Jade, you had me at 'push my own comfort zone'. A very negative concept that many fall into is 'zone = brick wall'. You hit the nail on the head. If you want it to be an elastic boundary, it can be! The simple sum up. You're an emotional genius mate!

This is one of my favourite English learning channel. I like the way you speak and the excercises you give us. I give private lessons myself and I study dramatic art too, so a huge part of what you teach it's very useful to me, they are related knowledges, I guess. Greetings from Argentina.

I don't know if you speak like that on purpose, Jade, but you are one on the few English native speakers that I can understand 100% of what you're saying. I mean in every video you've done so far, not only those meant to teach people. That is great!

Well done Jade for stepping out of your comfort zone. One observation I noticed was a boundary one. At the start of the video you stayed at the top of the class keeping a distance of sorts. As the talk went on and you got more comfortable you often venture a little way up the aisle between the seats almost reassured that you had a friendly audience.

Hi Jade, One of the old admirer 4 years ago!! I certainly agree with you on public speaking is different. I suggest that speech exercises you need to detach yourself by using alternative screen (Technology) and click away any material you already have on KZbin! I admit that I never published any video because I hate my voice! I used KZbin to listen to lectures back in 2008 so it is almost 10 years and the tools available today is just beyond my imagination! Good luck. Remy

That's a long time to improvise a speech Jade, well done. I've seen that video on American pronunciation. Funny how some people took it so personal. Things are pronounced differently even within America there are completely different pronunciations and accents. Next time you do a video about pronunciation include the word aluminium aka aluminum.

What is good about speaking in public is when you already know beforehand what to say. I was asked once to teach before a few people and because I wasn`t so familiar about what I should teach I felt like I would die. What an awful experience!

This was a bit long so i ended up listening to it like a podcast. I was glad I did, I enjoyed the talk--! I'm always interested to hear how fellow introverts approach public speaking Very brave BTW! Oh, and If you want to do animations maybe you should collaborate with an animator and just draw the key-frames. If you find somebody who can use your drawing style they can fill in the between-frames and it spreads out the workload

I speak fast, which makes my words unclear and people often ask me to repeat myself. I speak fast because I am short of breath or forget to breathe and I want it over. I believe it is anxiety. I am looking for ways to overcome this fear. I am starting to view myself and all those around me as finite with a minuscule amount of time in existences. Every mistake, opinion, failure, success, achievement, life-led will be forgotten. for when we die, so does everything else. So why should I have fear? I try my best and sometimes I fail. I don't know if this mindset is healthy but it is helpful when I struggle.

I literally do the same thing. Before the words come out of my mouth, they're always checked in my head.. Sometimes I even try to visualise the words in my head, check them, replace some of them, reorder some of them, until they form a perfect sentence, and read them out :D It's just a speaking habit, nothing wrong right?

According to the Dunning-Kruger effect, intelligence and confidence are inversely proportional. Greater self awareness brings internal concerns about performance and a need for perfection, whilst the saying goes, ignorance is bliss. I'm not sure if this is entirely true, but I have met clever but diffident people, and plenty more that seem to ooze (unfounded) confidence. Confident people do tend to hold the attention of others. What's the other saying... It's not what you say but how you say it? Tone of voice... that sort of thing. Sorry I realise you must know this stuff. Politicians need confidence to put themselves forward, yet many of them seem idiotic. There are clever ones amongst them... Thatcher had a degree in Chemistry from Oxford I think... She had vocal training lessons to deepen (masculate) her voice to give her the air of more authority and confidence. Anyway it's my belief that if you are someone who tends to intellectualise things, it can be harder to make a start on anything. You keep noticing potential difficulties that lie ahead. I think this is similar to your initial attempts at making perfect videos from start to end. It is good to have standards but they can't be so high as to impede progress. As you pointed out, you sometimes just need to accept you can't be perfect, but that you will improve through the experience. It is by making mistakes that we can grow and improve, as you clearly have. Anyway, I think you sounded very natural (and so also likeable) when talking in front of this group. I like that you don't rush through what you have to say. I'm not keen on these quick cut videos. I can feel my breathing increase as I tend to synchronise cadence with the speaker... and whilst they maintain an artificially high rate (through editing), I cannot do the same in real life. They just make me feel uncomfortable. I tend to have less trust for fast talkers too, as I feel they don't want me to have time to digest what is being said.

Hello Jade, I think I ve heard you saying ''Im not used to doing this'' the phrase USED TO DOING. isnt TO a preposition, and what comes after it should not include an ''ING''! I thought saying that way is an Ameican thing only. or is the phrase USED TO is dealt with as a whole, or has a special case!?. forgive me, for Im a self taught when it comes to English. like your video, regards.
@TheSerj007
@TheSerj007 7 жыл бұрын
it's the gerund. To be used TO doING smth. After a preposition usually goes gerund which is verb+ing. In situations like: I'm tired of workING, I'm interested in studyING, I'm looking forward to meetING you, I'm used to speakING English. And you must be speaking about "to" as a particle in infinitives like: I like to sing, I want to go, I need to eat something. Look up "infinitive vs gerund" on the internet.

@RobBCactive

Both are right depending on if use is used as a verb or adjective in past participle.. I used to be at Uni. I use computers. I'm used to real ale. I'm used to sleeping more. (sleeping is a gerund). The minimal grammar makes it confusing, verbs transform into adjectives and nouns.
