So much respect for your determination and hard work. I think you'll really enjoy Medicine and your experience will definitely give you a lot of confidence when you start clinical attachments and are working with patients. More than happy to have a chat if you want to discuss anything about medical school/careers at that stage (medic here as well!). Really enjoy watching your videos as well. I feel both motivated and more cheerful after I've watched one of your videos - looking forward to more of your uploads!

I’d say the PGCE is challenging but if you can get through it then I feel like you’ll cope with teacher life! I think the first year salary after qualifying is around £26k (?) but it is always changing and I think teachers can earn over £40k after taking on extra responsibilities and training but I think it might be worth googling it for more accurate info xx

On your placement when you were teaching your own classes, were you observed in every single lesson or just a few of these lessons you taught on placement. Thanks in advance!
@LydiaMartinMedic2 жыл бұрын
Every lesson was observed in that there was always a qualified teacher in the room... but they wouldn't always be fully focussed on me (they'd be doing marking/planning their own lessons etc) But we had 'formal observations' every few weeks with my mentor and those ones would be more official with written feedback that could be used as evidence in my teaching portfolio. I also had a visit from my uni tutor once a term who would do a formal observation and also one formal observation from the deputy head/senior staff member of the school a term :). You do get really used to someone watching you teach and after a few lessons it didn't really phase me/ you forget they're there. Hope that helps!

Can you suggest how to choose university where to apply for the PGCE course
@LydiaMartinMedic Жыл бұрын
I think the actual university you choose for the PGCE is less important than for a normal degree. I chose Southampton because I was already a graduate from the uni and my partner was living there - the education school also happened to have a good reputation. My sister is training to teach this year and she's chosen the local training scheme (SCITT) which is the same qualification but they spend more time in schools rather than having a day per week at university like it did. I think just do you research but don't over think it because you wont be spending loads of time at the university anyway.

Do you get paid a wage during your pgce?
@LydiaMartinMedic3 жыл бұрын
So we didn't get a "wage" but we got a bursary as an incentive to train to teach. I got £26,000 as a biologist and so did all the physics and chemistry teachers, i know maths got £28k that year but some subjects get less.. it depends on the demand for teachers in that subject the year you train... i know the bursary for biology is lower this year (maybe like £8000?) but it could easily go back up next year. The bursary was paid over 10 months in equal installments and it was also tax free :) The latest bursary amounts are on this website: getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/funding-your-training

What time did you start and finish the day (officially). Were you expected to stay beyond the last lesson of the day - parents evenings, after school clubs? I’m going to have to juggle a 4-year-old too.
@LydiaMartinMedic Жыл бұрын
So from what I remember, i arrived at 8:30 (unless we had staff meetings) and I left at around 3:30-4pm most days as I preferred to plan lessons at home (I didn’t have my own classroom to sit in anyway) so most days I would leave pretty much straight after the last lesson. If we had parents evening I was expected to stay but that was maybe once or twice a term! The schools I was at did lunchtime clubs instead of after school. Hope that helps :)

@@LydiaMartinMedic Thank you for that. It sounds reasonable. Finally: Was there an expectation that you got involved with lunchtime clubs - or was that optional?
