As someone with thousands of hours in VR(C) and as a developer myself, this project sounds absolutely amazing! The idea that worlds, avatars and infrastructure can interact as a monolith of a system is something that I would adopt. I think it's about time someone revolutionizes the way VR environments. Making it truly open source and self-hostable means that we don't need to bend to corpos or the policies of standard platforms. This would be huge!

I think resonite is very close to your vision and it's getting closer. It is possible to curate your world to a extent by whitlisting only certain avatars, disabling spawning items, colling avatars and manage your privileges automaticly. You can effectively control any entity in your world with a script complex enough. I really want the platform to grow and not scare away the normies.

Even if something happens to the company, brane won't disappear completely this way, assuming it actually manages to develop to that point, and you can potentially benefit of the leftover processing power of computers worldwide. Sounds like a great initiative! Years ago I used to play on ROBLOX, there were places set up called script builders that let players execute code by using the chat feature. This was a great experience because you could just hang out and work on your own stuff and see what other people were doing real-time. The engine sandbox was pretty good, but you could also do stuff like insert 100k message instances inside a player's local GUI to lag out their computer, so the sandbox wasn't infallible. The collaborative programming experience is definitely something to strive for, I haven't seen it done like those script builders yet

Something that's probably important to keep in mind is how you're gonna abstract interface skeumorphisms. Not everyone will want a portal into a train and waste time physically navigating to the exit of a program all the time; people might want to multi-task and keep a word in a wrist-watch similar to Google Earth VR's StreetView globe, or have "phones" that can stretch and get inside, or turn around have the new space seamless blended where where weren't seeing etc; a winding walkable path where the destination will found behind a turn when ready, worlds organized in rooms in the person's own custom mansion etc; communication systems may be wearables, ghosts, portals, wormholes, messenger robots etc; and n general, apps don't need to be whole worlds, you could have autonomous objects, volumes, screens, wearables of all sorts and so on; and certain things must not be fully enforced by the world, what if people need an alarm clock, need to check their pets or kids in the real world while middle of an activity, need to answer a job call etc; certain appearance changes might need to be one-way to account for certain mental health particularities. And that's even before we start considering people might all be wearing a headset with plenty of walking space int he real world; some might be sitting, some might be acessing via a hand-held device, some might have some sort of mocap and real-world screen with head tracking to provide immersion or even a stereo or even full-on light-field screen, maybe some day some stuff like KeckCAVES might be a little more common, perhaps some stuff derived from Jeri Ellsworth style of tech. And so on.
@gadg3tguy054 күн бұрын
Just joined the discord, and am VERY excited to see where this goes. I think 'dress-code' style avatar enforcement is a really, REALLY good idea, but I do somewhat worry that, because of that, a lot of worlds would end up disabling custom avatars altogether to avoid any risk of bad actors, similar to how most players in VRChat have a lot of the custom avatar stuff turned off for newer users and the like. (I understand why, but as someone with a short friends list, kinda sucks that I can't really show off the avatar I've put a decent bit of work into.) As for the train system, I think that having that continuity of experience will do wonders for immersion, and the fact that it physicalizes the act of going to a different world (I think VR UI and UX could stand to make less things into flat menus and buttons) is such a cool thing. Overall, this has given me a lot to think about, and I can't wait to see where this goes. I hope progress will be steady and that the foundations will be well-built.

vrchats main issue is its user created content... were most avatars are verypoor rated or above... i genuinly feel like there is no need to ever have avatars that unoptimised ever... medium rated should be the gold standard with poor rated avatars being something if you wanna show off something cool.... Especialy with if you will be able to whip out objects from servers... then you dont need those on your avatar aswell...

@chloe-sunshine7Күн бұрын
@@newtz.If I’m not mistaken, I think a large portion of the cause of that is the lack of user freedom. People want an avatar where they can switch between different outfits, change eyes and hair, and have various little fun tools to play with. And the way they do this is having all of these things loaded at all times but turned invisible. If we had more modular avatars like the person in the video described, I imagine we could have only what’s necessary at the time rendered making the avatar much lighter. Although, I only have a very basic understanding of avatars, so maybe I’m overlooking some things. Please let me know if I’m wrong. Edit: after rereading your comment, I think you addressed this and I just misunderstood. My bad 😅

