My personal instruction of Sunroof Repair E53, E61, E83, E91

If you follow step by step, my self made instructions, you will be successful.
Always remember, the item in front is always a little higher than the item behind, so that the wind doesn’t get caught and make noises.
For pano-sunroofs: the metal roof is 0.5-1mm higher than the front end of front glass panel. Than the rear end if front glass panel sits 0.5-1mm higher than the front end of rear glass. Than the rear end of rear glass sits 0.5-1mm higher than the metal roof on rear. And so on. If they sit wrong, wind can cause noises and pushes the water through into your car.
Always remember. Almost every part is positioned in the car under this concept.

Thanks Andreas! Took the sunroof out of my brother's 2007 X3 Saturday (about 1:45), then put it on a table to replace everything. We got it all back together in about 4 hours time, the second side was completed in about 30 minutes of that time, the first side took 3 hours or so! It's easy, once you watch your video step by step while doing it in real time about 47 times! One thing to note in our kit, was that the outer channel clips that you state to break to get them out (we had two of them, one in the back and another in the front that is connected to the spring assembly), well, I wouldn't break them unless you have replacements. We broke both of them on one side, then figured out we only had two in the repair kit, but needed four of them. For the second side, we used a heat gun, heated them up a bit and slid them out the channel after releasing the top part. Took us about 2.5 hours to put the assembly back in the car, adjust the glass, put the headliner in, test it, and put all the trim back in. Thanks again! We could of not done this without you!

Thank you for the video I was able to successfully complete the repair and it is working great. One thing to note is you can stop short of removing the wind deflector parts if they're okay. I just needed to repair the front mechanism and went along with the entire video and removed the wind deflector unnecessarily and created more work. If I was paying attention I would have stopped short at that point. But thank you for such a nice guide on an important repair.

The history of this issue is a nightmare that begun with a simple upholstery task. Long story short, the guy who tried to replace sunshades suede broke all cassette components. My Dad brought me the situation and after a long deliberation I decided to repair the cassette. Once I had the cassette in my house I did the parts and shop manuals research that lead me to your video. Needless to say, your superb tutorial gave me the confidence to ride the storm. Once I repaired the cassette it was installed, and guess what, at the moment of truth (initialization), the system had no power. I had no time to deal with the electrical issue, so my father went to a technician that solve the power issue. Not having enough troubles, guess what, the technician did operate the system without initializing it firsthand. This brings me to concur with your opinion regarding system timing.

I see this is seven years old. You made a valuable resource. Thanks so much. I am having a nightmare with a 2006 E53 X5 panoramic roof. The headliner, glass and sunshades were removed to reupholster them after water damage. When the floating headliner (sunshades) were almost completely out, the mechanism was unintentionally activated and moved all the way to the rear. Amazingly, it didn't break anything as far as I can see. But, there were two "tensioner springs" that were on top of the sunshade and I cannot see how they were originally placed. They look like someone modified a couple jumbo paper clips such that there is a D shaped loop at each end. Each spring is about 3 inches long. They don't appear in the parts drawing as far as I have seen. Where do they go? I think they could serve some purpose in pushing the covering material of the rear sunshade upwards as the front one passes underneath ??? Really not sure. If you or anyone else reading this can offer any guidance please contact me. In any case, thanks a million for the guidance in this video on repairing the cassette.

This is a super video! So I have an e61, Sunroof is all working fine, but the sun shade part squeeks like crazy when part or fully closed, it is silent when fully back / open. Is there a way of servicing the shade without taking the whole thing apart? I guess it probably just has something that needs lube or maybe a bit of maintenance cleaning?

Andreas Greetings and thanks for the info. The presentation video confirms that the glass mechanic haves two timing positions. Position number one (1) is the one described in your video (sunroof cable timing position, cables are locked in place once the motor is installed) and the one in the second presentation is for the glass. I will return to the X3 sunroof project later this month or next year to conclude the repair. As this moment, the X3 is under preventative maintenance for full cooling system and general inspection. I wish I could understand German in order to benefit from posted comments.

