnbook in german. I think it belonged to Karoliene Starks(?) born Karoliene Friesen and she got it for Christmas 1902. „Weihnachten des Jahres 1902“ Her writing and the printing (in Germany) were used until WW II, round about. The foreword tells how this selection of songs came together. 🌸

Russian people were involved in the selection of the hymns... so where was the Gesangbuch printed? Am I far too engaged in your books? I love the idea of owning books for their subjective value to you.

The cyrillic sentence could read something like: Permitted according to the price/Allowed price. Odessa, 11-ro September of the year 1895. I didn't find anything useful to make sense of 11-ro... The summary of the visible foreword: This new hymn collection is for public and domestic usage. A comission appointed by the Russian Mennonits congregation collected the hymns and finished their work in 1892. Now they (the german publisher?) can finally print it. They chose the "most dignified and best songs" from the collection, while keeping the hymns of the former/first hymn book in mind. Only a few appear in both books, this way you can use both (temporarily) side by side during church service. I wonder if they ever printed a third hymn book combining the two, "Best of: Old classics and new bangers!"

@@xXbubbelXx That’s so interesting once you start digging! Now I learned that there have been a lot of german „expats“(?) around Odessa in the 19th century. And many of them emigrated to the US due to a compulsory military service where they had to serve for 6 years! Since 1871 15,000 Mennonites went to the US and Karoliene may have been one of them, right? And the flowers she could have picked before leaving home as a keepsake 🙂 Wikipedia, „Schwarzmeerdeutsche“ „Black Sea Germans“

Great video. I collect autographed books but most are under 15 years old. One of my treasures (though by no means valuable) is a little local history book I picked up at Salamanca Markets in Hobart, Tasmania. It’s about Birkenhead in England which is near where my parents are from (I picked it up for my dad). The book, Birkenhead Yesterday and Today, is signed by the author, W.R.S. McIntrye but the bit I love is the inscription inside which says, “The members of the Birkenhead Business & Professional Women’s Club send their very best wishes for Christmas to the members of the Hobart Business & Professional Women’s Club. May the year 1950 bring you all full joy in club activities”. Dated 1 November 1949. The historian and feminist in me loves that!

my dad has a book from the late 1600s. it’s in danish and is about danish kings and lore, most books from denmark in this time period is about christianity and is often in latin. so it sticks out.

Very interesting! You have a collection with many fine quality books. I share your thrill for treasure hunting. I have a miniature childrens edition of Robinson Crusoe from 1770, and a signed limited edition of Arthur Rackham’s Book of Fairy Stories from 1929, to speak of a couple that relate to your collection. @Infinite Text I translated the part of the page visible at 6:45 of the old German spiritual song book: Foreword This new collection of spiritual songs for public use and at home, which is contained in this book, has been established with God’s help. The committee that was appointed by the general Conference of the spiritual directors of the Russian Mennonite-community has accomplished the collection and had finished this work in the beginning of the year 1892, so that now its printing could commence. Various evangelical song collections were used by the committee, for choosing from them the songs for this new songbook, and considerable effort was made to discover the best and most worthy. In the first place though while with the selection the songs of the old songbook were taken into account. An initially small number of songs were taken over from the old into the new songbook, so that in the new one a good part of the old is in it, that certainly will be liked by many and it enables that for the time being both songbooks in church service can be used next to each other…

Hi! I love your video! I also get old books from second hand book shops but not as rare as yours. I'm kinda getting discouraged recently to treasure hunt since I keep witnessing my old books deteriorating (I live in a pretty humid country) and I'm worried that physical books might die on me at one point so I was amazed to see that there are opportunities to see rare treasures like these in pretty amazing condition and I'm kinda getting encouraged again. Anyways, I would like to ask. How do you store your rare books? Aside from the spine cushion, do you do anything else to preserve these? Thank you!

Rare books will have a place, it will just be among collectors, and libraries. It's interesting how many times kids of book collectors just sell them at a yard sale. Don't despair! So the #1 tip is keep your books away from fluctuation in temperature. The up and down of temperature causes humidity which attracts mold and pests (like roaches, bookworms, etc). The mold deteriorates the books. Also keep them away from the sun, don't put them in the window or direct sunlight. So if you have a library room that's more temperature regulated and potentially in a darker spot that's the best thing you can do. At this moment in my life, I've had to move so much that all the books featured in this video are in a box in my parents' basement. Granted, it's dark and cool, but ...I have no room right now.

Yup!!! Young people are certainly into rare books. And I say this as a rare book librarian as well. I see young people daily very interested. I wish there were more opportunities for both employment or to create a bridge for more young people to be invested and actively involved but the interest is certainly there