Skeptical, but my attention is entirely garnered and I'm eager to see how it pans out. Though I do have one otherwise notable concern from when you mentioned how you'd like to have an in-game editor. It would indeed be very cool to have an incredibly capable and great to use editor in-game, that much I can agree with but I can only support that so long as there's a capable "2d" editor. >VR is already strain enough on my system, so I like to get done what i can outside of it; which granted is partially a problem on my side-its also not something I ever see truly going away (ie. as hardware gets better and more available, software inevitably tends to capitalize on it overall making performance gains less impactful-if there remain any at all). >While it depends on the actual application of your editor, I imagine it would still be fairly inconvenient to use for certain aspects of creation that are needed in the overall project (whether it be modeling, rigging/weighting, audio design, drawing textures, etc) which would necessitate using other programs in conjunction, often times having many open at once that will be switched between very commonly (ex: i almost always have blender, unity, audacity, krita, and a few other misc programs open for one project) and using 2d programs in a VR theater while possible, is far too inconvenient for it to be worth it imo >While this would also depend on the future of VR hardware, I dont see it changing significantly enough in the near future to make it truly more convenient than 2d. No matter how good the editor, it would be significantly more annoying to have to go through the process of booting up vr, the game, and the ingame editor and then working in that vr stage for the next dozen hours every time you want to do anything to your content. Granted you did say that it would be open source so even if you entirely disregarded a 2d editor, there wouldnt inherently be anything outright preventing a valid replacement being made in its stead

I’m definitely focusing on the 2D editor first. As you bring up it’s a lot more convenient in a lot of instances

Beware the curse of Project Xanadu. Ted Nelson designed the perfect hypertext system decades before the web shipped. He never shipped, because perfect was the enemy of good enough. He had identity, monetization, and a link could never be a broken link as all links were "two ways". WWW finally shipped with text plus one way hyper links and took the world by storm. Just your goal of a multi-threaded scripting language is a massive undertaking to crack the problem that most scripting languages have settled on a global lock and specific threading packages to opt into multi-threading. User's won't know or care about this as much as the UX you describe. Good luck! Awesome video!
@WireWhiz3 күн бұрын
That's the main worry, thought at the end of the day if I end up pushing whatever becomes popular to be better then I will have succeeded in a way. Definitely not writing enough specs at the moment for it to be "perfect" though, goal is to have this out relatively fast.
@jatoxo5 күн бұрын
I really like your vision for this project. I'm especially interested in the architecture that will be supporting it I think one of the bigger problems to think about is how to handle failure to retrieve assets. In VR Chat, when you download a world succesfully you gain the guarantee that the entire world is now stable and available to you. But if the environment is broken down into smaller dynamically fetched components, you can't guarantee they will all be available, but you CAN get into a state where you need them to be. This might be simple when all that is missing is a piece of world geometry, but if something like a script fails to load, what even is the correct way to handle this? Second, browsing the web is inherently something you do on your own, you're just loading the content from a web server. There's no concept of sharing a loaded website with someone else, like you would be sharing a VR world with your friends. In VR Chat you have this concept of instances, but what decides what an "instance" is, in the case of Brane?
@WireWhiz5 күн бұрын
That's what those "runtime servers" are for, the idea I'm working with right now is that there's a runtime server associated with each chunk, with one server handling as many chunks as possible, but with the ability to "hand" chunks off to other servers if needed. I'm a big fan of "one persistent instance", so that's what I'm gunning for, but for extremely high player count scenarios and intentional splitting up of players I'm not quite sure how I want to handle that yet, since "world" boundaries are a bit fuzzy. Maybe something like a world creator sets collections of chunks that can be instanced, and then there's UI or an API to select which one of those instanced regions you want to enter.
@WireWhiz5 күн бұрын
To the question of failing to load, errors are likely going to be handled on the chunk level, I'm planning to have an emergency boundary system that prevents players from entering a chunk that's not sufficiently loaded in worst case scenarios. Hopefully I'm able to figure out a way to let world creators define what happens in these scenarios as well for specific situations. So in short people would just get locked out dangerously unloaded parts of the world with invisible walls.

What VR needs is a more standard operating system. An operating system that at its core ensures that no matter what setup you use, you can have a normal experience. That would make it possible to have different parts of your setup by different companies.(A headset by group A, with controllers by B and....) This would make it more accessible, less wealthy people can buy some cheaper equipment while rich people can buy high quality ones. This also gives companies the chance to invest without being scared by big players like meta. Giving more varied kinds of equipment And lastly software makers won't have to worry about what equipment you use. Making the complexity for them a lot smaller. In other words, someone needs to make something like Linux for VR.

I’ve spent the last 2 years in the VR b2b space, no crushing is happening. Also I would be very happy if meta takes my future stuff, their software would be slightly less of an embarrassment then.

This is literally Roblox studio. I know you mentioned that earlier, but I highly highly recommend looking into it more. It'll massively help with potential architecture and stuff

I honestly love your vision. I am a little worried about your huge scope and lack of real funding tho. Especially without a team of people working under you. With the rate vr is moving at it's not feasible to do it yourself and I would really recommend attempting to expand into a team of people or else your project may get left behind. What your looking at making will take decades for a single person and by that time there may already be a competitor in your market gap. I really recommend reaching out and hiring some people if you manage to get a bit from crowd funding. If you need any help feel free to contact me my dm's are open and I can share my (albeit limited) experience in a business management roll Goodluck!!

That’s the plan, if I get enough funding I’m definitely forming a team

Honestly really looking forward to see where this goes. A "metaverse" with a solid base planned like this will go far if you pay your cards tight