Well, if the rear is good and only front broken, I still suggest to replace rear too. Because you have to take it out either way first to get to the front mechanic and second, the rear parts have same age like front and might will not last very much longer. I recommend it but can’t decide it over internet, I gotta see it. Check if rear parts might have some brittle ramp or fine cracks, because than the next repair is not far away.

Muthanna Akram , what you need to know? I had also animated pdf files uploaded, but the best would be, i direct you directly. Which bmw model do you have? X3, 5, or 3 or 5 touring? The mechanic of rear is easy. Just a angled plate on each side, which get pulled forward and underneath the “rear glass panel brackets”. Just tell me the problem and what you might struggle with, I will try to explain what to do.

@@AndreasinUSA Hey I have the same problem the rear panel goes up but wont come back down again, the only way i could sort of fix it was to grab a screw driver and a hammer and put the screwdriver in the holes on the ramp and use them to push that mechanism back on both sides. That then closes the rear window but as soon as it opens again it gets stuck. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks

Hi Andreas, the sunroof on my e61 520 wasn't working when I recently bought it. The sun shade works fine - opens / closes / vents. The front motor runs and spins, but there is no movement from the glass panels unfortunately. I have tried the re-initialisation procedure numerous times / cleared codes with icarsoft, but still no budge with glass. I am right in saying that the only way to access it at this stage is to drop the headliner and access the cassette to see what's broken or jammed? Also do you know if the glass on the panoramic sunroof on the E83 X3 sunroof is the exact same size the E61? I might have a donor X3 and would like to do a complete swap over if possible. Andreas, I have a non-functional sunroof on my e61. There is no communication with the sunroof control module from my bmw scanner so I am first planning to replace the module. Here's the problem, the TIS says the module is behind the glove Box but it is not there! It is a 2010 535i xdrive LCI, there is obviously an alternate module location but I can't find it. No wiring harness was cut and there were no plugs behind the glove box. The module was not near switch and the front motor. Could it be near the rear motor like on an e91. Thanks for any help or advice, I would love to at least get some power to the sunroof and find the darn module without tearing the whole thing apart!

Yes, I can operate the sunroof manually. The timing was set according to video. The sunroof performs all modes (vent, tilt, 1/2 open, full open). I don't remember the part number of the front kit but it was ordered for an a E83. I did check the length of the new cables with the old one and it was the same. At this moment I am unable to take a video of the operation because the X3 belongs to my father who lives 1:45 hrs from where I live here in the island. As a matter of fact, last night, after writing you, I mentally review the whole process and conclude that this problem could be due to improper glass alignment, just my hypothesis. Please take notice that I am not a auto technician. At this moment the X3 sunroof and sunshades the should be closed (I did manually close the sunroof yesterday). Guess I would have to wait a few weeks in order to be able to take a video and send it to you. I deeply appreciate your attention to this matter. Thanks you.

Andreas, Great video. Thank you. I am fully rebuilding the E83 X3 cassette using BMW parts for the front glass, rear glass and the sliding sunshades. I have good mechanical training but I have an impasse. I have replaced the parts for the sunshades first. Moving it manually by the cables, it appears to be good. The rear panel sliders drop into the slide sections so that the front panel can be on top. But, I have two parts remaining (right side and left side) and I cannot determine where they fit. They are about 3 inches long with a 3 mm post at one end, and a wedge shape at the other end. Is it possible to send you an image so you can look? As they say, no good deed goes unpunished and I am reaching out to see if you can advise. Thank you.

