Glad we made it to Sun n fun. The show was great and I was happy to meet so many people and check out some new airplanes. Unfortunately though at the end of the show, the weather became significantly bad. We had a stationery front come in and just tossed out storms for a few days.
Being a VFR pilot I had to stay my butt down for an additional 3 days waiting for the storm to pass.
At last it did pass and I was happy to hop back in the air for the 424 mile journey back to Atlanta.
This was certainly a learning experience. True ADMs came across on this flight, and I was happy to touch down safely. The Sling TSi did it's thing too.

*I don't fault the use of the word here at all because it's precisely the right meaning of the word.* Detain is not all that negative of a term in general. For instance, a detention basin detains water partially, whereas a retention basin retains it fully. Ever been to detention when you were a kid? Even in terms of law enforcement activity, it's the least significant form of apprehension. If you hear "detention" and think arrested, confiscated, or something more serious, you should become more familiar with the true meaning of detainment, even in terms of law enforcement. Holding someone's arm is detainment. Keeping someone from self-inflicting injuries is detainment.

Well done in that tough situation. Last time I flew in windy conditions with a strong crosswind the same thing happened to me. I was flying with a friend who's a retired airline captain with 30,000 hours. His tip for me was to start out on the side of the runway that's upwind and as you settle and land, you're now in the middle. He used to do that with the Boeing AC all the time. All these years no one mentioned that tip to me for what to do when the crosswind is strong.

Mike, I noticed you have a lot of trouble with atc not understanding you. I'm a licensed Ham radio operator with lots of radio training since the 1980's, check and see if your radio has a mic gain control. If so turn it down and see if that helps with atc understanding your traffic. If not i suggest you move mic away from your mouth. Your radio is being over driven thats why they can't understand you. Some of your audio is distorted on the videos too. Give it a try and see if it helps.

You’re only mistake was shallowing out the bank in the flare. You were tracking center line just fine until flare. When you have that much wind, you will land with a lot more bank attitude than you’re currently comfortable with. As the wing loses lift it will settle on the runway gradually. The yoke should not be relaxed. Just practice with an instructor on some 30kt days. You’ll get used to it. If the gear is aligned with center and the bank is enough to put the wing tip in the dirt to maintain center, then you have more wind than the aircraft can handle.

Nice job Mike, I got out of Lakeland (Tampa Exec) on that Sunday, woke up, looked really bad, got breakfast, saw a big break form up and did it. I flew to Winston/Salem. For an overnight, then back to Massachusetts. I'm instrument rated though, makes flights like this much easier, I wouldn't have gotten through that front VFR on Sunday, although it looked like others were doing it. Great job, your head didn't hit the headliner, so it was a good day!

many expert pilots even test pilots make the mistake of turning with their hands instead of their feet to "kick out" the crab due to crosswind. a trick to remember to use your feet is to think "STEP (or Stamp) ON The Runway" just like u "Step On The Ball" to coordinate your turn. so if the wind is from the right the runway is on your left, muscle memory kicks in and before u know it u r turning left with your hands, that is ailerons. instead if u think Step on the Runway then u will naturally use your left rudder to kick out the crab.

We have all been there. You have to fight for the center line. I feel like you just let the wind push you across the runway and you kind of just let go. Get those rudders working for you by getting those inputs in for the center. A slightly narrower runway and you would have been in the grass.
@clyderokke5409
@clyderokke5409 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting landing. My first CFI always had me practice these landings on the inactive runway since we always had wind in MT. One other thing, My last CFI was a USAF bomber pilot and suggested what someone earlier had, land with you downwind gear on the centerline. The reason is because the runway is slightly convex for drainage so when you land this way, the up wind wing is lower by a few degrees so you are less likely to get blown around.

It was really easy IFR weather, and I likely could have done VFR on top in Canada. Really wish we could get something like that here.