Thanks Andreas, great video, my X5 E70 makes a crackling sound in the sunroof motor and can only lift front window up or down and only left side but nothing else. The shade is in open position and stays there, I did the reset but it only makes this crackling sound. What would you suggest? :0(

Thank you for the video. You seem very familiar with these sunroofs. I have an e61 and despite clear drain hoses, there is water still running into the rear boot side compartment above the battery. Would you know why this is happening? When I pull the headlining down it looks like one sunroof channel runs out to the drain hose but one seems to just overflow and run into the headlining and down into the boot

Few things you have to look into: first, if you have still warranty by bmw, visit a cert dealer ship, they fix it. Now: how they do it, you can do it too. Make sure all 4 hoses are connected to the roof. Each corner has a hose connected. The front runs through the A-Pillar, the rear through the D-Pillar. The rear hoses are short and running from each rear corner of the roof and coming out under the Trunk lid (X1,X3,X4,X5,,X6,X7) or all the way to underneath the car. These hoses have a “anti-Gurgling noise rubber end attached “. It’s a small rubber piece which is squeezed together attached to the end of hose. Usually it will be cut of, because it can clog up by leaves. You can also lower the rear headliner and clean the rear end of the water drain channels and the hose with air pressure. That is the standard reason and way to make it drain again and better. But it last only until it clogs up again from leaves/dirt when driving in fall with open roof. The wind pushes all dirt to the rear. But you can also install a “Net/Filter” into both rear ends of the roof. It’s a plastic piece, which should be available at every bmw dealer ship. You must lower headliner on the rear end to install. It just clips into position and its made for all roofs. But if you have the roof already out of the car, I can tell you my own version of how to guide the water so it stays in the water channel. But that is not official but it makes sure the water runs where it supposed to. Because when the rear ends or hoses are clogged up, the water level in the sunroof water channel rises and climb above the 3mm high walls into the channel where the sunshade drive cable runs through. And than it travels in these channels towards the corner and runs out into your rear r&l boots where electronics sits. Let me know, i can help/explain it to you. Because when the roof is out of car, first clean it and clean hoses, than dry and increase the wall with a piece of plastic (estimate: 2 pieces 20x100 mm long) and glue/seal it onto the 3mm wall using silicone or the windshield glue/seal. I would first clean rear end of roof (open roof completely) or take rear glas out to reach both rear inner ends of roof. Use air pressure for hoses. And cut off the gurgling valves. That helps , but doesn’t prevent 100% from coming back. Install the filters/nets increase the time to next clean up . It all depends when and where you have roof open (fall, trees). And try not to park face up in drive way or one side up , both on a strong angle. Because this causes the rear ends or one side being used by the water to drain out. Hoses are on each corner and can handle up to 10 liter per minute. If you park for example always car face up, only the rear must handle all the water. And open the glass in every position and clean each glass around the sides and the glass seal , attached to the body . This reduces the water to come in, when roof is closed. Water will always dripping through the sealed roof, that is why there is a water channel built into the roof. You find it easy, because its usually the dirtiest channel when you look into the roof from the top, while open. The channel is a U-Shape channel. Starting on rear side and runs below the seal towards front, than to the other side of the front end and back to the other rear. I hope that helps a little to understand the way how it works and how to take care of water coming into car. You an clean the channels by using a old rag and a long stick, and wipe through the water channel starting on rear and pull dirt out to the front. Don’t do opposite way, because you will add more into rear end and clog up more. If you like my answer please client in like, and if it’s not enough or you don’t like it, let me know, so I can try to help you more, especially when you have the roof out of car. Because this is my idea and i did it with 100% success only on few cars. But it is not official fix, it’s my personal way , since I worked on several thousands of sunroofs and problems and that for many years. Some USA BMW dealers remember me and my sunroof repair training, I performed all over the US between 2009 and 2012. Maybe ask and I hope they do. Because if so, they should know how to help you. The training was named:Panoramic Sunroof Repair SB019. They got certified from my side after the training. Each US dealer should have 2-4 people who were trained from my side. Tell them my best regards, they are great and helpful people. They have also received a book if how to repair roofs. I made that and explain drain channel/water channel in this book too. Just in case you can’t find it. I am here to help, I loved that project /job , that is why I still help. I also trained other sunroofs of different sunroof companies , like Webasto and ArvinMeritor. You have an Inalfa-Sunroof. The sunroof information is on a label, attached to the roof on front center. To to able to read it, you have to unclip the control center in front top, where the sr-switch and interiors lighting is installed. I think I stop writing now and wait for your answer. _c_d_c I made a public reply on your question. Please check, it’s long and I guess I am not so familiar with KZbin, otherwise I would have replied to you directly. Sorry. Question: do you park your car in a higher boardwalk or face uphill in your driveway or anywhere else ? Because this is not recommended on all sunroofs of this model. Try to find all valves (4- on each corner one) and take off the squeezed ends, named valves. They might don’t open appropriately to let water run through. Only needed for gurgling noise reduction. Let me know when you have the roof out of the car, because I explain you a “unofficial way “ to guide the water out and protect the cable tracks from getting water into. Because that is the reason why it dripping into your trunk boots. The trunk boots don’t let water drain out. Maybe a small hole in the lowest level of each boot can help, that the water can drain out at least. Did it before, electronic can handle water but not when drown under water.

Following your timing instructions, it occurs to me to test the system by unpining the rear glass mechanic and reinitializing the system, since the rear glass is an slave of the front. If the system performs all functions there should be no problem installing the pins. Am I correct?

I'm using Wurth True Glide on the rails and moving parts, but have read conflicting reports on the cables. I'm rebuilding the sun shade mechanism as well and, after cleaning the tubes, they still seem very tight. Thanks.

The True Glide is perfect to use. I used a brush to apply the grease, after cleaning. You can use a little for the cable. I put some grease into my hand and than pulled the cable through. The cable suppose to be soaked in special oil already, but extra grease is good. Sorry for the late answer. I had PC issues and couldn't check the website frequently

William Thompson William Thompson Würth true glide is the right one. Usually the cables are soaked in oil before assembly. But a little grease can’t hurt. But if the cables are tight, maybe add grease to the sliders of the shade and mechanism. The rear shade has 4 white sliders and the front bigger and black one. Also the sliding mechanism of the grill between both shades. Add also a little grease (brush it) into the plastics (named drop box) in which the rear shade fell into, when open the shades. A thin layer of grease, because if you do to much, it might be visible in summer time heat, when the grease gets softer. Always use brush for the grease and clean the guides throughly before greasing.

I broke both rear rain gutter brackets (14:45 in your video). The tabs snapped off. Is there any way to salvage them? Do you know where I can find replacements? Thanks.

I think there's a repair kit with these parts inside. You can get them at every BMW Dealership, but make sure you tell them Car Model, Year and information of Sunroof. This info is located on front middle. Removing the inside light part, you can see a 12inch long label on the front beam of Sunroof. May make a photo of all information. Or at least write down the IRS number, or SR number and the "TLL" number. Because the parts you need changed and older version do not fit into newer roofs and the opposite. I think, these parts are even available in a set (2x right, 2xleft -(top+bottom parts) usually in a bag. They also should come with the Glass Panel repair kit, since you need to replace them every time you repair the glass mechanic. Because you have to break them to get them out to remove the mechanics for glass. The kit should come also with 4 springs, which push the top part up towards glass. So: 6 parts in one kit, but make sure the TLL number fits the part you need. Its a very often to order part since it needs to be replaced every time you repair a roofs mechanic. Installing them is easier, when you push them in place not straight down, but more in an angle. Like 45 degrees towards frame, than set them straight and push in place. You have to hear both clips clipping into frame, otherwise they stay loose. You can see if clips are clipped in by using a flashlight to look into frame from the top down and from right above these lower Drain Channel Supports. If you see the clips still not clipped in, use a small screw driver to push them in . I think my video shows you that. Let me know if all ok or if there is still open issues with your Roof. Andreas

We can not get the rear moonroof visor to the front when the front visor moves forward

It seems to stuck, because the two small plastic arms attached between both are broken or the end stops in the rear roof came out of position. You need to remove the sunroof out if the car to fix it. It is possible to do that while roof is still installed, but this is very difficult and you need to know a lot of this roof and it’s functions before you can do that. Easy when it’s out of car. Repair Kirs are available at usually every dealership of BMW

I am having problems to close the sunroof automatically. After initializing the sunroof it doesn't close totally, it leaves like a 2cmm gap. The timing was set as per instructions, the sun shades work fine. How can I solve this issue?

Can you close it manually with the crank? Do you have the right glass panel drive cables? Can you supply a detailed video? Did you set the right to left equally (timing of mechanical arms).?

Timing, by pushing mechanic backwards until pin stops them. Not the forward, bc it can cause the mechanics to stop earlier. Push mechanic R & L forward into vent, then put the pins in and push mechanic backward until pin stop it. Remove pins.

Make sure all parts are ok and assembled correct. Timing: w/o glass motor, push glass mechanics all the way forward and into vent position (arms go up). Than insert screw driver into timing hole and push backwards, so that the screwdriver stops mechanic. Do Both sides. When pushing forward, don't stop too early, that can cause a mistiming. Push to end and keep pushing until arms are up (like glass in vent position). That might be the reason for the issue, you had. Than insert motor. Than frt glass, than preset glass, than initialyze, Than reset glass again in correct height. If you need to know height specs, let me know. Talk to you soon AS

Moin Moin, ,ich habe folgendes Problem. Ich weiss das die laufschiene kaputt ist, weshalb auch meine Große Scheibe aus der Führung springt. Aber mein linker MItnehmner( Bauteil mit der Sicherungsfeder/draht ) läßt sich auf der einen Seite von Hand bewegen und auf der anderen nicht. Das sind die verschlussmechanisms fuer das hintere dach. Gehoben wird es wenn dieser Mechanismus entriegelt wird (gleichzeitig R+L) und dann zieht ein kleine Kabel (35cm pro seite) ein Dreieck nach vorne, was sich dann unter die Glasshalterung Schiebt. Kontrolliere ob R = L zeitgleich ist. Sogenanntes Timing. Es kann eingestellt werden, siehe Video, wo ich roten Schraubenzieher durch das Loch der Vorderen dachmechanic schiebe. Du solltest jeden Schritt dieser anweisung genau befolgen, einem nach dem anderen und recht sowie links genau gleich. Wenn Du teile ohne defect besitzt, dann sollte es funktieonieren. Natuerlich koennte ich es besser beurteilen, wenn du mir live berichtest (via skype) oder detailiertes Video sendest. Skype name: "andreas.schulzi" Wenn das hintere nicht wieder zu faehrt, sitzt eventuell die hintere Glass halterung nur auf dem dreiecks teil. Es muss aber aufgeschoben werden,, nicht aufgelegt, so dass es heben und ziehen/senken kann. Das Dreieck ist leicht bruechig wenns heiss wird, bitte genau ansehen ob Fuehrung gegeben ist fuer die Dachhalterungen heben und senken. Es bricht meistens am vorderen ende. Unbeding hinsehen und wenn neu, auch mit richtigem Fett etwas einfetten (gibts im Autohandel und speziell fuer Sonnendaecher, wg hitze und kaelte). Zu einfaches Fett wird fluessig und versaut dir dann den Innenhimmel mit Fettfleck . BMW Haendler haben das Fett und du brauchst nur ca 100ml fuer die gesammte mechanic frisch zu fetten, wenn vorher gut gesauebert wurde. Mir faellt der name momentan nicht ein, aber es steht im BMW Computer, der bei jedem haendler steht. Lasse dir auch die anweisungen ausdrucken (auch von mir erstellt), die geben dir die info.

Der hintere schiebe himmel hat zwei alu schienen. Eine seite feststehend , eine beweglich, welche den groessenunterschied ausgleicht. Anders wirds probleme geben. Unbedingt wieder richtig zusammenbauen. Position feder muss stimmen. Drehmoment Schrauben ist 1.2-1.5 NM Funktion nicht so einfach in kurzen worten zu fassen. Beim oeffnen fahren beide Schiebehimmel (SH) nach hinten. Hintere sh wird beim erreichen des hinteren endes nach unten gefuehrt (weisse gleiter, vorde muessen eine nase haben, damit gefuehrt werden kann. Unbedingt drauf achten). Wenn der hintere nach unten gefuert wurde, faehrt der virdere darueber. Das wars aufgehen Nun zugehen: Vorderer sh faehrt nach vorne und mit zwei kleinen (3cm) mitnehmerhebeln, zieht hintere mit, wenn vorder ca die mitte erreicht hat. Zwei kleine mitnehmer sind (einer rechts, einer links) an der metallplatte des vorderen sh befestigt, bzw an der lochplatte-bei anderen fahrzeugen. Die Mnhebel laufen/gleiten in der alu schiene des unteren sh bis ans vordere ende des hinteren sh und dann werden sie durch zwei kleine plastc stuecke am weitergleiten gehindert, so dass sie dann den ganzen sh hinten heraufziehen und mit vorderem sh nach vorne laufen. Wichtig: Alle 4 gleiter des sh hinten muessen vorhanden sein. Vordere zwei muessen eine art nase haben, die die fuehrung gewaehrleiset. Fuehrungsschiene muss alle 4 schwarzen und geflockten plastc einsaetze haben, wo der untere sh einfallen kann und der vordere darüber fahren kann. Ufffff Schau mal nach und wenn du etwas gebrochenes siehst, oder etwas was rechts nicht so wie links ist, sage mir Bescheid und sende gute Detail Fotos als anhang Ich kann dir auch mehr info senden,wenn du mir email sendest Gruss aus USA Andreas

Gueney Akyol Wenn es mit der hand zu verschieben geht, ist diese seite nicht fixiert am vorderen ende. Evtl rasted finger nicht in die aussparung ein. Wenn finger und feder vorhanden sind und alles so aussieht wie die gute seite, dann evtl abstimmung von links und rechts neu einstellen (timing muss genau gleich sein). Wenn das nicht hilft, dann diese Aussparung etwas nach hintern vergrößern, bzw anschraegen (fase anbringen zum besseren einrasten). Schaber bzw kleine feile und erst mal alle grade entfernen die bei Herstellung vergessen wurden. Der Dosenoffner eines schweizer messers geht super zum leichten anfasen der Aussparung. Aber nur max 1/2 mm x 45 grad. .

Richard Emerson , sorry to hear that. I don’t have a shop, I was a trainer of every BMW Dealer Ship of the US in how to repair the roof, instead replacing it. If the insurance covers the damages, go for a replacement. If not, the BMW dealer might be able to repair it. Because you can repair everything, if the frame is not bend. And the dealer can also order a new frame including mechanical items, but without glass. This makes it a lot less pricey. If you are not covered, i might can guide you through the self repair. Than let me know what is wrong with it. If you live close by my house, we might can meet and I can help. But you may need few repair parts. Which state and city is close to you, if you don’t mind to answer..?

Andreas, I forgot to mention that after initializing the system, the close position (the timing hole in the retraction arm) goes further than it was set according to the video like 1 cm +/-.

Try following: Leave Roof in car. Remove motor Glass and Front Glass Retime both glass mechanics and check, if there are not bent down on the ends (happening before) Put motor back in, put glass back in Reinitialize.

As longer i think about, as more questions i have. Are the tracks clean and can the glass mechanic be manually pushed forward to the end and than go up into vent? Can you do all glass panels move with hand crank correctly? Timing right to left mechanic is ok? (Equal?)

I just bought a kit that supposedly compatible with the x5 and I'm sure not all parts are here.there a 2pc slider rail for e46, all 3 until m3 and sunroof arms..I got all the pieces out..there was a ton of broken plastic that I've no clue...this was pretty useful for my 2007 x3 3.0 si but maybe not every little piece...I'm starting to hate bmw more ..why would toyota associate with them is beyond me..

This could have been a great video but the video starts already into the job and I can't even tell what you are doing or trying to repair...everything just looks like black parts all blended together and out of focus!
